Do you think of 17 weeks pregnant as 4 months 1 week or would you say "I am almost 5 months pregnant"?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I will admit I am being EXTREMELY petty. :) My SIL got into a tiff over how far along she is. I know, pretty ridiculous and I should have just let it be - but she keeps telling people she is further along than she is in hopes of going into labor early. This is her first child. I didn't continue arguing over it with her, but just wanted to see what you all thought. Thanks ! (Again - yes I do realize I am being petty over it :) thanks!)

I would say I am X weeks until about the third month then go by months and at 17 weeks I would say I'm about 5 months.

I just say 17 weeks. If people can't do their own math and look at me blankly I'll tell them "a little over months". Or you can get into the 9-month 10-month debate plus the added two weeks of pregnancy (where doctors add the two weeks before conception) deal, until the person's looks like they wished they'd never asked you! ;) That's always fun! :)

Remember that if pregnancy is really 40 weeks, then 20 weeks is sort of like 4.5 months, so 17 weeks is even a little shy of 4 months. It's so confusing, but it's better not to think of yourself as further along in your pregnancy than you are. Otherwise, you end up miserable in the later months. The doctor will tell you at 20 weeks, "Congratulations, you're half-way there!" and you'll think... uh, oh, I thought I was more than half-way there..." You sort of half to relive those two weeks and pregnancy is long enough already!

My first pregnancy I would've said "17 weeks 2 days and 4 hours"

My second pregnancy I would've said "just over 4 months"

This, my third pregnancy, I would say "I'm due May 13...you do the math"

LOL!

40 weeks is 40 weeks, and she could go into full-term labor anywhere from 37-42 weeks. Whether she wants to think she's 4 or 5 months along is up to her.

I personally would have only said I was 4 months at that point. Or the easier thing is to just tell people your due date and let them do their own math. :-)

You are in your 5th month.

1-4 weeks 1 month
5-8 weeks 2nd month
9-12 weeks 3rd month
13-16 weeks 4th month
17-20 weeks 5th month
21-24 weeks 6th month
25-28 weeks 7th month
29-32 weeks 8th month
33-36 is 9th month
37-40 is 10th month

Technically you are pregnant for 10 months. THis is also the way the "What to expect when you are expecting" book breaks out the weeks.

Haha! I think pregnancy hormones must have seized control of your sis in laws brain! :) She will find out soon enough that you can't make a baby come out sooner by adjusting your due date!

I wouldn't say you were being petty. I would probably have to roll my eyes every few seconds every time she said it.

My husband and I used to try to figure this out all the time! Your doctor starts "counting" based on the date of your last period, but you're really not "pregnant" then. Then you add to the fact that you are really pregnant for 10 months, not 9 (40 weeks is full-term)... the numbers are all arbitrary anway! In fact, my friend's husband thinks that doctors should give you a 2 week range for delivery b/c the date is totally arbitrary!

I didn't get too specific, but at 17 weeks I would say 4 1/2 months or 4 months. It's kind of (to me) like being a little kid who says he is "almost 5", when he's really closer to 4!

It depends on what you go by...
http://members.cox.net/david.kutzler/CalculateEGA.htm

That web site converts weeks into months for you. 17 weeks is actually 3.8 months according to this. When you count a month as only 4 weeks you get an inaccurate result in your calculations.

If you go by the 4 weeks = 1 month rule then yes, 17 weeks is the first week of the 5th month (but you cannot say you are 5 months pregnant until you are 20 weeks along).. right now you are 4 months pregnant.

However, not all months are exactly 4 weeks long.. they are usually longer than that. So according to pregnancy books, the 5th month does not start until week 18 and ends at week 22.

It's actually 4 months, or a little shy of it. Months have more than 4 weeks in them. I counted from Jan 1 and at 17 weeks, it would still be 2 days shy of 4 months.
