What Won't You Do??

Ok Mamas. Every Mom is a little different but I was sitting in bed last night listing the things I don't do because they are "unhealthy" or "cause cancer". Here are some:

1. I don't put plastic in the microwave.
2. Our family doesn't eat or drink anything Diet or Sugar Free because of Aspartame.
3. I almost always talk on speakerphone because I think I'll get brain cancer if I hold it up to my head.
4. I don't let anyone stand in front of a microwave (I have a thing about microwaves and wished I didn't even use them at all LOL)

There is more but you get the idea.... What crazy little things won't you do because you think its harmful to you? Don't get me wrong I do plenty of OTHER things that are just as harmful like lay out in the sun, have a smoke every once in awhile when I'm having a girls night and drinking. But just the little everyday things that have turned into habbit?? Just wondering if I'm the crazy one or if there is something thats bad I didn't know about!

What can I do next?

I, too, don't put plastic in the microwave--or use plastic wrap to cover food in the microwave.

But, I do drink diet sometimes, I use my cell AS IS--no hands free, I occasionally eat an unwashed banana, I don't wipe off the tops of my canned goods and I smoke...I guess I'm just a rebel!

Just had to LOL Catherine C. I too am pretty smug about what's in my grocery cart and am proud of my home cooking, organic gardening and shopping at the local farmer's market (to which I ride my bike and bring my help grocery stacks) but have Diet Coke everywhere. It's pretty sad when people can bribe me at work to bump their project to the top of my list by dropping of a cold 20 oz. bottle at my desk in the afternoon! That stuff is my vice but it's probably rotting out every organ I have.

I'm one of those crazies that won't drink diet anything either, and actually I don't drink any soda. In fact, I don't buy anything with preservatives or artificial colors or high fructose corn syrup. And I don't eat fast food or give it to my kids. Hmmm, other things- We use only physical blocker sunscreens and no body products with phalates or SLS. and no plastic storage containers or plastic in the microwave. Who knows if it will help us live longer healthily... but I'm comfortable with the choices for today.

If you do research, you will probably find that media has hyped up so much of this and that which cause cancer that you are probably taking a chance just by taking your next breath.

We believe in eating right, living right, getting good exercise, keeping our brain engaged and simply having common sense.

My life if too precious to sit around worring about what if's all the time. I try to make a positive difference and if I happen to get some dreaded disease then yes, I would be upset about it but I would not dwell on it either. I believe in living my life to the fullest and being positive.

I refuse to let all the media hype turn me into a hermit.

Yikes, I must be some kind of weirdo, I don't think about this stuff at all! Of course we use sun screen and all wear our seat belts, but that is common sense I think! I love plastic, my micro and my diet cherry pepsi! And I don't think twice about it when I'm talking on my cell! OMG! I must be in big trouble! Oh well....

You do realize that statistically you are much more likely to get cancer from sun exposure and smoking (even occaisonally) than from something like cell phone use that hasn't even been proven to have any harmful effects? Remember, there's all kinds of theories out there about what could be harmful and what's okay, and they change all the time. Personally, I stick with what's been proven by years and years of solid, fact-based research.

I don't drive faster than 75, I always wear my seat belt, I won't ever have a gun in my house, I never use pesticides in my yard or on my houseplants (I can't even walk down the lawn & garden care aisle at Home Depot because I find the smell so toxic) and I always wear sunscreen and stay in the shade as much as possible.
I do drink wine and eat rich, artery clogging foods (in moderation, of course!) I drink too much coffee.
I also have the very rare smoke ;)

I do all four of those things that you listed; we are the exact same way. :-) Some other things we do:

We don't drink out of anything plastic (we use glasses at home and stainless steel water bottles when we're out). We also store leftovers in glass containers.

I limit the amount of cheap plastic toys that my kids get because of lead and other chemicals that could be in them (and we don't have money for expensive stuff, so really we don't buy them any toys except for Christmas and birthdays).

We bought sunscreen that was a little expensive because of the chemicals in the "cheaper" ones; this issue frustrates me because it's hard to say which is more harmful, the UV rays or the chemicals.

Our cleaning products are all "natural" (to avoid the harmful chemicals but also because I'm allergic to the fumes in most household cleaning products). The Trader Joe's cleaning spray they have is awesome!

We also buy organic whenever we can and avoid meat whenever possible.

So I'm right there with you! We can be "crazy" together. :-)

hhhhhmmm never really thought of it...

I use hot water to defrost frozen items (meat, cheese, etc.) instead of the microwave...never thought about the plastic - but looking back quickly - I don't use the microwave that much...

