What Do You Do with Unwanted Carseats?

I have carseats that I no longer need and no one to pass them on to. I believe that consignment shops/Goodwill/charities etc. will not take them due to potential safety issues. Should I simply throw them out, or can they be recylced?

What can I do next?

If I were you I would try contacting a local woman's shelter. I know the ones in my area are either Woman's Space of The Children's Home Society. I have never given them carseats, but I have donated lots of outgrown baby stuff.

You've gotten some good ideas...another is to join a Yahoo group call Freecycle and post a message for it. All items on Freecycle are free (and keeps lots of stuff out of landfills!).

There is a great place called cradles to crayons that accepts car seats & all gently used toys & clothing. They are a distribution warehouse called the Giving Factory that works with 115 different agencies in the area. Volunteers at this warehouse package clothing & other items and they are given to people in need through the agencies. Car seats, boppies & pack-n-plays are their top 10 requested items. Check out www.cradlestocrayons.org for more information. They are located off of Blair Mill Road in Horsham. They've been in existence for over a year. I made a donation of items and they were very nice and gave me a personal tour of the warehouse. I am very hooked. It is a great way to help people in need. It may be a hike to get there, but it is well worth saving the items up and making a donation.

hi,
you might want to try freecycle. you put items on there you want to get rid of for free, and people pick them up at your house. it's awesome- much better than throwing things away, nd you can find great stuff for yourself as well. you can try these webistes: http://www.phillyfreecycle.org/ or www.nwphillyfreecycle.org/

Some women's shelters will accept donations of baby/child things that other donation places will not accept. For example, A Women's Place in Doylestown which helps women and children who have been affected by domestic violence. These women often have to leave home with nothing more than the clothes on their backs, so they are in need of the items.

You might want to post them on craigslist. Some charities or womens shelters might accept them .

I have had yard sales and sold all of my baby stuff even my car seats. As long as they are in good shape and that they are NOT involved in any type of accidents. People are always buying baby things that are in good shape at yard sales.

I would also sugest the Freecycle Yahoo group. I've used it to get rid of a LOT of things that are too good to throw away. You post an OFFER and people respond to you if they want it. They come and pick it up at a location you give them. It is painless and quick.
