When Do the Naps End?

My daughter is 22 months old. She sleeps around 7:30pm to 7:30am just fine. The last couple of weeks she has fought me with her naps. She will stay up for an hour talking in her crib (there aren't any toys in her bed)and then finally go to sleep. Some days she won't even fall asleep and I'll end up taking her out after an hour of listening to her talk. I think I am in trouble since the past two days, she hasn't taken a nap and she hasn't been grumpy in the evening. I am sooo hoping that she has outgrown the naps. At what age do little ones outgrow their naps? I guess it is pay back from when I never slept as a child.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your suggestions. I do think a little quite time is important at her age, so I will keep trying to put her down (fingers crossed). As long as she doesn't learn how to climb out of her crib then I should be alright.

My older son took naps until he was 3 1/2 and my 19 months has to have a nap if he doesn't he is one grumpy baby. He typically naps from 12-2:30 and then goes down at 7:30 until 7:30am.

I think every child is different but I do think at 22 months a child still does need a nap, she might be going through a phase.

Good Luck

I don't think naps are an option until age 3 or 4. Maybe you're putting her down too late for her nap. If she's over tired when you put her in her crib, she won't be able to sleep well. My daughter often napped as early as 11:00 when she was that age.
This may be some sort of phase, but whether or not she sleeps you should stay consistent with the rest time. My 20 month old naps from 1 to 3. My 3 1/2 yr old doesn't always nap but regardless, she has "rest time" for those same two hours.

my children have never been sleepers. my son stopped napping at 20 months (he sleeps 11 hours at night) and my 18 mo old naps for 1 1/2 hours and only sleeps 10 hours at night. I have had my children to sleep specialists and they said my children are of the lucky few that do not require much sleep.(not so lucky for me!! ha!!)

just listen to your heart and find a something that works for you.

Hi M.,

My 16 week old will not take naps. I am lucky if he will sleep for 30 minutes during the day. You are so lucky that your daughter has been such a great napper!

My oldest stopped napping at 4,5 years. He also sleeps for 11 hours at night. My middle one just turned 3 and still naps for 1,5 hours. (also sleeps 11 hours at night) I'm sooooo happy they sleep, so you have some time for yourself. Sometimes they fight the napping, but I've alwyas just put them in bed and after a week or so we were back to the normal schedule. If they are still awake after 45 min, I take them out, but that rarely happens.
I hope for you she will go back to the naps, their naps keep me sane (i've 3 boys)

Good luck, and happy holidays, I.

My daughter no longer naps ...so sad...she is 3 1/2. She will sometimes fall asleep on the couch watching her shows but not very often. The whole time change thing really blows too. She was waking up at 7am and now its usually 5:30 sometimes 6am at the latest. This is hard w/ her not taking naps for me. She goes to bed at 8pm so you figure she would be dead tired and want a nap. She is a very active girl but just never tires so I guess all kids are different with the nap issue. Id just keep trying as long as you can to make it happen though. I had to give up b/c she would lay in there awake or crying for 45min and never sleep for days on end so I figure it was doing her no good to keep on with it b/c it just wasnt going to happen. SHe went from asking me if she could take a nap to refusing so its a hard thing to deal with. Godd luck!

if nothing else keep it rest time and consistant, she seems content if she's just talking.

As another poster mentioned, each child is different. My oldest never napped after the age of 2, whereas my youngest napped until he was well over 4. With your daughter going to bed so early and sleeping fairly late (my son that napped for so long was an early riser - 6am), she may be getting enough sleep. If she's not grumpy, then she's likely fine with the sleep she is getting. If you really need her to nap for some reason, you could try putting her to bed later, but I personally would stick with what you have - to me it was a godsend to have my second child going to bed early for a while.

I think naps end around 3 years old. She may just be going through a phase, but at not even two years old, she probably still needs a good one to two hour nap. My son is 21 months and he naps from 1 to 4 and sleeps from 8 to 7. But, every child is different. I got most of my sleep help from Marc Weissbluth's book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child.

Good luck!