I guess I'll have to "watch" myself and see what I won't do....

seems as if my list is increasing....well, no, changing....as I age!

NO to the plastic wrap in the microwave. No to foam/plastic in the microwave.

When I come home from the grocery store, as much of the food as possible is put into glass storage jars. I keep very few boxes in my cabinets. I do not want cardboard drawing bugs!

I insist on water & milk as much as possible. Limit the juice & soda. Decaf tea is okay, tho'.

Do not throw away recyclables in my house! We have curbside pickup each week....recycling is easy!

Floor patrol each night...I do not want to have to clean as soon as I get up! This is especially important with my daycare. & I don't want doggie germs on my stuff.

Lots of others, but that's enough!

I think it's hilarious that you won't use a cell phone close to your head but you'll inhale cigarette smoke once in awhile - bad bad bad;)

Anywho, a lot of our (both my husband & I are pretty much on the same page) are a mix of health reasons and environment reasons for why we choose to do these things:
1. we don't buy bottled water - this is both for environmental & health reasons. we use a filter and just filter tap water and pour into re-usable drink containers.

2. we are part of community supported agriculture for all of our vegetables, fruit & meat. Again, both health & environment and to support or local economy & farmers.

3. we compost & garden - health & environment

4. we don't use our cell phones in our cars at all - they've determined that driving while on the phone isn't as bad as drunk driving...it's something like 23 times WORSE than drunk driving. So, I'm going to say we do this for health reasons;)

5. I go in the sun sans sunscreen for about 10 minutes per day - just enough to get my vitamin D intake (they say that's about all you need) and then put on my sunscreen.

6. we don't buy or eat anything with high fructose corn syrup - one of the worst things you can put in your body. caveat: i'm not going to say we NEVER do this - every candy bar is made with it as are all the U.S. sodas. If we can't find Mexican coke (we live in So.Cal), then we may very very very occassionally have something with High Fruc Corn Syrup in it. Also note, that all of Europe has banned HFCS because it is so horribly bad for our bodies. We use it because it's way cheaper than sugar.

7. I try not to put plastic in the microwave, but I admit that when I do I sit there thinking how bad it is and how I shouldn't be doing it and I kinda beat myself up over it;) Then I enjoy my organic pasta & sauce - ha ha.

This list makes it sound like we're kinda nuts, but I swear, we're not freaks about it - everything in moderation. We have the knowledge so we try to apply it as best we can.

I'm more of the "never say never" variety. Learned to be that way after having a child with multiple special needs conditions.

The only thing health related I'm obsessive about is sunblock. As a fair skinned redhead, I always make sure we're covered in that stuff before going outside. I have a huge fear of skin cancer because so many in my family have had it (and two have very serious cases of it and may not survive).

Oh, and one more: I'm big on sterilizing sponges in the microwave every day. Ugh, the germs in those if you don't.

My concerns aren't over her contracting diseases, but cracking her head open. My husband, being a mechanic, is accident prone; I'm quite clumsy one week a month; my daughter's hit her head more times in 3 short years than I think I ever had! And I worry constantly about her doing it more, even though it hasn't seemed to affect her brain any. In fact she's speaking better than some 3 year olds I've seen.
I'm afraid all the chapstick she steals and eats will harm her even though I've read it won't. I'm worried because she keeps waking up with "bites" and we don't know where from. And because there's a history of MRSA in our family so I know how easily they can turn from a bite to an abcess.

I don't put plastic in the microwave, and I don't use the microwave very often. Not because I'm worried about it causing cancer, I just don't like what nuking food does to the flavor and texture, and I don't like the idea of eating bits of plastic that might have melted into the food.

I don't eat or drink anything labeled "diet," "light," "fat-free," or "sugar-free." I can taste the difference between sugar and lo-cal/no-cal sweeteners and the fake stuff leaves a vile aftertaste in my mouth. Aspartame also gives me migraines.

I won't buy margarine or turkey bacon. I buy real butter and pork bacon. Again, not because of health concerns, but because they taste better.

I minimize the things I buy that are made with HFCS. It's NOT the same as sugar, I don't care what the commercials say. I CAN taste the difference, and my body can tell the difference.

I won't eat foods I don't like just because they are good for me. There are plenty of foods I DO like that are just as nutritious.

Most of the things I won't do aren't for health reasons, but just because I don't wanna and nobody can make me.

I got rid of my microwave. I got rid of my cordless phone. I use a cell phone only in emergency. I use a hard-wired internet connection. I thankfully, never purchased a wireless baby monitor.

This is meter I purchased for measurement:
http://www.gigahertz-solutions.com/en/Online-Shop/Measure... (In case anyone is interested.)

