What Can I Do with Her Hair?

I know this is a crazy question. I hate to ask, because I feel it stereotypes my daughter, but I don't know what to do with her hair. My daughter is 20 months old and is mixed (black and white). She has very curly hair. Most days, I just leave it, but when i brush, it looks like a fro. It's not long in the back, only neck length, but the top and sides are long. Other than a fro, pony tail, or clips, I just don't know what else to do. She screams when I brush it, pull`it back, or anything. I guess the texture is more like mine/white people hair (SORRY about the stereotype). I would love to get it braided, but don't know that I could let her sit there that long. I would love some suggestions, and especially if anyone knows hair care products, that would be great. Thanks

What can I do next?

Hello,

Go to Wal-Mart and go to the Hair products department and look for Johnson's (NO MORE TANGLES). You can use it on DRY or WET hair. I bought this for my children so that i can use it in their hair and now my husband uses it as well and it smell nice. It is nice and gental on the hair but it still gets the job done. It only cost a few dollars.

Here it is on a web site for Walgreens so that you can see what it looks like. I do buy ours at Wal-Mart because they cost less.

i AM A LICENSED ESTHETICIAN AND HAVE SOME HAIR CARE KNOWLEDGE I'M NO EXPERT BUT MY ADVICE WOULD BE TO NOT BRUSH IT BUT USE A PICK INSTEAD A HAIR BRUSH IS CURLY HAIRS ENEMY, AS FAR A PRODUCTS GO TRY A LEAVE CONDITIONER TO RELAX THE CURLS A LITTLE AS FAR A STYLED GO YOU ARE KIND OF STUCK WITH PIGTAILS AND PONYTAILS UNTIL SHE WILL SIT STILL, OR YOU COULD DO HEADBANDS THE TYPE THAT GO AROUND FULLY WORK BEST FOR LITTLE FIDDLERS. GOOD LUCK LET US KNOW HOW THINGS TURN OUT

I'm not sure about the kinky hair but mine's naturally curly and I've also been very tender-headed since I was a kid. A couple things you could do is either use Johnsons & Johson's No More Tangles spray on her hair. I hear that works good. I personally make sure that after I shampoo my hair to rinse it in semi-cold water, then condition it. The conditioner will help you with the tangle ALOT. I can tell such a big difference when I forget to condition. Also, I think with kinky hair, you're supposed to use a pick more than a brush but when I was a child my mother bought me a Lady Catherine hairbrush. It is SO MUCH MORE gentler than the other hairbrushes you buy in the stores. I looked these up about a year ago for a friend of mine's daughter who's also tender-headed and I could only find them being sold on the internet and they're a little more expensive than a regular brush at Wal-Mart but they are so worth it!!! I wouldn't give anything for mine and I still have the same one today so they're long-lasting too! Mine has an ebony color handle to it with "Lady Catherine" on the handle. Hope this helps!

If you're looking for something that won't leave the hair oily or gunky try Chi Organics Olive Oil Therapy. I've tried many products on my daughters hair. Chi Organics is awesome. It leaves her hair baby soft and very managable. I don't have to use detanglers and she doesn't cry when I style her hair anymore.

Hi R.-

I have a 15 month old little girl who is also mixed. I'm white as well. I have been using Luster's Pink Oil Moisturizer on her since she was 4 months old. Her hair gets very matted in the back. This is more like a lotion than an oil. It helps keep her hair soft and curly without the frizz. My mother-in-law was the one who suggested it. My daughter's hair is my texture as well but also very curly. Both my husband and I have curly hair. I have also thought about starting to use a child friendly conditioner and/or detangler. Hope this helps in anyway.
