Kashi cereal is great. As for bread, I'm partial to Milton's Healthy Whole Grain bread. The Milton's Whole Wheat Crackers are pretty yummy as well.
I am looking for whole grain foods that are actually whole grain (not enriched wheat flour
) that don't have high fructose corn syrup as the third ingredient, and that actually taste good. Do they exist? I have tons of whole wheat cereals in my cabinet, ie my fav raisin bran, that contain whole wheat as the first ingredient but sugar follows closely behind on the list. Any suggestions for cereals and other "carb" foods that are actually healthy and yummy? Be as specific as possible so I can send my hubby to the store with guidance! (I'm on bed rest and he never does the shopping!)

Kashi, Go Lean Crunch, Honey Almond Flax.
Truly whole grain, high in fiber and added Omega 3.
Nature's Pride Breads. They have a multi-grain, whole wheat and a whole wheat with honey.
My fave bread brand is Nature's Own(not to be confused with Nature's Pride) and they offer several whole grain choices and they have no high fructose syrup or preservatives.
Orowheat bread uses whole grains AND no HFCS AND taste awesome.
Some of the brands/exact labels for him to look for are:
Kashi Heart to Heart cereal (toasted oats or cinnamon flavor); like fatter Cheerios shape
anything by Nature's Path, including cereal bars, pop tarts, cookies
Back to Nature: they have an amazing line of cookies - c. chip, peanut butter, "Oreos"
Other snacks we eat without HFCS: Pirate's Booty, Annie's bunny grahams (come in various flavors and cheese flavor), Pepperidge Farm goldfish, the snacks mentioned above, Yoplait "Go-gurt Simple" squeeze yogurt tubes, pita chips and hummus, and obviously all the fruits and veggies you are likely already buying!

Plain Cheerios!! They do not have high fructose corn syrup and are filled with whole grains...plus they are cheaper than the other stuff! But, I also agree with all the Kashi answers. They have a ton of products and they are all really good. My husband likes the granola Kashi cereal, that's the only one we've tried. They also make granola and cereal bars that are tasty. They are in the same aisle as the other ones. They also have cookies that are made with dark chocolate chips and some oatmeal raisin ones, they are both good but I'm partial to the chocolate. Those are sometimes with the other cookies but most likely you will find them in the "health food" section of the store.
As far as bread, it doesn't have to be organic but you do have to read labels. We buy Oroweat, oatmeal or whole wheat and both are good. None of the Oroweat/Arnold have HFCS. There are some Sara Lee's that don't and some that do...the ones that come in bigger slices and look more healthy are the ones that don't.
As far as crackers and other snacks...there is this brand of lavosh type breads that are usually in the bread aisle or near the peanut butter. I can't remember the brand but they come in a box with a clear window in the front. They have different types of lavosh or rye toast or pump toast but they are all sort of crackery and really good. I think maybe the box is blue??? Can't remember.
I don't buy anything with HFCS in my house (or at least REALLY try not to to) so I've read a lot of labels! Good luck and hang in there...food is a great way to pass the time on bed rest for sure! ;)

WARNING: Reading the actual labels on your actual food items can be very scary! lol Especially all the ones you always "thought" were healthy (like Raisin Bran - just this week my husband read the labels to our children, and come to find out Raisin Bran has about the same amount of sugar as Cocoa Puffs!!!). :)
We discovered Kashi cereal about 2 years ago. Some are far better than others, but they are NOT loaded down with all the High FCS. The sugars that are in them are usually cane sugars, if I recall correctly. And they are all full of good fiber and 7 whole grains. (So be careful not to overindulge right at first...and they taste good, so you might be tempted to do just that).
They have a whole line of foods:
Frozen dinner entrees that are very good as well. Even frozen pizza. My husband absolutely LOVED their frozen blueberry waffles, but like all the Kellogg's products that had issues with their frozen waffle factories, for whatever reason, the Kashi ones are temporarily out of stock. The Mexicali Black Bean pizza is GREAT. And it even has PROTEIN in it!! :))
There are an assortment of cereal bars too. My 12 year old son loves the pumpkin spice bars, I prefer the apple or blackberry cereal bars myself. :)
OHh.. I almost forgot! Their hot breakfast cereal is great too! My husband eats either the blueberry cereal, the cinnamon cereal, or the hot cereal (either vanilla or cinnamon) EVERY DAY. EVERY. DAY.
We eat NATURE'S PRIDE - 100% NATURAL - DOUBLE FIBER - 100% WHOLE WHEAT BREAD - and it does NOT contain HFCS!!!!
You can also get rolled oats (the regular, whole grain kind - not instant oatmeal) and make it as cereal or in cookies so you control the amount of sugat.
Natures Own breads are free of HFCS.
Anything organic will not have HFCS.
Do you have a whole foods near? they have LOTS of Organic and Natural choices!
send him to trader joes or whole foods. the kashi cereal that is called crunch something is good, my kids call it "rocks" cereal. arnold breads and there is also a bread by milton that is awesome, i have a hard time finding it.
I don't buy much cereal for this reason but if I do it's also Kashi. I like the almond crunch or something like that. It's also really easy to make granola bars. I just put oatmeal, granola, flax seeds, chocolate chips, almond milk, a little butter and maple syrup for sweetener in a mixing bowl and put it in a pyrex dish and bake it. Cut it into bars or sqares and you've got a healthy granola bar that's a lot cheaper than the Kashi ones. I also add raisins and grind up tons of nuts so my kids will eat them, otherwise they'll pick them out :)
Kashi Heart to Heart Honey Toasted (5g sugars) is one of my favorites. You might like the Kashi 7 Whole Grain Flakes (4g sugars) and add your own raisins. since you like raisin bran. I ate alot of Cheerios when I was pregnant because of the low sugar content but I recently found out that it is pretty high on the glycemic index (meaning it raises blood sugar quickly). You could also try good old fashioned oatmeal and add your favorite stuff--raisins, bananas, walnuts, berries, etc. Don't get the "quick 1 minute" because that raises blood sugar faster than the regular.
Great Harvest bread is wonderful, too, if you have a Great Harvest store near by. They have whole grain breads with just the essential ingredients. A favorite of ours is the Honey Whole Wheat. You might also be able to get on their email list so you can keep up with their breads of the month.
