Hi, Moms-
I am expecting my first baby this August, and I am overwhelmed by the numerous choices of baby bottles out there. I am planning to breastfeed, and I would like a bottle that is best for preventing gas and spitting up. Which bottle is best? Please help.
I appreciate everyones' responses so much. I knew asking all the moms on Mamasource would be a huge help. I think I will take the advice of several of the moms and buy a few different kinds of bottles to see which one my baby likes the most. Thanks again.

I absolutely hate the Avent bottles - they leak. Also, the Dr. Browns has so many parts to wash. It was annoying to me - I tested one out. I also tried the playtex and did not like using the drop in b/c of the plastic. After much trial and error, I have determined the best bottles are the Born Free. I ended up buying those after getting frusted. They do not leak at all!! good luck.

I have never used these, but I heard the Dr. Browns are good. I used to use the Platex drop in/ liner ones. You can squeese the air out of them. Hope this helps.

I used Avent with both my kids and both kids went back and forth from bottle to breast with no problems at all starting very young. Neither had major issues with gas or spit up. You can get Avent in BPA free - they are the ones with a slightly cloudy appearance.

I think it varies by each baby. I breastfed all 3 of my kids but did pump and need to have occasional bottles. My oldest would only use the Playtex nurser, My middle only used Avent, and my youngest wouldn't take a bottle no matter how many we tried (and we tried them ALL!!). I don't think there is 1 "best" you might have to do some trial and error.

I personally am a playtex drop-in fan. I formula fed my first two daughters with them (21 and 14) and my third is breastfed (6 1/2 months). I always keep some around for good measure but I don't use them much. So if you are breastfeeding you won't need many. All babies however are different and what one baby likes another may not. So as many have already said you may want to trying buying a few different single bottles and see which one you baby takes to the best before stocking up on any specific brand. Hope this helps and good luck with your baby to be, they all are a blessing from heaven.

Playtex drop ins are the best! You don't have to worry about washing too much because you just throw the liner away. I used them for my son who is 12 months and I am still nursing him. He didnt have any nipple confusion. DO NOT use dr. browns. they are horrible bottles. they leak constantly and there are TONS of parts to clean. Its ridiculous. They are only supposed to be used if your child has a medical reason to use them, like colic or acid reflux. Why spend time washing all those bottles when you could be spending that time with your baby? :)

Request one of each bottle type at your baby shower and try them all. Figure out which one your baby likes the best and then go stock up. We tried so many different kinds. My son turns one next week. The brand he picked was Dr. Brown. The other bottles he would toss across the room bc he just didn’t like them. We still have a cabinet full of bottles we never used that were gifts and we are holding onto them bc we want to try for baby # 2 soon. Good luck! Just remember every baby is different in what they prefer so just be patient and don’t invest into just one brand till you know what the baby likes.

Great that you are going to breastfeed!! It's a good feeling knowing you won't need bottles, but if you want one lying around to feed some pumped milk or something a few months down the road, Adiri is a good one to try. It is shaped like a breast and helps your baby keep the idea of the breastfeeding latch more than any other bottle, though please keep in mind it's not exactly the same. Nipple confusion is real; some babies are at risk and some babies are not -- you just don't know until it happens to yours (it did w/ my first, but not my 2nd, btw, thus my philosophy of 'no bottles of any kind until at least a year' w/ my daughter...) ;D Not everyone has the same issues, but it's good to be aware of the potential for problems at least, so you can at least try to nip any probs in the bud should they arise.
Anyway, the Adiri is BPA free and (no separate nipples, bags to replace, or stems to clean).

Congrats on the baby!! We have been using the Evenflo Purely Comfi clear without BPA and have been very happy with them. I agree about being overwhelmed by all the choices. That's how I was when I was doing my registry a few months ago. I told my husband that bottles sure have come a LONG way since I had my daughter 17 years ago! Take care and congrats again on your blessed miracle!

