Because it is not a verb, there is no actual spelling. The correct past tense would be "went/gone potty".
For the record, adding apostrophe and D--'d--never makes anything past tense. Never.
If my 3.5 yr old were talking and said "Mom! I potty'd!"
Is it:
1. pottied
2. pottyed
3. potty'd
4. pottyied
English experts help me out. Even spellcheck isn't picking this one up. But you and I both know that there is a past tense verb for using the potty. But what is it?
@ K's Mom: Ha. I agree that as long as they do it, who cares how it's spelled!
I guess so far, answers are "pottied" and "went potty" or "used the potty."
I knew it was slang, but as moms we make up so many words.
If "Googled" is an accepted word, why not "pottied?"
@ Laurie: HA! No I didn't see that movie. It was on our Netflix list, but then we just canceled. Hilarious.
And by the way, if my son were living with my mom, he'd be saying "I had a bowelmovement!" so I think I can handle the "Went potty." The reason I was asking is b/c every couple months I write a letter and send pics to the great-grandparents. The letter is always from my 3.5 yr old's POV. He was telling them about the first day he wore underwear out in public. "I pottied before we left home, I pottied when we got to the library, I pottied at the grocery store..... No accidents!" So I didn't know what to write when 'pottied' was underlined red in Word.
@ Jennifer: Funny you should say that about eating. I tell my son ALL the time. "Eat your fork!" or "Eat your spoon" which he doesn't even blink an eye "Oh mom wants me to eat the food on my fork" he must be thinking. But one time my 9 yr old neice started laughing "Eat your fork? What? YOu want him to eat his fork?"
Oh and yes - I could always say just "peed" or "pooped" or "urinated" or "deficated" etc. But all of those can be done in a diaper or on the floor or in the closet or in the bathtub or many other places. But "pottied" is done only in the potty. So I wanted one word that meant "Went potty" other than just using "went potty." So .... "went potty" was the phrase I was looking for.
Because it is not a verb, there is no actual spelling. The correct past tense would be "went/gone potty".

I would think potty is already pretty much a slang word that got used a lot and hit websters as a real word. I/he/she went potty would be the way to say it I suppose. Potty to me was always pee. Poop was always poop. I pooped in the potty, or I pee'd in the potty. Pee's being short for pissed. LOL. not much help am I?
if you're using "potty" as a verb, it would be pottied, like someone said, adding the "ed" changes the y to an ie. it's not coming up on spellcheck because technically it's not a verb...but i would say that as many people (and kiddos!) use it in their everyday speech that it's not a big deal lol. i think we always just say "went potty". but i would know what you meant if you said "pottied" too!
The rule for plural words is "change the y to i and add es" so...
Change the y to an i and add ed: pottied
If you're being correct about it, it's "I used the potty". The three-year old version isn't a real word.
...but it is cute! (not to mention great news!)
=D
Potty is a noun. Kid/motherese version of Pot. Short for chamber pot.
So the verb usage is "went", peed, pooped, excreted, etc.
I went to the potty
I peed in the potty
etc.
The kid/parent version "I went potty" or "Need to go potty" is missing the modifiers "to the".
SIMILAR to "You Got Mail" is sooooo wrong. It's You've got mail at worst, and you've gotten mail at best. It' NOT you got, or I got... It's you have or I have.
I dont care how its spelled,, Im just glad they finally do it. Id say its "pottied".
Mommy, I "went" in the potty. Potty is a small toilet; hence "potty trained" or "toilet-trained".
I'm no expert, but I'd say 1, pottied. But my auto correct on my phone just tried to change that to potted, so maybe not! Haha!!
Interesting question. None of my dictionaries have a verb allowance for the word "potty." They each mention the noun "potty" as a toilet or chamber pot.
I suppose this means than in the verb usage it is a slang word, therefore not subject to strict spelling rules. Please don't anyone jump on me for that assessment. It's just a guess.
But since when we drop the "y" to add the "ied" or "ies" to words, the correct spelling would be "pottied." Similarly, we would say we had two or more "potties" if we had plural potty chairs.
I was amused that this word wasn't included in the dictionary. I'll be interested in the opinions and findings of others.
None of the above look right. I would have to say it's not a word. To use it properly, would say "I went potty". Pretty sure the thing that would make it past tense is the word 'went' or 'used'.
My first instinct is "pottied." I trying looking it up online and found zip, so I'm sticking with it : )
Ever see the movie "Get him to the Greek"?
"I evacuated my bowels.. "
My kid says "I made a peepee/poopy"
Yeah, it's not actually a verb even though most moms use it as a verb. My husband really makes fun of me for two things that I often say. The first is some variation of using the word "potty" as a verb, and the second is asking our boys if they have finished eating. It usually comes out, "Are you all done apples?" He laughs because I do tend to be grammatically correct, but there are just certain phrases I use with our boys that aren't.
There is always the proper fallback, they urinated or defecated.
maybe its one of those wierd words that dont have a past tense....maybe its like "mom i DID POTTY?"then again you dont do potty. lol...i say eenie meenie miney POTTIED.....I before e except after c.....there would be no y because the ed takes the place of y...and there wouldnt be an ' because there's no second word....im banking with POTTIED.....sorry for taking you through my thought process
im gonna go with "pooped"
:0)
It's not a word. The words are urinated and defecated. Or casually - peed and pooped. DS says - mommy, I went to the bathroom. If I need more info, I ask.
It would be pottied. The rule is with a double consonant ending in y, you drop the y and add ied. However, I'm not sure if "pottied" is a word or not...but why shouldn't it be?
Further investigation suggests that potty isn't a verb. It's a noun, referring to a children's potty chair. One of those things we've turned into a verb...but still, to spell it would be pottied.
"Went to/on the potty" would be the correct way to say it, however.
Also, I'm also curious where you came up with potty'd. That would read out as "potty would" .... :)
