What Did You Do with Your Old Maternity Clothes and Clothes Baby Outgrows?

I can't decide if I should donate it, bother with eBay and know I don't want to have another garage sale (clothes are such a hassle). What did you do with your old maternity clothes? What about all the clothes your kids outgrow?

So What Happened?

I gave several bags away to friends who could use them.

The rest I donated to a women and children's shelter. They have a resale shop, education programs and let moms in need take clothes for themselves and their babies. Plus we get the tax write off!

I am happy that my items are going to people who can use them. I felt like Salvation Army and Goodwill didn't need maternity and baby stuff as much as this group.

Thanks all for your suggestions.

I gave maternity clothing to friends to wear. If it is in excellent shape, ebay or craigslist as a bunch togehter (unless it's designer stuff, in which case you might want to list separately). Kids clothing was donated if it was in not-great shape, or gifted to friends as hand-me-downs if it was in good shape. Hand-knit sweaters and extremely cute things were kept.

Take them to Once upon a Child, they'll pay for them. Or Clothes Mentor for the Maternity clothes.

There's a great pregnancy crisis center in Palatine that would probably accept the maternity clothes and their baby closet shop would probably take your baby clothes (to give to their clients).

It's called PHD (they're on Plum Grove Rd, just before the tracks at Palatine Rd). PH# is ###-###-####. I've only spoken with Yvonne (volunteer coordinator), but I'm not sure if that's who you'd speak with. Their website has all their info, but they are a really great place for women and children to get help during pregnancy and after. Their baby closet is available only to their counseled clients and it offers baby items and foods for free. The also have a resale shop (PHD Resale, in the same plaza as Eurofresh in palatine) that may accept the maternity clothes; otherwise, they may just hold the maternity clothes to assist their pregnant clients.

Sorry to babble on. Great local non-profit. Can't say enough good things about them.

My sister & I sell outgrown clothes & toys at a local semi-annual consignment sale called Kids Market. Find a similar sale in your area. It's like having a HUGE indoor yard sale, but all you have to do is price your items, drop them off, and pick up a check after the sale!

With our sale, you can choose to donate your unsold items at the end of the sale. That way you can sell what you can, but then not have to deal with anything but a check afterward!

I suggest Ebay. I have gotten rid of so many things on Ebay including all of my daughters old clothes, toys etc. If you don't want to have to ship things, do a local pickup. I've done that with toys and its worked out well. By doing this, I've been able to purchase new clothes & toys for my daughter and get something back on all of the things I've bought.

Try a site called GumdropSwap (http://gumdropswap.com). You can swap from anywhere in the US by sending the clothes your kids outgrow to this kids boutique in CT. They take maternity clothes too. It's instant gratification instead of waiting for an annual event like"Mommy and Me". As long your things are in good condition they don't turn down anything because of brand, size or season. They take everything unlike resale store like Once Upon a Child! They give you points to shop on the website and send the clothes that fit your kids. It's great if you don't have time, patience or know how to do consignment, Ebay, craigslist, tag sale, etc.

I sell everything at the Mothers and More resale. The sales are held at the DuPage County Fairgrounds and the next sale is the weekend of March 12th. You set the prices and get 70% of all your sales.

You can get info at www.dupagemothersandmore.org or you can email me with any questions.

Good luck,

I post most of my items on craigslist.org. It is much easier than having a garage sale. You can post individual items/outfits, or you can post bundles of items. You name the price, you don't have to worry about shipping like ebay. You have the option to post pictures. I have also done ebay. Ebay is nice, but you have to pay shipping, and since it's a bidding war, you don't really know if you'll actually make money--You may end up selling 4 outfits for $1.00!! Although, kids clothes are a big hit on ebay!

If you don't have anyone to give them too (my sis-in-law blessed me with a bunch of maternity clothes and clothes her kids outgrew), you can call Salvation Army to donate them. They will come to your home and pick them up for you! Doesn't get much easier than that!

My daughters clothes go to the consignment shop where I get 40% of the sale price.
I sold my maternity clothes on ebay. I would suggest listing them in lots, it'll save you the hassle of shipping lots of items. I separated my clothes into 6 lots; GUC, FUC, EUC, NWT and NWOT.
What wouldn't sell on ebay I gave away to a momma on freecycle.

You could donate both to a crisis pregnancy center, like www.Womens-Center.org . They maintain a closet of clothes for expectant mothers to take from for themselves and for their babies.