As many other moms have said, each baby is different. I got a 4 oz of several different kinds and did the trial and error thing. I only use them when he is in church childcare or brief stays with m-i-l. My 14 wk old ended up liking the Playtex Drop-in kind the best, but with the Natural Latch nipples instead of the ones that come with the bottle. He seemed to get the most comfortable latch with them. My s-i-l has a 6 month old and he uses that kind as well. My son didn't like the expensive Adiri kind or the Born Free kind either.
Good luck!!

I absolutely loved the Dr. Brown's bottles. They are easy to use and clean and are made to decrease the amount of air a baby takes in while feeding. That would be my recommendation! I am pregnant with my second child and I will be using Dr. Brown's again.
Congrats on your pregnancy!!

I bought a couple of the Playtex drop-ins, one Avent, and one package of the Dr Brown's so we could try them out and then decide. My daughter hated the Playtex. I did too after trying to mix the formula and then having to squeeze/push the liner so she could get all of the formula. The Avent had air bubbles galore and made her tummy hurt from the gas it caused.
We went to the Dr Brown's and they are wonderful. My daughter didn't have any issues with spitting up or gas once we went to those. They won't leak unless you overfill them or don't have the parts assembled correctly. If you use the Dr Brown's get a couple of the dishwasher bins and wash the parts in those. The only thing I hand wash are the nipples.

Can't beat Dr. Brown's! They are the cadillac of bottles in my opinion. My daughter has only had one ear ache and she just turned 6 - and the one ear ache she had was after she turned one year old. Also, we didn’t have colic either because gas wasn’t getting in her tummy! I give them as baby shower gifts! Good luck with your choice.

I LOVE the Dr. Brown bottles. All 3 of my boys had severe reflux and it helped so much. we started out with using Avent with out first baby and it made his gas worse until we switched to the Dr. Browns because our Dr. reccomended them.
As far as washing all the parts, we just put them in a bottle basket in the dish washer and that worked great... or you can use a medela steam sterilizer bag for them also.

I LOVE the Born Free--smaller plastic BPA-free bottles. I think they are 5 ounces. We also have one of the bigger 8oz bottles but have never needed it (and my baby is near 8 mos). My friend bought the same ones in glass and ended up breaking them all so that's why I got the plastic. I too planned to breastfeed, but I'm glad I had these handy because we had a major latching and other problems so I had to pump and feed my baby with these bottles from day 1 for 10 weeks before we were fully breastfeeding. Now she only has them at the sitter. I have had no problem at all with these bottles--I think they are the best! It seems at first they have a lot of parts but they can go in the dishwasher and also I used to sterilize them using the Medela micro-bags I used for my pump parts. Truly depdendable.

the best advice i got on this was that all kids are different.
Register for a 4 oz bottle of each kind and try them out...that way you aren't stuck with a million bottles that you don't use and ones that are in multipacks.
that being said, mine didn't really take a bottle, my 2nd does, i stuck w/ Mr. Brown's as well...
if you go to the right start website at www.rightstart.com they are in bankruptcy and have some good sales on em.
good luck

The key to your question is which bottle can I breastfeed with. I only sell the Adiri breast bottle because it encourages the same latch as at the breast. I have been told that women can feel which bottle was given by the way the baby comes back to the breast even though they have no problems going back and forth. The Adiri has an air vent at the back but no confusing tubes that can get bacteria from milk no cleaned out well.
When a baby takes a bottle they pull thier tongue back from the gums and make suction by closing thier gums and lips on the nipple. When they nurse at the breast the tongue comes over the lower gum and the suction is made with the lips. This is what causes biting and nipple confusion in many babies.
You can get the Adiri in many places including The Nestingplace. It is BPA free.

I love the BornFree bottles! My baby is 6 months old, and he really likes those bottles. The nipple shape is great for breastfed babies, and they are BPA free. We purchased the newborn starter kit, which was perfect because it includes 3 5oz bottles (which are great for the first several months), one 9oz bottle and a training cup. Then several months after your baby is born all you need to get are the stage 2 nipples and a couple more 9oz bottles, which are better for when the baby starts drinking 6-8 ounces per feeding. It was around $45 at Babies R Us, and you can use a 15% or 20% off coupon to make it cheaper! :o)

Plus all you have to clean is the nipple and top part and throw the liner away! You can even get the target brand liners which are cheaper. Congrats on your baby, my husband and I tried for a year and a half and it is amazing to finally get that miracle! God bless you guys!