I had to give up my yoga studio because a huge cellular installation went in on the building directly across from it. Likewise, my favorite restaurant. The library has wireless, the coffee shop, the book store... many of my favorite places are off my favorite list now.

I avoid driving on the freeway whenever possible because of all the cell phone towers. I avoid walking near cell towers in the neighborhood. I am sending my daughter to my second choice pre-school, because my first choice had very high microwave radiation levels from a cellular antenna near the nursery and kindergarten playground.

I am terrified about the upcoming "smart-meter" installation in our neighborhood, and am trying to line up the finances to move outside of the city.

I am really scared that my child will not get to live a normal life because of the insane proliferation of cellular devices that no one seems to be aware are dangerous and harmful, especially to young people.

If you are interested in the subject, I suggest reading, Disconnect, by Devra Davies. And then do your research on the internet. Hundreds of sites are out there to help you find your way in this very weird world of invisible microwave radiation toxins in everyday life.

I cant walk on the floor barefooted and get into bed. If I walk around barefooted too long I get nausea and have to wash my feet. Crazy Right! I never put foil directly over food because its toxic. Eventually you build up mercury in your body. So, I have to put wax paper on first and then the foil on top of that. OH! wait, forgot I eat tuna all the time! Dangit! Sounds like a cleansing coming on. WooHoo!!!

I know totally lost it!

I won't eat High Fructose Corn Syrup or anything with partially hydrogenated oils. (not just 0gram trans fat - because if you eat more than one serving suddenly you have a gram of trans fat). No hydrolized protein (MSG).

We eat mostly organic, very little processed food. Drives my kids nuts.
But we use the microwave and our cell phones and have wireless....

My husband and I are VERY health minded, which is a good thing in light of the large number of people with cancer, diabetes, etc. "You are what you eat" is truly an indicator of health these days.
So, what do we do? We have one raw meal a day, we eat only organic grass feed/free ranging meat, we eat only organic vegetables and fruits, we do not use our microwave (don't faint yet), we drink purified alkaline water, we eat nothing out of boxes or cans (aside from my son's O's), we avoid all GMO products (corn and soy), we take multivitamins, fish oil and probiotics, we exercise daily, we make our own house cleaning and beauty products, we use no plastic storage containers for cooked foods, you use non chlorinated toilet paper, paper towels and tissues, and much, much more. It may sound extreme, but it has been a fun journey. A great book if you are learning to be more heath minded is: Do it Gorgeously and Better Basics for the Home, both of which give recipes for house cleaning, health products, beauty products, etc.

LOL @ microwaves... my daughter won tons of awards on her science fair project... microwaves are killing us ;) But I still use mine!!

My things are more OCD spun than anything, and more 'do's' than 'don'ts'. The volume on the tv or the numbers on the microwave can't be a multiple of 5 (or something bad will happen). I have to sleep with my silly little plastic rosary under my pillow (just started that one for some reason; I think it's linked to me trying to quit smoking). I have to push the bubbles down on to-go cups. You can't wear certain colors together (red/green, yellow/black, etc). These are my OCD ways of protecting my family ;) Kind of drives my husband nuts because he doesn't get it, but they don't hurt anyone else. This is the only part of my OCD that isn't being controlled, but like I said, it's not hurting anyone so I haven't tried to stop them yet ;) The multiple of 5's thing is the biggest. Oh, and all my clocks have to be exactly 6 minutes fast ;)

I'm a nut, I know ;)

I do all 4 of those things, plus we don't drink water out of plastic bottles unless we are out and about and there is no non-plastic alternative (we live in a hot climate so sometimes the water is more important than the container).

I also have gotten less stringent about sunscreen. I used to be hyper about it because we live in Southern California where we get tons of sun and I have fair skin. But then my best friend got breast cancer several years ago, and she shared with me that she had low vitamin D. Apparently low vitamin D is common in women with breast cancer, and there is an epidemic of low vitamin D in everybody. My friend was like me about sunscreen and hats. She thought it was ironic that she avoided the sun to avoid cancer, yet one of the contributing factors to her cancer was because she avoided the sun . Not only did I start taking vitamin D, I now let myself get natural rays, sans sunscreen. I still use sunscreen when we go out for long periods like for hiking, beach, etc, but I do not use it every day like I used to.

I do numbers 1, 2 and 4. Clearly I am going to get brain cancer.

I don't smoke for obvious reasons

I don't buy foods with BHT. (This one is hard!)

I buy organic whenever possible. (Or grass fed)

I force myself to eat things I don't really like because I know my body needs them.
