Getting older is not for sissies! Lol
It's normal that hair changes as we age.
And have you noticed the difference after pregnancy? Geez!
Hey ladies,
Just wondering...when you got into your 30s, did you notice that your hair was thinning out? I've always had this super thick, long, curly hair and over the last year I've been noticing that it doesn't seem as full as it once was. I don't see any bald spots or anything, but my ponytail used to be a big bushy beast, and now it looks like it's like half the size. (I'm not really complaining, I still have a lot of hair, but just an observation.)
I'm a vegetarian (and have been for almost 6 months now), but I eat a balanced diet and take vitamins. I kind of wonder if that's had an effect on me, but it seems like it's been going on longer than 6 months. Just wondering if you noticed the same thing about your hair...
Have a great weekend!
Hilary
EDIT: my daughter is 4.5 years old. Hopefully my hormones have evened out by now! :)
Thanks for the feedback, ladies! I went to the doctor and had a blood workup done and thankfully, everything seemed normal. Guess I'm just getting old. Thyroid and iron were fine and I eat plenty of protein. My thryroid was on the lower side of normal, so we're going to keep an eye on that though. Isn't aging the best?!

My hair falls out when I don't get enough iron and if you are a vegetarian you probably are not getting enough iron. You might need to go to the Dr. and get your lvls checked to see what needs to be done.
Good luck and God Bless!
Yep, getting older is not for the faint of heart.
When did you give birth to your last child? Many times women will lose a lot of hair after giving birth.. If it has been a long time, could just be a normal occur acne.
How do the older women on your moms side look? Do thy have thinning hair.. Did your great grand mother wear a wig? My mom has very thin and now patchy hair.
It is mostly hereditary.. No magic diet or pill will help. Do mention it to your doctor at your next appointment.
I do suggest you try to find some products that will help you keep what you have, because once it is gone, it does not come back..
I have tried all sorts of products, the only one that has worked for me is an AVEDA product called Invati... Yes, it is expensive, but instead of a dozen or more hairs coming out each morning.. I only have 1 or 2.. You only need to use it on your scalp..so do not use it to wash your whole length of your hair..
Yes. Everything goes after 30. LOL...or at least that is how I feel.
My sister lost a lot of hair same age when she was undiagnosed hypothyroid. It grew back thick again after she started meds. Anemia can also cause hair loss. If I were you I'd schedule a physical with your doc.
Yes, I noticed it on myself too, luckily I also have very thick hair. Around my hairline mostly is where I noticed it. I have bangs now because of it. My girlfriend who is our same age has also noticed it on herself. I fear one day I'll be like my grandma - short permed hair to maximize every strand. :(
I agree, that it is about trace minerals- especially since you have changed your diet. In fact, most of the illness' that I have read about on this comment page could be corrected, by just taking enough of the trace minerals that your body is lacking. Potassium, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, and Manganese, are all required for healthy optimal Woman. No matter what your age. All that any of us need to do is, take Organic Unsulphured Molasses everyday! Try it and see how your hair and nails will be like new, and shiny! If it is your Thyroid, it will stabilize it, and help you enrich your blood cells too! Hope you find results. I know I did!
My hair did not start to get "right" again after pregnancy until after I stopped with birth control - it really messed with my hair. It is a year later and still on the mend.
Try taking a kelp supplement. A vegetarian diet could absolutely cause thinning hair, but I am guessing it's hormones that are the culprit. The kelp will help with that!
Good luck! :)
That didn't happen to me when I hit my thirties. I don't think it's age related - I vote for hormones. Like when you have a kid and a ton of hair falls out! The good news is that, just like the post-partum hair loss, it's likely to come back.
vegetarianism will indeed have an effect on thyroid.
In fact, children need animal fats particularly because they cannot convert beta carotene (plant) to retinol. They can get retinol from animal fat. Who knows what else, but the b vitamins and iron are high in meats. It's awefuly hard to get in a bean what you need from meat. I know what they say about 'complete protien' obtainable from rice and beans, but I am not talking only about that. Enzymes, minerals, certain kinds of fats, you know......your body needs them. God gave them to you to keep your body fed and well.
Anemia can cause that. Have you had all of your levels checked recently? I take a Biotin supplement (5000 mcg) and that helps my hair line. Mine starting thinning along my hairline in my 40s. Luckily, I have a ton of hair so it's not very noticeable. But if I stop taking the Biotin, it thins again.
I have really thick hair too. I have noticed in my thirties (now in my forties) that it seemed to thin out more. It's still pretty thick. I did have some bald patches at the hairline around my temples but I think that was due more to being diagnosed with Graves Disease (hyperthyroidism) and pregnancies. Those bald patches have started to grow back in now. (I take synthroid daily to regulate my thyroid function and my kids are 3.5 and 5 now) I also used to have pretty oily skin and scalp. That too has subsided. My skin rarely breaks out anymore and now I can wash my hair and let it go for a day before washing again. That was unheard of before I hit 30!
You may want to call your doctor's office and ask them if it is just part of the normal aging process or if there is something else that could be causing it.
HTH,

How much protein are you getting? I know that if I don't eat enough protein my hair falls out. I am 41. I have been told by doctors that protein is essential to not losing hair.
I agree with Melissa K. below.. "hormones" When I hit my 30s... my hair did tend to thin.. Then when I hit perimenopause and with that first initial drop in Estrogen, more came out.. Although I have lots of hair, it sure AINT what it used to be.. :) :( the hair fallout as it were... has since slowed down.. thankfully.....
although, the collagen gods haven't helped matters either..
