K.S.
There are hair strengthening shampoos and foods you can eat like tuna fish. I lost hair after i hate my baby also.
I have very naturally curly hair, but it's thin. It's never been very thick...it's very fine.
I wash it every day, only a little shampoo but a lot of conditioner, otherwise it looks terrible and is unmanageable.
When I put it into a ponytail (very rarely), it's only about a dime size in diameter. :(
Then, today, a friend had a brilliant idea to straighten my hair (with a flat iron) which is something I used to do in my youth, but haven't done in a decade. When it was done, I just wanted to cry...my hair looked so thin and awful (and dry, not to mention) it was like I hardly hard any hair and it just hung really lifelessly. Really, really a sad moment...especially since I'm going grey to boot.
Totally off the subject, I am really just bummed over aging (32), struggling to lose extra baby weight (oh, but baby is almost three...still nursing, but doubt that has anything to do with it...), gray hair, thin hair, etc...just not a pretty picture anymore.
ANYhow, I'll stop rambling. Why might my hair be getting so thin? Is there something I can do to help? Anyone else have this problem? Anyone want to send a ray of sunshine my way?
Thanks, mamas.
Angie...I'll do you one better and curl up with a bowl of peanut butter, period...covered in chocolate syrup. :) Come on over and bring your M&M's!! ;)
Thanks, everyone, for your advice, sympathy and empathy. Feeling a bit better. :)
I don't know...I've had my thyroid tested several times in the past three years because I have other symptoms of hypothyroidism, but they say the results fall in the normal range. I'm beginning to suspect that normal "for me" is probably much higher and that it really is low, because besides the hair, my nails are also thin, I am usually sluggish despite eating right and getting exercise, and I do eat plenty of protein. Alternately, I sometimes wonder if three years of nursing is just taking it's toll. Oh well...good advice, everyone, will definitely try some things. Thanks again!

I would consider a few things:
1. Genetics....how was your families hair? Did it thin early?
2. Hormones? Do you have a lot of hormonal fluctuations or instability that would cause the thinning?
3. Possibly male-pattern baldness, which is genetics again, but not necessarily in your mother's generation.
4. Diet, meaning not enough protein.
5. Too much conditioner is actually not good and clogs the pores over time. I seldom put condition on my roots or close to the scalp. Only on the ends and about an inch down from my scalp.
6. Aveda has a new balding and thickening shampoo/conditioner that is receiving rave reviews. It's a 3 month process and pricey, like $100 but I would recommend looking into it.
7. Ask you doctor at your next appointment. Write it down in your calendar so you don't forget.
Sorry to hear about your sadness with your hair. I'm sure you have other beautiful features!!!
Have your thyroid checked out.
Thin brittle hair is a sign of hypothyroidism.
Are your nails slow growing and brittle too?
Are the outer edges of your eyebrows thinned out (without plucking)?
There was a problem with the supply of my thyroid medication a few years back and I ran out for awhile.
My hair thinned alarmingly - I was afraid I was going to go bald.
But as soon as I was back on my medication again, it grew back in (it took awhile).
I would stop washing it everyday....its very drying. My daughter has curly hair only it's thick (like thick thick). She washes every other day and wets and scrunches on the other day. We use pantene shampoo and conditioner and aussie 3 minute miracle once a week. Product can be drying as well, so we use a leave in conditioner (a good one from Sallies Beauty Supply) instead of mousse or gel.
My hair wasn't normal when i tried a vegetarian diet and went back to normal when i started upping the protein again...so maybe not enough protein, especially with little still nursing??
Getting old sucks haha. Im 38, greying as well and im "trying" to embrace it. And most days it's fine...some days its not. But i know i won't color them.
My baby is 15 months and i just can't kick myself into gear. Not much to add, just that im there with you :-)
Can't help with the hair, but oh my god, I wanted to hug you when you said you're struggling to lose baby weight & your kiddo is almost three.
My kiddo *is* three, ad I have yet to lose even a single ounce!!
And all anyone seems to talk about anymore is exercise and fitness and healthy eating ... which honestly makes me want to curl up witha giant bag of peanut butter m&ms and GROWL at the next person who talks to me.
Good luck with your hair - you're not alone with the weight !
B. Yes for me to all of your symptoms. I am on thyroid meds but need to up the dosage. Thanks
Have your thyroid checked.
p.s. -- Why let it go grey? Especially if your hair is thin, it should have some life and color. Use henna if you're afraid of frying it. Henna coats and nourishes it.
use ma in and tail yes it is for horses but it is safe to use on human hair too i use it it made my hair thicker
Have your thyroid checked
Celiac disease can also cause thinning/hair loss - Do you have any other synptoms?
definately talk to your doctor
i don't know but my aunt who has similar hair to mine (and yours, it sounds - lots of wave/curl, and somewhat fine). IS definitely going bald in the back. it's not bare but definitely skin showing through. she is almost 60 though.
i have noticed when i straighten my hair, it's similar to yours :( soooo depressing (i am 35). also i get this weird line, down the crown, like my part goes down way farther than it should in the back, just naturally, because there's less hair there :( i started noticing - then i asked my friends if my hair looks better curly or straight (i didn't think it was noticeable) and two of them said at the exact same time " oh CURLY, definitely." :( i was sad because straight hair is so much trendier and fashionable, and it makes my face look thinner. but i really looked after that, and they're right. when it's straight it looks limp and thin. boo hoo!!
i have started taking a Biotin supplement, i have heard that helps.
