When Is It Time for a Sippy?

My son is 10 months old. He takes interest in sippy cups, but unfortunately he just likes to play with the cups and tops. When I offer him juice or water he refuses to take them in the sippy. I will continue to offer it to him, but I was wondering what other moms have tried doing. And at what age is it a good time to start offering a sippy?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ah, perhaps that is where my error is. The sippy cups he has are the ones with the hard spout. Huge difference from the bottle nipple. I will buy the ones with the rubbery spouts and see how that goes..Thanks to everyone for their advice....God Bless

I have been there! My son took forever to learn to drink from a sippy cup! The best advice I can offer is, be patient and keep trying but don't push! I kept buying different sippy cups until I found one that my son liked. It turned out to be this random one I got at Costco of all places, but I had a dozen other suggestions from people that worked for their kids. My son really didn't start until about 13 months, but it did eventually happen!!!
GOOD LUCK!

It varies a lot with children. Some parents start at 4 months. My sister in law did. Of course she did the holding. My second child wanted nothing to do with a sippy at all. I finally bought a cup with a straw and she loved it. I did too, because I didn't have to break her from a sippy cup. I would try that and if the baby can use the straw then you won't have to break them of it. They also make trainer cups. A handle on both sides and place on the lid to tip it. Sippy cups are hard work. They have to hold them and then learn they have to tip it up and suck if you leave the slow flow thing in there. Good Luck!!!

My daughter did the same thing. I just kept giving her one during her meals and would pretend to drink out of it myself. She eventually got the idea and now she loves them. She did go through about 5 different kinds before she found one she really liked. Fortunately for me they are the cheap Nubbies from Wal-Mart. They are $1.74 each. I think she likes the top because it is soft like the bottles nipples. I am not sure about which one was referenced before because mine have lasted over 6 months and there still going. Good luck and hang in there, he will get it soon.

My oldest used a sippy from about 6mos on, but my other two pretty much went straight from boob to regular cup.

A lot of change comes with fits and crying... it's part of life. Even for adults sometimes ;) Begin offering liquid only in a sippy cup. The cheapy ones from Walmart that are often in the dollar bin, don't last long, but are and excellent transisiton from bottle to sippy cup. The have a soft nipply spout. From there you can slowly morph into the hard tipped style or straw style.

It sounds like you're doing a good job at offering it! That's really all you can do. ;) My daughter wasn't very interested in them until she was almost a year old. One day she just decided that she liked them! :)

I found a sippy that kind of has a rubbery spout, he chewed on it for a while, then when he noticed that juice came out he eventually started to suck. It just came with a lot of trying, but the rubbery spout seemed to help! Hope it helps!
