Wondering If It Is a Good Time to Switch Jobs?

I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old at home. I work retail right now, though since hours have been cut I haven't worked in over a month. I feel really stir crazy. I have looked at opportunities to do a class at Apollo College as a Veterinary Assistant. I have a love for animals and people and I think this job would really suit me. The only thing is the class costs about 11k to complete (which I definately don't have). Some vets I have spoken to locally say you aren't required to take a class for that and that they will pay you about $9 an hour and give you on the job training. I make $11.22 an hour at my current job of 5 years. I'd ideally like to work part time 2-3 days a week. Just to have a social life and share my love for animals. I'm not really in it for the money. I also think my husband would have a chance to help out a little more around the house and with the kids. With mommy being gone, maybe things might run a little smoother. Should I go through with the vet assistant position or stick it out in my retail job?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I've decided to wait a little while to switch jobs. I just enrolled Kaylee in tap dance, and gymnastics, and I am taking Andy ice skating so he can play hockey. I am trying to get more involved with the kids so they aren't bored to death being at home. It is a good excuse to sneak out and get a latte anyway!! :) My heart is still with animals, and I will be considering it a little down the road. For now, I am just enjoying the kids. :) Thanks for all of your help and friendly advice, it is appreciated!!

working for 9 an hour is better then not working for $11.22 in my book... and doing something you love is better then anything else. Besides you can test the feild that way befor you invest any of your money into schooling for it...

HI K.,
I think if that is what you want go for it! If you have the finances and support from your husband, I work from home maybe it would be some thing you could do part time while you go through schooling.
I just wanted to introduce myself real quick. My name is C. and I'm a mom of two kids. I've been a medical assistant for 9 years and decided it was time to start taking care of my own children. My oldest is almost 11 now. Anyway, I started my search to look for something to do from home. I was very skeptical, especially since I have family and friends in the legal field telling me horror stories on home based businesses. I wanted something legitimate. Well, much to my surprise I found something and just in time. I am still able to do my career full time and my home based business also.

I just wanted to share my web site with you. If you are happy at your job, that's awesome. But this can maybe help out and give you some supplemental income. Maybe you are a stay-at-home mom or wife and this is just what you're looking for. Well, I have done this for a three month's now around my children's busy schedules, and home schooling and it has been a true blessing for us.

If money isn't an issue (meaning you not needing to work to pay the bills) and you think being a vet asst. would make you happy, then you should pursue it. No reason to stay in a job you dislike if you don't have to.

Go for it. Switch jobs. It sounds like you are able to take the risk, financially. And having Mom happy makes life better for everyone in the family.

I absolutely HATED my job making $15 an hour, and finally made the decision to quit when my son was 11 months old. We've struggled a little financially...but it's the best decision I ever made. I felt I wasn't being a good mom having to go to a job I hated every day, and come home to him...I just couldn't do it. I now work from home, only making $10 an hour...and I don't regret it at all. While I don't necessarily LOVE my job right now...it allows me to stay home with my son, and that was what mattered most. If getting into being a vet tech is what you want, then go for it! You'll feel much better if you can do something you love. Also, once you're more experienced, I'm sure your salary would increase some, too. Good luck!
