L.P.
Have a touch screen installed. LOL
Sorry, not much help but from what I've been told, if you have a touch screen, it's great but otherwise, it's confusing. Honestly, you'll get used to it, it's part of the wonders of the human brain.
So our old laptop of 10 years died and actually fried, LOL. We bought a new computer at Best Buy and it has Windows 8. I HATE it with a passion and just can not get use to it. So can you all help me try to get use to it? Are there any little tips anyone can offer?

I'm sorry you hate it. I got the free trial version of it back in June of last year. It was exactly like the current version, and then I had to upgrade to the official Windows 8 a few months ago.
Anyway, I love it! I don't have a touch screen. It took me a week or so to get used to it last summer, but I think it organizes things much better, and it's more visually appealing. Like all new things, it takes a bit of getting used to. I hope you learn to like it. It's awful being stuck with something you're not happy with.
That's what I've heard too. A touch screen makes all the difference. Good luck!
I know EXACTLY what you're saying. Just got a new laptop with windows 8 at christmas and I felt like such a dinosaur trying to learn the new system. I still do all sorts of frustrating things as I try to navigate the internet. You might do better with a wireless mouse instead of using the touch pad. I find I hit the touch pad constantly as I type and it does all sorts of annoying things!
My boss had the same problem. You can download apps to make it work like Windows 7, one is http://www.classicshell.net/
He actually bought a disc at Office Depot that installed the task bar & start button, for around $5.
Some of the settings can be changed in the registry. Things such as making the password requirement optional & changing the look of the font on the icons. I googled these things and found answers.
I know this doesn't help you now, but for future purchases, companies that build computers can purchase the previous license (such as Windows 7 when Windows 8 came out) for 3 +/- years after the release of the new operating system.
I played with one at Officemax and did not like it either. A computer tech once told me rule of thumb with Windows is every other operating system is good...ie: Windows XP, good; Windows Vista, not; Windows 7 good, good; Windows 8, not... Good luck!!
It's not my fave but I have found that everytime I get stuck or lost with something I just click (windows button + D) which takes you to the desk top.
I hated it and wanted to throw mine new computer out the window.
I am computer illeterate and hated not being able to find anything.
I will say I started thinking about my computer as an odd looking smart phone. Once I did that and stopped trying to use it like a touch screen I figured out how to do a lot more with it.
I also took the free class they had at Staples. He wasn't great but he did answer some questions for me.
I have gotten used to it. I did take off all those apps on the start page and I made a square for my wall and for Google Chrome. So if I can get to the start page I can go to chrome or where I think of as my home page...my wall.
It will get easier, once you figure out staying away from the corner and the edges it gets easier too.
Play with it. I run most things from the desktop and it is pretty much like windows 7. Thing is though I have gone up the window steps so I am going from windows 7 to 8 and there is little difference beyond the start menu.
If you want the normal start window, well closer to normal as in with all the apps and not select apps you swipe from the bottom in the start menu, then there is a button on the right side you click. From there you can do anything you did before.
Do you have a touch screen? It is a lot easier with a touch screen but I still do a lot with the touch pad as well. Small buttons don't do well with fingers so for precision I either use the touch pad or, oh what do you call that stupid pen? It is the same pen I use for my phone....
No advice as I'm still on XP and fighting the upgrade we're doing to 7 at work every step of the way. Not really, I know it must be done but I have to test some applications before we migrate and I have put that off as long as possible because I hate everything about 7. Can't imagine how annoying 8 will be but knowing my company we'll be doing that in 10 years. I feel for you!
