$0. There is nothing that would make me pay for overnight shipping short of being a life-saving medication delivery, or some other emergency scenario.
How close was your order to Christmas and how much did you pay for shipping?
I just ordered something for my friend's baby who was born last night. Its a personalized gift that is a guaranteed Christmas delivery and I just paid $72 in shipping.
If delivery companies are making that much to delivery a present on one day, I'm in the wrong business!
I didn't get taken.
I could afford it so it didn't bother me to pay that much shipping, and I love my friend who needed this item, personalized or not, so time and money wasn't an option.
Merry CHRISTmas ya'll!

Usually always free. Most I will pay is $10.00 and that is if I needed it quickly. $72 never in a million years would I pay that!
I'm too thrifty to pay that much. I think the most I spent is $16 on shipping and that was something that came from another country. I'm not trying to sound like a know it all, but I always plan ahead and look for free or economy shipping.
I wouldn't have a problem with telling people that their gift is on the way. Sometimes it's nice to get a gift after all the holiday craziness.
The most was $12 at edible arrangements. Other than that, I usually shop at amazon with free shipping. There is no way I'd pay $72 for shipping. Baby would be getting that gift after Christmas.
I ordered something yesterday and it will arrive Dec 24 with free express shipping. I had to sign up for a free one-month trial of Amazon Prime, which is $79 a year but you can cancel before you pay for the membership within the first month.
I would never do that.
There are, as the others said, lots of 'free shipping' opportunities.
The baby was born last night.
I am sure, the couple will know/realize that this is a very busy time of year.... for people. Many are not even home and are traveling now too.
So I don't think, the new parents would 'expect' any baby gifts, before Christmas. And they will be so busy themselves, once they get home from the hospital and adjust to having a baby and non-sleep, and probably too many visitors etc.
I couldn't track down something I thought I was sure I'd be able to yesterday. Well, not the color my daughter specified....I called EVERYwhere. So I did last minute amazon and had to pay about $25. I just bit the the bullet and did it. A student had just given me a $25 dollar Amazon gift card the day before and I figured it was meant to be.
I wish I was brave enough to do what Caren said, sign up for amazon prime, then cancel it! Kinda wish I'd been that savvy but I was too worried I would forget to cancel, get charged and have a big $hassle$ later when thats what I'm trying to avoid in the first place by ordering online.
I don't think I would ever pay $70something for shipping...I mean, unless the item was a large piece of furniture or something? Guess it's all relative. I'm really curious what the amazing gift was!!!!
Last year I spent $48 on shipping to Ireland for photo books. i about died. I learned my lesson and sent everything two weeks earlier this year ;-)
Wow! I love a lot of my friends dearly, but I would NEVER pay that much in shipping! I'd pay the regular shipping rate and that baby would get it's present after Christmas. Oh man. I feel like you were sort of taken advantage of. I doubt your friend will even notice that your gift arrives in time for Christmas - she's probably a little crazy right now. I know if I were your friend, and I found out you paid $72 in shipping, I would feel AWFUL!!! But maybe that's just me. Hopefully she'll just think you're a really fantastic friend!
I have never paid for shipping. The only way I will order online is if there is free shipping. I wouldn't have worried about having a gift in time for Xmas day.
When you get this close to Christmas, you're not only paying for the fast shipping; you're paying extra for the convenience.
I try to plan way ahead when I order, and that's one reason. (I understand that you couldn't plan a personalized gift well ahead for a newborn!) However, my DD, who lives in Alaska, called me about two weeks ago and asked me to order something particular for SIL. She wanted me to do the ordering so she could keep it a complete secret from her husband. So I went ahead and ordered it online - to be shipped to her address. When I got to the part about the shipping charges, there was only one shipping option - and the cost was almost as much as the item! (This was NON-fast shipping!) I called her back, and she said, "It's crazy, but it's the way it happens around here. Go ahead." Yikes!
Wow that is a lot for 1 gift BUT, it was ordered close to Christmas and I guess that is what you pay for the guarantee. I'd be angry is it is not there on the designated day!!
We used FedEx for all of our company shipments. I ship FedEx ground mostly. I sent 4 gifts out last Monday and spend $50 total.
The one thing I like is that we do ship to Houston quite often and if I get my package to FedEx before 4pm, my clients in Houston usually get the package the next day! That saves a lot of express $$
Best wishes and Merry Christmas!