It may just be you.
I swear I've had my hormone levels checked and rechecked growing up be cause of my dark body hair. It bothered me so much growing up that "professionals" kept thinking something was wrong with me. I'm just fuzzy dang it!
I believe some women just have it in their genetics to have thinning hair at a certain age. Not fun, but nothing "wrong".
I've always had thick hair, but since my son's birth it's been falling out. Not sure how much more I can loose, my ponytail is already so tiny. It sucks.
Perhaps you can go to a hair dresser, talk to them about a style that will give you a boost. Who knows, some women can totally rock a pixy cut, you may be one. Even Jamie Lee Curtis refuses to dye her hair and she is totally rocking the "silver".
Good luck.
Get your Vitamin D checked. Back when I used to spend 12 hours+ daily in the office my hair thinned out big time. I cringe to look back at pictures of myself when I was in my mid-30s. Now I make sure to get some daylight every day (though mindful of skin cancer, of course). My doctor also had to put me on prescription supplements for a while. My hair will never be thick like it was in my teens and twenties, but it is soooo much better. I don't have to hide if someone pulls out a camera.
Stress is also a big factor to consider. If there is a lot of stress in your life right now, try to find a way to defuse it if possible. That will also take a toll on your hair.
Best of luck - I know how it feels.
It might be to do with the nursing. I lost a ton of hair after I had each of my kids, and it never grew back until I stopped nursing.
I, like you, have very fine and thin curly hair. I am 37 and have been straightening and highlighting since I was about 20. Apparently, I have always had a lot of it though, according to my hair stylists. I will never have one of those ropes for a pony tail, neither of my parents have super thick hair, it's just not happening for me. I used nioxin a few years back. Don't try that. It just dried my hair out. After a shower, I couldn't hardly comb through. Then my stylist confirmed that it is very drying and NOT good for my hair type or color. She recently recommended the new Aveda line. Not cheap but she said I could be really stingy with it and get 6 months out of the product. I believe she said to buy the serum first, if I cannot afford all 3 products at once. The serum is the most expensive item tho.
So, I experienced something similar to you when my daughter was about 2. I weaned her around the age of 2 and for 2 years after that, I looked horrible. My hair was thin, I was experiencing acne (worse than I did as a teen). Seriously, my mom always said when I was older I wouldn't have pimples anymore. She was wrong!! I also had this belly fat and had an abnormal level of anxiety that I had never experienced before. I had blood tests done. Everything was normal. I even went as far as to try Lexapro. Loved it, by the way, but I noticed after 8 months that I had gained about 7 lbs, all in the stomach, and no sex drive. I got off of it, which was a difficult process, I might add! My point: after living this way for 2 yrs or more, it all just went away. I still suffer from a little anxiety, but not like I was. My skin cleared up too. As for my hair, it still seems thinner than it did in my 20's but I feel like it has improved some. Don't waste your money on nioxin. Go straight for the Aveda. Be sure you are taking supplements. Biotin on top of that, is not a bad idea. Do not use shampoo very often. Try rinsing your hair, massaging your scalp and conditioning. Comb out with a wide comb in the shower while the conditioner is in your hair. Another thin I have tried recently is to put warm olive oil in your dry hair. I didn't go crazy at the root because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to wash it out well. Let it sit in your hair for 30 min and then wash. I liked the results!! You will have to do it frequently though. By my 3rd washed of the week, I could tell I needed to do it again. So, I think age and hormones are having an effect on us!!!! You are not alone and it stinks! I am even considering some inexpensive hair extensions. I don't know if you can find someone in your area who does this but I know there are these "panels of hair" available. Need about 4 of them and have them moved up about every 3 months for $25. I think the initial charge was abt $150, maybe. Never done it but a friend has, she looks great! Call me vein but I'm just not ready for this aging business. I do think it's age and hormone changes. My girlfriend is complaining of hair changes too; she is 33 yo but started with about 12x the amount of hair than I have. This is life. :)
Could your nursing baby be sucking up all your nutrition?
I think it has a LOT to do with nursing! I had the same problem when I was nursing. I almost became obsessed with it. Now that I have been done nursing for about 6 months, I don't even notice it anymore. I also lost about 20lbs AFTER I stopped nursing. (Of course I gained about 10 back over the holidays that I haven't been able to get rid of). But I seriously believe both of these things are related to nursing. For me anyways.
Also, I stopped using Pantene products, after seeing a lot of things online that said they led to thinning hair.
