Wide Baby Shoes W/ Arch Nowhere to Be Found!!! Please Help!

Hi,

My son has been in physical therapy for slight torticullos (among other things). One of the 'quirks' he has is the tendency to point his toes, walk on his toes, etc. His PT suggested Sure Fit shoes, in a wide size, with arches. I looked, but the Sure Fits don't have arches in his size (3W). We've been to Stride Rite and had to return a pair of shoes (no arch). Then the PT tells us to check out Foleys, Macys, or Dillards for Nike's or Reeboks that lace up. Foleys IS now Macy's and they no longer sell baby shoes. Dillards hasn't any Nikes any in a wide sizes. I am at the end of my rope (with the shoe search AND the physical therapist).

Does anyone know of a brand of baby shoe in which I could find a 3W lace up with an arch???
I appreciate any clues to end this crazy search. ;-)

Thanks!

~ Chel

So What Happened?

Thanks so much to everyone for your awesome advice! It was so helpful! We had decided to order shoes from Nordstrom and were very excited, but when they arrived they were too small! My son had recently had a growth spurt! So we had to return the shoes. But it all worked out in the end. Some people gave the advice to go to Academy and we did. Awesome find! We bought the Nike Pico Plus Wide shoe (which someone had suggested) and it was only $21.99! Thanks so much for the excellent advice! The search is finally over! ;-P

Thanks again all! ;-)

~ Chel

Hi Chel,

My sister just bought a pair of shoes for her son with wide feet at the Stride Rite outlet in the Allen outlets. They had a big selection of wide- size 3-4 with good arch supprt. She bought a pair called " X-tech". I hope this helps.

Academy and Famous Footwear both carry New Balance brand. They come in wide widths, lace up and have arches. Academy is usually a few dollars cheaper, but Famous Footwear has a better selection. Southlake also has a New Balance store, on 1709 not far down from 114.

I'm not sure how the arch support would help his condition unless he is already walking, but I would suggest you might contact a podiatrist, or a chiropractor even who can have inserts for his shoes made to fit. I had our chiropractor have some made for my 13 year old son who was having a lot of ankle pain for some reason and since wearing them in his regular tennis shoes(vans which run wide), they have helped tremendously. Good luck.

Go to the Stride Rite in Preston Center (NW HWY/Preston). They carry a ton of different kinds of shoes and Nike's in wide. My son had extra wide feet for a while, even harder to find. I have had a little luck on line. Shoebuy carries a pretty good selection of wide shoes and they have free shipping and returns. Hope this helps.

Hi M.! I am an Occupational Therapist I do not knowing your whole story/history, but my first thought when reading your post was that maybe your PT could make/get inserts (Cascade DAFO inserts). They would go inside ANY pair of good supportive tennis shoes (Payless, Target, any supportive tennis shoes...lace up or velcro, etc)....giving you a lot more options AND giving your little guy the perfect match for his needs. Most pediatric PTs are familiar....and there is a company in Plano whom the PTs I have worked with have used and been pleased with. Good Luck!

My son has wide shoes and the only places I can find him shoes is either Stride Rite or Nordstrom's. You might try Nordstroms. They have a pretty wide variety to choose from.

Welcome to the world of expensive feet. :)

Try the Allen Outlets. They have an Adidas store. You may have to order these online.

Hi there, It's my understanding from the Nike people that the baby shoes they have don't come in wide sizes. I would suggest New Balance. When my son was younger NB and Stride Rite were the only 2 places I could find where he could try the wide sizes on. Good luck!

I found a lot of 3W shoes on Zappos. No idea about the arch, but they did have lace up Nikes:

I know online isn't the first choice, but Zappo's has a great return policy.

When I son was a baby our PT measured his foot and we had arches made not sure where she sent the measurements off to. But she also sent the bill to our insurance company with a letter explaining why he needed the arch support and insurance payed. We were receiving our PT services through SCCIP. Good luck

You can also try Payless. When my daughter was seen by a PT due to late walking, the PT told me to buy her the Payless brand children's shoe (sorry I can't remember what they call it - smartfit, something like that). Anyway, their shoes have arch support and though my daughter didn't need wide I know they sell them. And a benefit - heckuva lot cheaper than Stride Rite.

Definitely look at Nordstrom online. Their stores have a fairly limited inventory, but you can get a lot online. I have had much more sucess finding specific toddler shoes at Nordstroms than Macy's or Dillards. I took the liberty of getting online for you a minute ago and I think I saw a couple of options for what you are looking for. Try it. Good luck.

My son had problems with his feet turning out and needed shoes with arches. His therapist recommended shoes from Payless Shoe Source with arches and laces. They are called Smart Fit. Great shoes!! Been buying shoes there since.

Try them out!

I don't know for sure about the arches, but the Reebok outlet store (available in many outlet malls) has baby shoes (my daughter has worn as small as 4's in their shoes) and the ones she has now (black, lace up) are a size 8 (because she's 3). You might check their website to see if they have more stuff listed there than a store would carry.
Good luck!

I never had to look for shoes with arches but I did have to deal with a EEE to an EEEE foot on my son. You might want to check out http://www.jrayshoes.com/ or (800) 342-6321. I found them when I was visiting a friend in Mobile AL. They do mail-order. You could probably tell them the size of the Stride-rite shoe, the need for an arch and they might be able to help you.

Hope this helps.

Hi M.! My son is in PT also and we had a similiar problem trying to find shoes. We did get the extra wide lace up tennis shoes from Stride Ride, but then we ordered a slip in insert so he could have the arch. It was our PT who told us about the custom made inserts...its a company called Cascade DAFO. The website is www.dafo.com. The PT measured out my son's foot so they would have all of the exact measurements, indicated the foam strength, the arch, etc. The inserts cost us about $40-50 (and the shoes were about $30), so it does get a little pricey. Oh, we also went up half a shoe size so the shoe could hold the arch (and we also removed the cloth padding at the bottom of the shoe to make a little more room). Hope this helps...I know how frustrating shoe shopping can be...I went to Stride Rite three times in two days returning/exchanging/buying...ugh!
