Hi K.- I'm a teacher also with a busy 5 year old genius! I always use palmers cocoa butter on her scars and mine also. It works wonderful. If the scar is stubborn, try liquid vitamin E. Good Luck.

My son recently had surgery on his eyelid. I'm looking for something to start putting on the incision to minimize his scar. Any suggestions?

My 5 year old daughter had to have her chin stitched up last year (5 stitches). We used Mederma (available without a prescription) a few times a day (it's a cream) and used sunblock daily on it. Her doc and also my dermatologist said using sunblock daily really helps to prevent discoloration. Now, a year later, I don't even see a scar. The location on his eyelid may make it a little more difficult because you don't want to irritate his eye. Good luck.
Vitamin E oil from Walmart has worked wonders on burns and other cuts here.....cheap, no pain, and works quick.
I have used vitamin e oil for my hysterectomy scar and a scar from minor surgery on my leg and you can hardly see either one. It was amazing. My hubby was shocked that you can hardly see the bikini line hyster scar.
The Dr. that did surgery on my leg did tell me to use vitamin e oil and he also stressed sunblock because the sun will darken the scar if it is on the face or exposed.
You can find this oil in the vitamin section of most any store for less than $5. I've heard that Merderma does work well, I never bought it because the e oil worked so well for me.
Good luck.
I work for a board certified plastic surgeon (www.DrMichaelBogdan.com).
Mederma is what he recommends to his patients. Vitamin E Oil is an alternative that is less expensive. Scars that are pink are still healing, so using sunscreen is also very important. The Mederma for kids should work fine:)
I hear bio-oil is great but I don't know about using it on the eyelid. Read the label and check with his doc just to be sure. But really I hear lots of good things about it.
Because it's his eye, I would be VERY careful about anything you put in the area. Speak to his doctor or an ophthalmologist about what is safe to use.
Hi K.,
My 15 month old had neurosurgery done on his back when he was 9 months old and when we brought him in for his first follow up (two weeks later) they suggested that I only use vitamin E oil on the incision area. At first the scar was really raised and red and I was horrified. However after using the vitamin E oil it has diminished in appearance significantly.
Ask your child's dr about Mederma. Definitely use sun tan lotion...it is exposure to the sun's UV light that cause scars to look really bad.
Hi!
My daughter got hit in the eye when she was 3, which cut her eyelid very badly. Because of the location, we were advised not to put anything on it, so we thought she would grow up with a scar. She just turned 17, and there is no noticable scar. As she grew, the scar just appeared smaller, and now is in the crease of the eyelid. Just a positive thought for you, in case you shouldn't put anything on it!
