I have 2 kids and with both pregnancies I was very sick for the first 4 to 5 months. So I was just wondering if there is anything you lucky women did early on in pregnancy that you think helped you to not be sick at all? I know all the things to do once you have morning or all day sickness (as I like to call it) but I want to know about you girls that never have ANY sickness. Were you just that lucky or do you think you did something to keep away the nausea? Thanks
Thanks so much for all your input.....although I think pretty much every single one of you said you were just lucky. LOL I am planning on getting pregnant with our 3 in about a month and I'm just not looking forward to all that sickness that I had with my first 2 pregnancies. But I will just keep my hopes up and maybe, just maybe I won't get sick this time. A girl can dream can't she? LOL

I think it's luck of the draw. My mom wasn't sick a day, but I was desperately sick with #s 1 and 3 and nauseated with #2. I have a friend who has to be on medicine her entire pregnancies, and she's otherwise very healthy, and health conscience. I have another friend who was very sick with #1, had a breeze pregnancy, and then was desperately sick with #3. She says it was luck of the draw, too. Ginger suckers did help me, as did ginger ale (the kind with ginger). Otherwise, it was just a matter of keeping a food diet and living according to it. I hope you find an answer! :)

I didn't throw up once while I was pregnant. I did get nauseous if I didn't eat or drink anything for a long period of time. Maybe I was just lucky, but I found that if I ate and drank little bits throughout the day I was fine. Even if it was just crackers and some ginger ale.

Hi Andrea,
well I have 3 children, and I never had an issue with morning sickness. Honestly, that was always a mystery to me, because women complained of this often, but I never experienced it. But, I did have ridiculous cravings:).

I got nauseaus but never throwed up because i followed an old sailor's (yes, a fisherman) advice: as soon as you get nauseaus EAT. I know it seems crazy but if the stomach is moving around (or turning upside down) you need a small portion of dry food, such as crackers or bread, with NO BEVERAGES. These foods absorb all the liquids in your stomach that are making you feeling queasy and offer stability to the upset stomach. Obviously this is only for healthy stomachs (pregnant women or if you are sailing and the ocean is wild) NOT for people who have, for example, food poisoning and should definitely throw up to get rid of the food that caused it!!!! Also, I heard in the hospital that to avoid throwing up you should put on your stomach a bag of frozen food (peas, chicken nuggets, whatever really) and the cold helps stop the process of throwing up. This old doula told me that she did this to a woman who was giving birth through c-section and while she was open she felt like she was ready to "give out". The doula put a bag of ice on the upper stomach and the woman stopped feeling bad. I tried this a couple of times and totally works for me when my stomach is upset!!!

I never had it and am *very* grateful. One thing that may help is that I went to a good accupuncturist that focused on getting your body in balance. Once your body is balanced, then you have fewer health problems of any kind. She was absolutely worth every penny I spent. However, I think accupuncurists vary as with all things. Look for someone who has a good understanding of the overall concepts of Chinese medecine and is willing to help teach you about yourself.

I am one of those lucky ones. I think what helps me is that except for Tuesdays and Thursdays, I don't have anything to do. So I will sleep till noon, stay in bed or on the couch while on my lap top till bedtime, then go back to sleep. On Tuesdays and Thursdays when I have to wake up early and be active the entire day, I do tend to get a little nauseous.
So if there is a day where you can just stay in bed and not do anything at all (Hard to do with 2 kids, I know), see if that helps.

Hi ! I never got sick with my son and never experienced any nausea. I am pregnant now again at 6 weeks and no nausea again so far. In fact I am soooooo hungry.!!! : ) The only thing is I don't normally have 3 big meals. I am a big snacker and eat several small meals a day. It's almost like I'm constantly eating. I have always been like this. I exercise regularly as well.
Good luck!!
I hope you feel better soon : )

I am 21 weeks pregnant with my second child and my first son is 14 months old. Thankfully, and suprisingly, I have never had any morning sickness with either pregnancy. The only time I have felt a little sick is if I go too long without eating.... My sister's in law all had HORRIBLE morning sickness, so needless to say, that's what I was anticipating and was extremely suprised not to have any.
Both pregnancies I have used the CitraNatal vitamins, and I have no idea if that's what's helped....

I didn't have a bit of morning sickness... but I was instead essentially on bedrest for 7 months (aka, my docs didn't bring me in the hospital, but were always on standby to... the most exercise I did was walking from my car to their office... and that ticked them off... they wanted me escorted by wheelchair), and gained 180 lbs, and had pregnancy induced cancer.
Honestly though... I hate throwing up and being nauseous so much... if given the choice between my miserable life threatening preg & being morning sick... it would be a hard choice. Yeah. I hate throwing up that much.
Two things I DID do, are just habit... but they're reccomended as anti-nausea things: I eat a lot of japanese pickled ginger. The kind you find in Sushi restaurants... and I drank a coke every morning as soon as I woke up (adhd).

Yup, me! Never even so much as being sensitive to smells. I just felt great!
I did exercise regularly (nothing fancy just going for 3 mile walks around a lake about 3 times a week).
I never took prenatals, just a B6/B12/Folic Acid supplement, and my midwife though it might be the B6 that was helping me not having any nausea.
Who knows... I think it just depends on your body and the pregnancy.
My sister had 4 kids and she only ever got sick with her last pregnancy.

I got sick ONCE when I was pregnant with my first. It was cause I drank orange juice. LOL... made me sick as heck for about an hour! Other than that I never got sick with pregnancy number 1... I would have a bag of saltine crackers and a water bottle by my bedside and before I got out of bed in the morning I would eat a few of those and drink some water. Stayed in bed awake for about half an hour and then got up... feeling fine! :) I wasnt so lucky when I got pregnant with my son. When I was pregnant with him I got sick for the first 3-4 months. I didnt try the crackers with pregnancy #2 cause when I was pregnant with the first child I did however get close to having toxemia, almost put on bed rest. They cut me off of salt and I havent really eaten much of it since! I bet saltines with lower salt would still work! Good luck!