I would just recommend not to get too many of one type of bottle since some babies will only take certain nipples/bottles. Luckily, my girls weren't picky at all, but some babies are very picky!
Everyone has their opinion, but I liked the Avent bottles. The mouth of the bottle is nice and big, and it made it easy to scoop the formula in once I switched from breastfeeding to formula.
I also know that a lot of people like the Dr. Brown's bottles for preventing gas and spitting up. I didn't ever try them. It just seems like a lot of parts to wash! Just my 2 cents!
Good luck to you!!

Whatever you decide, dont get too many and dont open them all just in case you need to return them...I wasted so much money getting bottles that everyone recommended and they didnt work out for me. I would get a couple at first and then once you figure out which ones the baby prefers, go buy more of that one. My daughter (now 8) did fine with any bottle, but my twin sons (now 4) had gas/spitting up issues and Dr Brownes worked great for them. I did not like the Dr Brownes nipples though. I had to get a different brand nipple (one that was slower flowing). Good luck with whatever you decide and good luck with your new baby!

I wouldn't invest a lot of money in bottles until you know which one your baby will take. I had a full Avent collection and my baby wouldn't touch them. My ped suggested that we go to Target and get one of each kind until we found one she liked. Thinking of saving time, I tried all of the easy to clean ones first. She wasn't having it. Finally, I tried Dr.Brown's and it was love at first sight. She took it immediately and stuck with it until she switched to a sippy cup.

Every baby is different. I would buy a few of each and see which one they like. The key may not be the bottle you chose but the nipple that they will take from. I used the Playtex Ventaire mainly because my son liked the larger soft (brown) nipples and that was one of the brands that carried a choice of nipple styles. So instead of scrapping the whole system like with Dr. Brown's or Avent I was able to just find a nipple he liked. My best friend had twins and swore by Dr. Brown. Babies r us will allow you to return bottles that babies don't like.

I think I tried one of every kind of bottle because my baby was so gassy and I could hear him gulping air. We settled on the Dr. Browns bottles. Because they seemed to be the best about keeping the air out of his stomach. The Born Free bottles are also good but more expensive.
The Dr. Browns came pretty clean in the dishwasher but they also come with bottle brushes to get in the hard to clean parts. We also had a sterilizer that we put the bottles in after we washed them.
For us, the Dr. Brown's are the very best out there. And the extra pieces to clean were worth it to us because our baby seemed more comfortable after a meal.
Also, we found the WIDE MOUTH Dr. Brown's were the easiest to clean. Babies R Us has coupons and sales for these periodically and you can get them for a great price! They are on sale until 4/30 and if you email me, I can send you some coupon links.
Hope this helps!

I breast fed my son exclusively for 13 months & worked full time. I used the Playtex drop ins & NUK. (the design of the NUK nipple is supposed to make the trasition easier.) I preferred the NUK bottles. We didn't have any trouble with spitting up or gas. That may just depend on your baby. I would recommend waiting a week or so after you first have the baby before introducing the bottle so you can get breast feeding established. I used a Medela Pump in Style to express the milk. I preferred the Gerber milk storage bags or Lanisoh. I agree with the advice to buy a couple different types before you have the baby & see what works best in your situation.

Born Free by far. These are Bis-A free bottles. Every well known bottle-Avent, Gerber, Evenflo, Dr. Browns, playtex etc. ARE ALL TOXIC. The chemical they leach into the breast milk or formula has been proven to cause diabetes and other diseases. Doctors are even saying don't use them. You can get Born Free everywhere now-Target, Baby's r Us, Whole Foods etc. You pay a little more, but it's worth it, not only to avoid the toxic chemical but also it has a vent to prevent gas, spitting up and ear problems.
