Wii Fit plus Exercises for Pregnant Mama

I would love to workout a few days a week on the Wii Fit Plus like I used to before I was pregnant (2nd pregnancy) but I am not sure what exercises will be okay for me to do. Does anyone (pregnant or not) have any suggestions as to which exercises on the Wii Fit Plus would be good and safe to do while pregnant? Or if anyone has any easy day-to-day exercises they can suggest ... that would be great too! I have a 20-month old son and I also watch a 17-month old little boy so I do a lot of running around the house during the day but would love a few more exercises to do during naptime or after my son goes to bed. Thanks :)

ADDED: Thanks so much so far for all the great advice and suggestions. I will definitely talk to my doctor more about it at our next appt. Until then, I will probably just do the few exercises that I feel are safe and fairly simple to do while pregnant. But please keep any more tips/suggestions coming my way. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I took a regular yoga class when I was pregnant. I did everything everybody else was doing, except toward the end (later in my pregnancy) I didn't lay flat on my back or do anything upside down!

I have the Wii Fit Plus, but I haven't played in a while, so I don't remember specifics! The step aerobics would be good.

I would definitely run that by your doctor first. Unless I am mistaken, pretty much ALL of the Wii fit Plus games require standing on the balance board. Depending on how far along in your pregnancy you are, your center of balance will be shifting and you might be less balanced than before. It is only a small heighth, I know, but if you lose your balance and tip off the side, you could twist an ankle or something too.
Have fun, stay fit, but be safe doing it.
Congrats on baby #2!

check out www.crossfit.com They have a lot of resources and even a page for pregnant women. I currently do crossfit and absolutely love it. They post WODs (workout of the day) each day and most of them you can do at home if you have some of the essential items. Good luck.

I am a prenatal/postnatal personal trainer and fitness instructor. I do group classes out of Oswego and Orland Park park districts that are geared toward both pregnant and postnatal moms.

The class is called Mommy Tummy - and the exercises are geared toward condition the correct muscles for pushing (recti and transverse abdominus) as well as making sure your muscles don't split (or split further) during pregnancy (diastasis recti). These are encorporated with yoga, pilates, arms and leg conditioning.

My pregnant ladies who have taken the class have had GREAT deliveries because they are so well conditioned (especially for pushing). I am 4 1/2 mo. pregnant with #4 in fact, and I will teach all the way through the pregnancy.

Let me know if you have any questions :)

In general the workouts you were already doing before you became pregnant are safe to do while pregnant. Obviously anything that is high impact or has fall risks is out. I used the Wii Fit when pregnant, mostly the yoga and everything was smooth sailing for me. Trust your body to let you know when you're pushing yourself too far.

I bought two prenatal DVDs. As Carolyn pointed out not all are created equal. One failed to properly show the pose/movement and made me motion sick(unrelated to pregnancy - I have the issue regardless). The other I enjoyed. I would recommend going to an actual class though as you want to ensure you are doing poses correctly. I did that as well as the video. For me the end result was an amazing first time labor experience. My doctor couldn't believe how easy my delivery was especially with a sunny side up baby. I credit the yoga for allowing my hips the flexibility that was needed to only push for half an hour under the circumstances and for my small frame. HTH - congratulations and best wishes.

Look for classes for prenatal women and then you'll understand what is/is not appropriate. In general, anything lying on your stomach, lying on your back, or twisting/compressing your abdominal area, and inversions are inappropriate. I agree you should consult with your doctor about your exercise. There are prenatal yoga DVD but some of the poses have made my prenatal yoga students nauseous and we've talked about substitute poses so they can enjoy prenatal yoga at home. A friend of mine offers public prenatal yoga class Tuesdays at 7pm at Universal Spirit Yoga in Naperville. I teach prenatal yoga Saturdays and Sundays and always give a list of poses that students can use at home. You are welcome to post me directly with more questions. BTW I offer balance poses at the wall. I have a Wii fit at my house and agree that doing the balance poses in the middle of the room could be a problem. Upward arm stretch and warrior I (with only one foot on the board) are good poses except that the Wii system only explains part of the concept of knee alignment.
Bradley Birth emphasizes being seated in bound angle pose - soles of the feet together and knees wide to open the pelvic area. I have not seen this offered on the Wii system.

You need to ask your OB/GYN what exercises are okay for you to do.... since only your Doc will know your pregnancy condition...
