Hi E.,
What's her sister's name? Which would sound best when you call their names together? "Karina/Gianna/Aliyah and ?, time for supper!"
Congratulations!

GIANNA
Karina is cute but Gianna sounds better with your last name.
No one will ever pronounce Aaliyah correctly - she'll have to explain her name for the rest of her life. My daughter's name is Lanie ("Lay-nee")and people can't even get that right.
Best wishes on the new baby.

Think about how people will mispronounce the name or misspell it. Think about how it sounds, saying the full name out loud, softly and emphatically. Think about the initials, and think about the meaning of the name. Those are all things we did. I love unique names. But remember your child will be living with it for a LONG time!
My personal favorite is Karina, because I have a niece in college whose name is Carina. But I'm serious about thinking about the mispronunciations and misspellings. Gianna is pretty but I can see it, along with Aaliyah, being challenging at times. She may have to say "my name is Gianna like Dianna" if that is how it is going to be pronounced--would it be jee-ANN-uh or jee-AH-nah? And is that a g as in giant or go? Would Aaliyah be pronounced AH-lee-ah or AL-ee-ah?
I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm just thinking about my niece. Originally, she was named Chineze (pronounced chih-NAY-za). It is Nigerian and means "God protects". It's a beautiful name with a wonderful meaning. However, I can't tell you how many teachers at the beginning of each year asked if "Chinese" was there. She hated how many people mispronounced her name. Kids had plenty of fun with it, too.
In her late teens after years of this, her dad said, well you can always add an "h" to the end to help people pronounce it. It wouldn't change the meaning. She almost died of frustration...you mean I've lived with this my whole life and it could have been Chinezeh all along?! Ever since, she has added the h at the end. People much more consistently pronounce it the way it was intended. She's now in her mid 20s and mature enough to enjoy her unique name, but it was her own personal hell for years (according to her--LOL).
My siblings have married people born in Nigeria, Turkey, Malaysia, and the U.S. The names in our family are all over the board on uniqueness. I love them! But just think it all out before you make the final choice. What is driving the choice? Family connections, meaning, the sound of it, etc.? Just make sure you don't end up with any unintended consequences that plague your child unwittingly.
Enjoy your baby's arrival and your final choice! Whatever you choose, you will love i!

A friend once told me to yell the name over and over again to make sure you still like it. You'll be calling it for many years! You didn't mention your other daughter's name, so just make sure you are OK with the names together. Gianna seems very nice (and Gia is so cute). It is also a very religious name (if you are into that) meaning "God is gracious."

I think you have to pick the name that you all like the best. That being said, if you're doing a survey, I think Karina is pretty and easy for people to pronounce/recognize. It also has that alliteration of repetition too...the two "c" sounds in a row...sounds good. Good luck with picking the name!

I like gianna. It's fairly original, but not weird ;-)
Aaliyah is a fairly popular sounding name and Karina is nice, but I personally would prefer Corinna. Something about the spelling makes it seem like a made up American name.
You are brave for asking for other peoples opinions! Go with your gut! or wait until you look into her eyes.
COngratulations and remember that none of us here matter!!

I vote for Karina. It sounds gooss with your last name. People will know how to pronounce it and know how to spell it. With the other two, she will probably get sick of have to spell it for people all the time and having to spell it out all the time. And... Karina is pretty.

I like them all, but my vote if for Gianna.
I like it best with your last name. But I also think you should consider how it goes with her sister's name. Try saying the names together, with "and" in between - you will do that A LOT! If you get all tongue tied, you might want to reconsider.
Looking at all the responses, I can see that this isn't really going to help you much, since the votes seem to be pretty evenly distributed. Oh well, thanks for letting us share in your excitement! Best wishes to you and your family.
