My 12 month old is beginning to drink milk and the doctor said to use whole milk. Well I cannot always find that at the store and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions? Could I get Vitamin D milk instead?
Vitamin D milk is whole milk and it should be available practically anywhere. I would stick with whole milk until you see how much she likes milk. My son is a milk-aholic and we were able to switch to 2% around 18 months or so but my daughter doesn't like it as much and I think we didn't start coming down on fat content until 2 or so.

If it says 1/2 percent, 1 percent, 2 percent that's how much fat content is in the milk. If it says none of those things then it is WHOLE milk with ALL the fat content still in it. That's what whole milk means; I learned that as a girl growing up on the farm.

Vitamin D milk is fine; it is actually the same thing. I've noticed that the marketing gurus out there have come up with a more health conscious naming convention - for example, we drink skim milk but they've started labeling it as fat free. Shop on!

As far as I know, all gallon jugs with red caps are whole milk, even if they don't say it.
Personally, I disagree that they need whole milk in the average family. If the child is eating yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, milk, an occasional french fry, potatoes with a little butter, avacodo dips and other dressings, etc. etc... They are getting plenty of fat. My own children have always had an extremely varied diet and I buy products enriched with the omega oils and cook with extra flaxseed and healthy oils any time I can.
That said, I prefer whole milk for the taste and my mother prefers skim. So we compromise on 2% about half the time and the other half the time I'll get whole for the kids and skim for my mother.

I give our gr son's whole milk and sometimes 2% both are doing well.

All milk is "vitamin D" milk as they fortify or add vitamin D to the milk. The reason whole milk is recomended for children under two years of age is because of brain development. The brain is completely made out of fat and children of this age group need the extra fat to help their brains develop properly. I have never seen a store be out of whole milk.

I have always thought that whole milk was the same thing as the Vitamin D milk, I didn't know that there was a difference myself. Your doctor just doesn't want you giving your daughter 2%, 1% 1/2%, or skim milk because they don't have the nutrients needed. You would be just fine buying the Vitamin D milk, if you read the label, it is still whole milk, it just has D added.

Obviously everyone’s already told you that vitamin D milk is the same thing as whole milk. I just wanted to tell you that you aren’t alone in your confusion! When my son was turning one I scoured the internet and asked everyone I knew if they were the same, and couldn’t find a straight, confident answer anywhere. I think I might have finally had to call our pediatrician to ask. :)

In my opinion whole milk and vitamin d milk is the same. Now me personally just put my kids to what i drink which is 2% just to avoid having to buy two different kinds of milk.

After reading all the advice I just had to add this. I remember fighting with my brother over the milk for breakfast after the milk man came, yes a man who brought it in glass bottles. We fought over the thick cream on the milk that was not homogenized then. And now people worry about whole milk vs. 2%, 1% or skim for kids. Really am feeling old today.
By now you know that vitamin D is whole milk. I think babies need that unless your doctor tells you to use 2%.
Enjoy you little girl.

I believe vit D milk IS whole milk. We use organic 1% now bcuz my kids r older, but especially for our daughter bcuz there is some concern that the added hormones in regular milk lead to early development in girls. So we use organic . The 1% is just less fat. Have u noticed the breasts on a 2nd grader lately ? My god! I didn't have those til 6th grade! And what about the 12+ year olds. I believe its the hormones they pump into those cows! It would b something to think about.

hi C.,
have you considered goat milk? I've used it since my daughter was 12 months old as I weaned her from b-milk once i found out I was pregnant. After a good bit of research, I found it to be the best alternative/replacement of breast milk or formula. it's so much easier to digest especially important for little tummies. They are not treated with bovine growth hormones or antibiotics; such is the case with most cow milk. And it id fortified with Vit. D, and Iron, as well as being equal if not superior in all the other vital nutrients,etc... For us it's much more economical(we use the powdered version) and it lasts so much longer than any type of store bought milk, you just make the amount you need each time. I found some of this info on the trusted Dr. Sears website.
Hope this helps!

Our doctor advised that 2% milk is fine for our 1 year old as long as he has other sources of milk fat - like yogurt (not fat-free yogurt) and/or cheese.
