Anybody has anythng to say about Dr. Brown bottles. I have a 2.5m old, used to use Avent and hated them-she gulped too much air on them. Switched to simples narrow Gerber... but has lots of gaz and fussiness. We are using Godd Start formula and like that- she's doing better after I switched her to that from Enfamil LIpil. So now we are looking for new bottles, and everybody's rec. Dr. Browns. Do they really make any difference? She also only takes in 3-3.5 oz a feeding and eats every three ours at night... any advise?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi everybody, THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the wonderfull responces and advise, and words of encauragement. Really appreciated. We have switched to Dr. Brown's bottles- and I really do think that that they make a difference! !st of all, she took the bottle with no problem and no rooting and re-rooting in the middle of feedings as she did with Avent. She feeds much more calmly, and def. no more gulping air! Much better, much less gas afterwards. Just small burps.
She has however been just diagnozed with MILK PROTEIN ALLERGY- she had a reaction, so now we've been switched to Nutramigen- and althought she's just recovering from the systemic reaction (acouple of days ago) She's already doing much better, Thank G-d. Again, thank you for caring!

Love them! My daughter is now 19 months and has used them since she was born. She never had any issues with gas, spitting up, or colic. Would recommend them completely. They do take a lot of work to clean, but it's worth it. Only suggestion is that you use the Dr. Brown bottle brush because others will scratch.

My little boy was very gassy, and I tried umpteen different kinds of bottles, including Dr. Browns. None made a huge difference. Then my boss, who has a daughter a few months older suggested I try putting a dose of mylicon gas drops in every bottle. OMG what a difference! He fussed less, he slept better, and was just a generally happier baby not having to deal with those gas pains all the time. I asked my pediatrician and she said this is totally safe up to 12 bottles a day. One drawback... brand name mylicon is expensive... try the generic walmart version. Much cheaper and works just as well.

I, too, ended up switching my daughter's bottles and formulas do too fussiness and gas and we ended up going to Dr. Browns when she was around 2 months old. They worked great for her and she did seem to have less fussiness and gas. They are a bit involved when it comes to putting them together and cleaning them, but very worth it. I bought the dishwasher baskets made for the Dr. Browns bottle parts and put them in the dishwasher to clean them. My daughter is 10 months old now and we are still using them. Many other new moms I know are also using them and love them. Hope this helps.

I *loved* our Dr. Brown's bottles. We used the glass, which I would recommend. They now have the BPA-free plastic ones, but I always figure it is just a matter of time until they find some other chemical in plastic that's bad for the kids-- glass is much safer, esp if you heat the milk at all. They are a little bit of of a pain, but get the Dr. Brown drying rack and a good dishwasher basket and you'll be fine.

BTW, I agree that the Good Start is easier on tiny little tummies-- my son was mostly bf'd, but got some supplemental formula and we started with the Organic Similac and then switched to the Good Start because of gas. By 3, 3.5 months, he was able to go back to the Organic Similac, but we were grateful to have the good Start (with Natural Cultures) until his little tummy got bigger. The gas stage does pass-- no pun intended!

I use Dr. Brown's bottles and love them. i have a four year old who we used the Avent bottles and she threw up, a lot, after every feeding until about the age of 9 months. So with my second people recommended Dr. Brown. I tried them and my son has had no colic, rarely throws up, and rarely gassy. I would recommend you try them.
BEst of luck

I used them for about 4 months, and had no issues with performance. As long as you don't overfill, they don't leak. But, I thought the pieces were a pain to deal with. I switched to Born Free (also a vented system) and think that the pieces are easier to wash and just less annoying to handle. They are also made from nice, safe, BPA-free plastic, just like Dr. Brown's. Price is similar.

Hi M., I have never heard of Dr. Brown bottles, but I will recommend playtex bottles. I started using them when my oldest was about 3 months old on the advice of our Dr (who had two small daughters of his own at that point). The playtex bottles with the drop in linners are easy to use, easy to clean, you can warm them up simply with a large cup of hot water in a couple of minutes and you can push out all the air before you give your baby the bottle! I loved them from the start and used them for all three of mine and have recommended them to everyone since. Best wishes.

We used Dr. Browns (wide-neck, easy to hold and easy to clean). I was breastfeeding and pumping and wanted my husband to help out with midnight feedings sometimes (or even just when he got home from work, so I could get a break). We tried a BUNCH of different bottles, including the Adiri BreastBottle nurser, the Avent, the Medela and the Playtex drop-ins, but the only thing that worked (and that my daughter would take) was the Dr. Browns. When she gave up the bottle, she switched effortlessly to a straw-cup from there and wouldn't touch a sippy cup (I have quite a collection of those, too!) Hope that helps!

the main thing is to burp the baby well so they do not get too much gas. try mylicon drops either in the formula or after. do the bicycle motion with her legs and rug her tummy counter clockwise. i liked the advent bottles and thought they were supposed to be decent but every baby is different. i would see what the other mom's say and do some online research. good luck...

