Hello. Me and my husband are trying for our first baby. We had sex on August 11th. And every other day since. My highest fertility day was the 11th. My period normally comes on the 27 or 28th. I was wondering when I could take a test. Some people I know took one a week after and got positive results, some had to wait after there missed period. Honestly I'm too excited to find out.. I want to take one today but don't want to see a negative sighn and get my hopes up.. Any suggestions? Please stay positive in the comments.

What can I do next?

I always waited until my period was at least 7 days late. Those tests are too expensive to waste them foolishly. If you want to have a baby now is a good time to start practicing patience because you will need lots of patience once the baby comes!

Oh what did people do before any of these tests were available?
Either you're having a baby in 9 months or you're not.
I read something in an old Merck Manual my Mom had which said something like: positive proof of a pregnancy is delivery of a baby.
(Well duh!)
It seems there are plenty of things that can mimic a pregnancy and at the same time there are women who show no signs of being pregnant at all (they had irregular periods for what ever reason so skipping a few didn't give them a clue and/or they never register on pregnancy tests) suddenly giving birth.
Try to relax and let life happen!

How do you *know* your highest fertiility day was on the 11th? Are you charting? Are you using ovulation predictor kits?

You should buy the book "taking charge of your fertility" - it will give you good info about how your cycle works.

Typically - you can test at 12 days DPO - that is *typcially* TWO days before you would miss your period. HOWEVER, this assumes that you KNOW when you ovulated because you're charting. You cannot take the "difference between periods" and use that to tell when you are ovulating, because every woman is different.

If you are charting using your temp you will know that you are pregnant the fastest - before the HCG test, because your temp will not drop. Your temp usually drops 4-5 days before your period if you have NOT conceived. If you have conceived your temp will not drop.

I can also tell you this..... try not to "symptom spot" - which means every little "my boobs hurt" you think you're pregnant. Every time you're tired - "it must be because I'm pregnant".... except that you haven't tested yet and wouldn't even be far enough along that you would be having symptoms (which is typicall the 6 week mark - or 2 weeks after you miss your period)!!!!!! I have been pregnant five time and the only time I ever had a bunch of symptoms before I missed my period and was SURE I'd be pregnant was when my tests were negative!!!!!!!!!!

If you KNOW you ovulated on the 11th - timing-wise.....
1. the egg stays in the Fallopian tube for 24 hours waiting to be fertilized.

2. If it's fertilized it stays in the Fallopian tube another 3-4 days.
So at this point - It would be FIVE DPO (days past ovulation), and the fertilized egg is not even implanted yet - which, if you ovulated on the 11th would be the 16th (15th at the earliest).

3. Another week to implant: Your egg can float around your uterus for up to 4 days (Aug 20th), before it attaches. And complete attachment can take up to 4 (Aug 24th) days. That is EIGHT DAYS after the fertilized egg reaches the uterus for your body to begin producing HCG.
It will take a couple days for your body to begin producing enough HCG to register positive on a test.

In my opinion, you should test on the 27th. 25th would be the ABSOLUTE EARLIEST - but be prepared for a negative.

Good Luck

You won't get a positive only a week after. They are mistaken and must have been pregnant before they even had sex. Implantation does not even happen for 7-10 days after ovulation. They would then need some time for their bodies to release the proper amount of detectable HCG hormones.

Long story short. The most sure fire way to get a positive or negative, is to wait until your missed period. You can take a test whenever you want, but 7 days after you have sex will not give you an accurate test.

I would wait until you have missed your period for the whole week.

FYI, the Dollar Store Pregnancy test work as well as the ones from the drug stores. This will save you a lot of money.

If you can afford to waste $12 (or whatever they costs these days), take it whenever you want.

But, it's still really early. It will probably show up negative at this point even if you are pregnant. Wait till the end of the month.

You really should wait until at least the first day of a missed period, or the day after if your cycle is erratic. Use first morning urine. The new tests say they can test 5 days or a week before you miss your period, but what they detect all too often is the natural rise and fall of hcg in the system. Your hcg can elevate and register on a home test making you think you're pregnant when you're not. It's much better to wait until you miss your period.

Then you can let your doctor know, and if it's a good OB/GYN they'll schedule a blood test to confirm. Then they'll schedule an ultrasound for when you estimate to be 8-to-10 weeks along, gestational age, to check for a heartbeat.

If you tested now and only have elevated hcg, but then get your period on the 27th or 28th, you'll just be disappointed and think that you're having a miscarriage. It's far better to wait.

I never got a positive before I was 10 days past ovulation. I'd wait another 2-3 days and then test.

Wait until you are due at least. Why waste a test when 3 days later you will know,

If you can afford the tests, take them every morning! :-) If you're budgeting, wait. While waiting, eat, drink and live as though you are pregnant to protest baby if they are in there! :-) Good luck!

I say get yourself to a dollar store and test once a day! I would think a positive can happen at 10 days past ovulation, but dont get discouraged if you don't. I was a crazy tester, started about 7 dpo always...

It really sounds like you want to test...so go for it!

Oh BTW, the dollar stores is one of the most sensitive tests made...so don't think that they are less quality...they are actually better quality than the expensive ones....they just don't come with that expensive plastic handle ;)

First of all you want to have sex frequently BEFORE your highest fertility day, not after. That said, I would recommend waiting as long as possible (trust me, I know this is hard I finally got a positive test last week). I didn't listen to my own advice and took an early response test 4 days before and 1 day before my missed period. Both negative. I was bummed, but still knew that I could be pregnant. Waited until I was 2 days late and took another, positive! If I'd waited from the beginning I would've saved myself some heartache and worry. With my first pregnancy, I was a full week late before testing positive. So ultimately, whenever you test, a negative is only a negative if you've actually started your period. Good luck!
ETA: My first symptoms were menstrual like cramps, which are completely normal in the beginning. So don't assume it's your period about to come if you get them, too!

With my first baby, I was very excited too to find out early. I took the test 5 days before my missed period and got a negative result. We went on vacation that week to Florida and I went about my business as if I couldn't be pregnant. Before we returned, I felt really funny and I fainted. For the remainder of the trip, I took it easy and when we returned, took a second pregnancy test. It turned out to be positive and now that son is 6 years old.

My advice- get the test strips. Be sure to get a few of them in a packet because you may be too early to have enough hormones for a positive result. Good luck with your outcome!

I know you are excited but wait until the 27th. Maybe the 25th at the earliest.
