My 18 month old loves Cheerios (without sugar :)) and toast for breakfast and fruit. However, I want him to get used to another low sugar cereal or a healthier cereal. Any ideas??? (He also likes yogurt, cheese, or hard boiled eggs sometimes for a mid morning snack).

Thanks.

How about bran flakes or weetabix? Weetabix are great for adding fruit to such as sliced banana , strawberries or blueberries.

I mostly feed mini wheats (unfrosted) with some banana cut up, Kix to change it up a bit. My daughter will also eat my Kashi cereal as long as I am eating it too.

My husband came up with a way to change cereal time up a bit by mixing 4 oz yogurt with the cereal(no milk) and it was gone!

My son LOVES the Kashi go lean Honey and cinnamon oatmel with bananas in it. He even eats it for dinner sometimes. I think its great for any time of the day and he prefers that oatmeal over the Quaker instant oatmeal which is loaded with sugar. He also likes the multigrain cheerios which is low in sugar and has a lot more vitamins than a lot of other cereals even the regular cheerios. I also buy the kashi go lean waffles cause it has more of everything than regular waffles and I put a tiny bit of honey or agave nector on it. Or even peanut butter and honey on toast. Hope this helps.

Kix claims to be low in sugar. Also, regular Corn Flakes is good.

Besides something like homemade oatmeal, most cereals are not really a good food to have a child become used to... you could try out some health food store cereal brands like Nature's Path, Health Valley, Barbara's, Cascadian Farms, etc., though the form of processing that makes packaged cereals isn't good and many of them also have high amounts of sugars - even a lot of unrefined cane sugar or fruit juice isn't so good.

I love Kix and actually have it myself most mornings either dry or mixed in with Activia Light and some fresh fruit. It sounds a little nasty, but it's actually really good.

Most cereals you think are good actually have tons of sodium/sugar, so you have to read labels carefully.

Cheerios are good, Chex, Kix, Shredded Wheat, Special K, Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies. I've been surprised when looking at products such as Kashi's Strawberry Fields, how many carbs are in them.

Read the labels. Sugar isn't necessarily bad for kids. It's just monitoring the amount they get. Sucrose (table sugar) is natural and some argue better than substitutes. I'd like to see evidence both ways.

Clif bars has a kids' line that has some yummy flavors. You can get them in bulk at Sams Club.

We have one kid who loves breakfast and another who rarely eats it (2 year old). So, we keep NutraGrain bars, granola bars, etc. in our diaper bag for when she is hungry.

Have you tried oatmeal? I was surprised, but my daughter loves it. Plus, you can throw rasins or fruit in there.

Grains can increase inflammation, the major cereal companies so de- natured their products- to increase shelf life- that really there isn't much there to grow a body. However those companies have done an amazing marketing job to convince people this is something to eat at the beginning of the day.
I would suggest using the mid morning snack as breakfast as well, these are nutrient dense and he can grow a body on those things.
If you are wedded to cereal then try health food store brand.
best,k

Chex and Kix are the other two cereals I give my son. You can also check the health food aisle. They have lots of kid cereals that are made with regular sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, which is a better option I think. I'm not anti-sugar, just anti too-much-sugar, and I prefer it to be good sugars when he does have them.

Another thing I give my son is whole grain waffles, toasted. Then I mash up fruit instead of syrup for them. His staple for breakfast is plain yogurt mixed with apple juice and plain oatmeal (not instant) and fruit mixed in. If you want the recipe let me know, you mix it and let it sit overnight then mix with chopped/mashed fruit.

We pretty much eat Cherrios and Whole Foods Organic mini waffles w/ peanut butter in our house.

Since you mentioned he likes yogurt, my son loves Stoneyfield Farms Yo Baby Yogurt with fruit. Recently, I have been freezing it in popsicle molds for those days when he is being fussy and refusing to eat. I also will mix fruit into the yogurt before freezing. What toddler turns down a popsicle for breakfast?

How about hot cereals(oatmeal, farina)? Another favorite of my kids is Pops and Kix both healthy and the kids love them. Since he likes yogurt you could also try granola cereal with yogurt.