I loved them but I would recommend the short fat bottles. I found the tall narrow bottles were more likely to leak.

They are kind of a pain in the butt to wash though

My son will be 3 months on the 16th. I bought some of the 8 oz. Dr. Brown's bottles...I thought they were awesome. They take only a moment to put together and they don't have that vacuum affect. My son had a tendancy to suck the nipples shut and not get any formula and with the new bottles he never has that problem, unless you heat the bottle with all parts attached and the bottle closed or close the bottle right after washing before fully dry. I always store it in pieces and never have a problem, and then put it quickly together while the bottle is warming. I use the Good Start Soy, it is alot thinner than the Enfamil or Similac, but the bottles still work wonderfully. I would recommend you try them, even if you only purchase one for starters...I think it would be a good investment for you and your daughter. Before we switched to the Good Start, my son was vomiting at least half his formula and the combo of the new formula and bottles has done him wonders!!! I hope this helps!

Hi M.~

I absolutely love the Dr Brown bottles. I sware by them!! I went through the same thing you did with having bottle issues.......tried everything. Someone told me about Dr Brown so I went and bought them and they were perfect!!! The nipples have 4 stages and work fantastic.......they are a little time consuming with the cleaning but I am sure, like me, you could care less about that! The system seems to work great. I just had another baby and will only use those bottles.......they're the best!

Hi M.! I had the same problem with the Avent bottles with my daughter. After she was about 2 months old and we had changed formulas and she was still miserable, we changed to Dr. Brown. She was a million times better and has been using them ever since (she is almost 10 mths old).
They are a pain to clean though with several different parts, but they were worth it for us.
Good luck!

All I have every used are Dr Brown bottles. The extra effort it takes to wash the extra parts is totally worth the outcome, in my opinion. My baby loved them and I plan on using them again with my next one.

as the rest have said, we love them too. they are one of the only bottles that are bpa free also. the fda has admitted that bpa can cause developmental delays, and possibly cancer, and conception issues especially in females. there are studies that have linked brain damage also. if you know, i feel you should protect your children.

We used Dr Browns bottles and our son had absolutely no issues with gas. That said, I have no idea whether it's due to the bottles or whether he was just a non-gassy baby. The only thing to note is that the Dr Browns bottles have about four parts - the bottle, nipple, straw thing and the insert above the straw. If you hand wash your bottles, it'll take you much longer to clean. We always threw ours in the dishwasher, so it wasn't that big of a deal.

I used Dr Brown bottles for my first, second and plan to for my third. Aside from very young infancy "adjustment to outside world" gas (before I even used bottles), my kids have had no problems with gas. Your daughter is VERY young, and her feedings are very small, so she's probably having normal adjustment gas that will pass. But the Dr Brown bottles are great.

Hi M.- My son had reflux as an infant he is 12 months old now. I tried all sorts of bottles and found the Dr. Brown's bottles are the best. We were fortunate that it took one formula switch to similac sensitive r.s. and then combined with the bottles he was a happy baby. I recommend these bottles to everyone!! They have the bpa free ones now too.

Hi M.. My daughter is now 8 months old and I've been using the Dr. Brown's since she was a month old. She's always had very bad gas, as well as terrible spit ups. As far as gulping air, I can't say that she's had that problem. I also have only used the smallest nipple, b/c I tried changing and I watched as she gulped down several ounces in just minutes. I would say give them a try, but be forewarned, they're a pain to clean. They have a ton of little parts to them. Good luck!

We used Dr. Brown's for the first year and then switched to Born Free (needed new ones and Dr. Brown's didn't have the BPA free at that time). We love both bottles and have NEVER had any gas or digestion problems with either bottle. They have lots of parts and can take awhile to wash, but it's well worth it. We always hand-washed because the dishwasher put a "cloud" on everything. Good luck!

I used Dr. Brown's with my daughter, who had MAJOR gas, spitting up issues for the first couple months of her life. I was desperate to take her pain & discomfort away (not to mention eliminate the middle-of-the-night projectile vomiting in my bed :). We ended up having to use Nutramigen($$$)formula & Dr. Brown bottles & she was much more comfortable & had very few issues after that. It was a positive change for all of us! Good luck... I hope you find something that works for you & your baby!

As the mother of twins, we used Avent at first for both, however, Avent didn't seem to do well with one of my twins, so we switched to Dr. Brown's and had much success...less air, better digestion, decreased acid reflux, etc. Highly recommend.

Working with infants I have used many different bottles. With that said I think the Born free bottles are great. The pieces are easier to wash, and the vent system appears to work much the same as Dr. Brown's. I love glass bottles, but if you are taking your daughter to day care you need to check to see if they are able to use glass bottles. Not every center allows them due to safety issues. Best of luck in your new adventures as a working mom!
