What Happens After a Developmental Screening?

I took my 2 1/2 year old to have an early childhood developmental/hearing screening. He failed the hearing screening and scored very poorly on the developmental screening and I'm not sure what comes next. I know that the state ed. department will be sending an SLP once a week to work with him and keeping tabs on his progress. But what am I supposed to do now? Should I take him to his regular pediatrician? I'm just really confused about what happens next and would like some advice from people who have been through it.

My son received assessments and speech therapy from our local community ECD organization. (it was not through a school).

After the assessment, they get the results, then in person, will go over it with you. THEN they recommend what is needed in terms of speech therapy (in my son's case), then they/you decide on how often he should have his sessions... and then YOU decide if you want to go ahead with it. If you do not want to, then you are turning down their services. OR if at a later time, you want to have services, they can do so.
At anytime, you can start or stop... services.
At least that is how it was per our ECD organization.
It is totally voluntary.
And it is very helpful.
My son, LOVED LOVED LOVED his speech therapy and his Speech Therapist.

I... did NOT have to get a recommendation from our Pediatrician... they sent the paperwork/assessments to the Pediatrician... and then I told our Pediatrician that I was getting speech therapy for my son.

In my case with my son, the ECD program is only for kids up until 3 years old only. And it is free.... until then.

all the best,
Susan

Was this through the school district? If not, you should be entitled to
services through the school. The school system should be able to
walk you through the process.

What should happen is after the testing, they should sit down with you
and explain the results. They will then recommend services to you,
be it speech, occupational therapy etc. Together you come up with a
plan and embark on it. Then there are regular meetings to discuss
progress etc. My recommendation is to make sure you always have
someone with you at these meetings. It is good to have another set of
ears, because it is a lot to take in. Good luck.

Call the agency and ask them. It really isn't a big deal that needs you to do anything as far as I know. They should have a goal/plan/implementation meeting to decide what goals they are going to work on and how they are planning on reaching their goals.

By the way, school districts don't help kids under the age of three. The kids under three usually get aid from a different type of agency, like Sooner Start in Oklahoma. After they turn three the school usually steps in and they start school in a pre-pre-k type class. It is often from 8:30am to 2:30 pm, shorter than a full day of school but long enough that they get lots of special attention and their different types of aides, speech, physical therapists, etc...can come to the school and work with them and not have to invade your home and privacy anymore unless you want them too.

Where do you live? If in Little Rock or surrounding area, there is an excellent school for kids with developmental delays or any kind of impairment for that matter. The have OT, Speech, Spec. Ed, and PT on staff and they make a plan for your child and then they coordinate the therapy in their day. Its kinda like they get therapy all day. Also if you live in AR, look at appying for TEFRA. Its state financial help to help children get the therapy they need. It is not based on how much you make, just on what kind of therapy or help your baby needs.

3rd attemt at answering. make a big issue out of any attempt to repeat you. get him to an ent. dont expect major increases in improvement celebratethe minor ones with him. if he attempts to copyyou cheer and clap and say the word back to him. you should have gotten my private email add that to this. mine is hard of hearing. he is on his second roundof antibiotics for it. his tube has fallen out. since we have started the antibiotics he has went from single words to 3 word combinations a huge improvement for a hard of hearingkid.

look at him sign and say the word loudly at the same time and trust me occasionally you will forget he cant hear :) this will pass in time. expect fustration tantrums. dont punish them. listen to the way he repeats you it wont come out right but put the partial word to the real word he will have his own language so to speak. the development screeningis low due to the hearing loss that will also improve in time. I suggest signing time insteadof baby signs it keeps their attention better ask eci for signing sheets and they should sign while working with him.

check out aslsignlanguage.com and check out wrightslaw.com these are a huge help I get all of my signs from the asl site and wrights law has nonprofit people in your area that can help. most of yours will probably be in tulsa if he is still behind or the hearing issue cant be fixed they will put him in a special preschool at the age of 3 through the state for kids with learning disabilities. which is what he has due to the hearing loss. trust me when you start with working with the ears you will see an improvement and his developmental milestones will take care of themselves.

whats cool is with a hard of hearing kid when they learn a new word they say that word over and over for weeks. mine is on a "go" kick and a "ow" kick right now. the reason why is eci taught him go and he heard his brother say ow. so these are his 2 new words i hear all day for the last week or so. even copying roaring from a lion or barking from a dog make an issue out of it tell him very good cheer and say thats my big boy. him seeing your excitement will make him try harder. reward all words said right or wrong. reward any attempt till the speech therapist can make progress with him.

dont panic i did at first. remeber to tap him on the head to get his attention or pull on his harness or spray him with a water bottle. get the safety signs first to keep him safe i use stay with mom and dont touch all the time. and then work on the others. dont teach more than 5 a day. mine wont sign eat or drink but he will bring me a can of somekind of food if he is hungry and his tippy. he whines since he cant say or sign eat or drink. . mine has an elmo harness never leave the house without it. because if he gets in front of a car and you hollar he wont hear you. pm me with any questions or if you want to celebrate small milestones that are huge to us. trustme I will understand.