I honestly think it was just the luck of the draw. I was moderately ill with my first (my only girl) and less with number 2. Very little with the third. I've heard things like "your body gets used to it" or "you're more(/less) sick with girls" but I think these are just old wives tales.
Only thing I can think of as different was I was more active and healthy before getting preggo with #2. But not quite so much with #3, so there may not be any connection.

In my first pregnant I had mild morning sickness for three months...it was hard because I was waitressing in a restaurant and all the food smells drove me pretty nuts. The second time around, I had basically NO morning sickness whatsoever. Only one time when I didn't eat all morning and it was like 2:30pm and I started getting nauseous. My second pregnancy I also wasn't tired in my first trimester either, which was another huge difference from the first. I Think it is because of the vitamins I take... they are AWESOME! I get them from Melaleuca.

I never had morning sickness throughout either of my pregnancies. One thing I made sure I did was not eat spicy foods, that even included ranch and garlic bread. I noticed if I ate even a little bit of a spicy food or very flavorful food that lingers in my mouth, I felt heartburn for a little bit, so I cut them out completely and never had any problems.

With my first pregnancy, I was not sick very much at all. Sometimes when I smelled meat cooking in the evening but that was about it. In my second, I was sick at the beginning, but used my Herbalife shakes and they worked WONDERS!!! I could get the nutrition I needed without chewing and without smelling anything cooking. After the first sip I felt instantly better. My step son's mom was very anti Herbalife and I gave her some samples when she was sick during pregnancy. She bought a cannister later that day. She is not my biggest fan and if that doesn't tell you how great it works, I don't know what would!! I have samples if you want to give it a try.

I don't think there is anything you can do to change the behavior of your body when pregnant. I have had three and one on the way, I was not sick at all with the first one, sick a tiny bit with the second one, sick all day and night for 7 months with the 3rd one, and sick off and on with this one. I have no idea what triggers it, it's just different for everyone and every pregnancy.

Sorry, I was another lucky one. I didn't get any morning (or evening) sickness. I didn't do anything special, just didn't happen. I did, however, get some food aversions. With my first, it was Mrs. Field's cookies. Made me very sad because I worked with a woman whose boyfriend would send her some every couple of weeks-enough for the office. I did get a little nauseous just looking at them. With my second, it was the fish department at the grocery store. She's 3 1/2 now & I still can't go into that area without my stomach rolling a little.
I'm sorry things weren't so good for you.

I've heard all kinds of theories about this. I didn't get morning sickness either. Every morning I ate this hot seven grain cereal that didn't have wheat in it. I heard something that we eat too much wheat in this country so I tried to cut back. I didn't eat any snack food, candy or soda. Only healthy food and nothing processed. I don't normally eat like that. But I can tell you that I never felt better in my whole life as I did when I was pregnant. I thought maybe the super healthy diet had something to do with it.

Um...no...I've barfed in five different countries during a single pregnancy. Swedish train attendants were the nicest about it...Air France flight attendants were the nastiest. Seriously, just give me a bigger bag to barf in and I won't mess up your plane.
Mine was much more about MOTION sickness while pregnant...weird. Planes, trains, automobiles...you name it I would get sick on it.
The usual tricks about constantly snacking helped keep my blood sugar even and SOUR really worked for me. The first thing I would ask for on the plane was a several slices of lemon or lime. The smell would help and then I would just bite down on them through take-off and landing with some sips of water.

No, I was sick from about 5 weeks until the day they came out!!! The only thing that helped was diclectin... I am in Canada, I don't think its approved in the US yet. But essentially it is 1/2 a unisom tab and a vit B 6 before bed, worked like a charm and not harmful to baby. I had my last baby in the US while going to university and thats what I used while I was there as I could not get the prescription for it. Every time I tried to go off of them I was up vomiting the next day.. Nasty hormones...

Oh, and I okayed it with my OB first. He said they used to make a pill that was essentially the two of those combined, but they stopped marketing it because it was only good for morning sickness and not enough pregnant ladies were interested. Four of my family members have used this combo, too and it works wonders!

I was fortunate to not have any issues with nausea or morning sickness through either of my pregnancies.
I was just lucky. I didn't do anything to intentionally try to keep it away. Neither of my sisters have had issues with their pregnancies either (one has 3, the other is pregnant with #2)
But, it's relative - I'd rather have dealt with nausea than a major diagnosis after the birth of my second (hindsight being 20/20).

I learned that I needed a snack between lunch and dinner in order to not feel nauseous. After I started eating some crackers or some protein and taking a short break off my feet, I started feeling much better.

I had IVF so it was easy to plan when we would get pregnant. However, I had a Meyer's Cocktail (Intravenous vitamin therapy, heavy B vitamins, you can google it) every week for 6 weeks before getting pregnant to try to head off morning sickness and it worked. Well at least that's the only thing I can attribute it to that I did specifically for that reason. Or it could have been just dumb luck. However ND's give you a weekly shot of B vitamins for severe morning sickness so it kind of makes sense that overloading your body with B's would help prevent it. But again, maybe I was just lucky. I never had one moment of even queasiness and I'm 15 weeks along now. I also saw an accupuncturist for several months before pregnancy and I am still continuing weekly through this pregnancy.
What I did have was severe fatigue, but my ND gave me something natural for that too and it was greatly reduced. If are pregnant again and really suffering go to an ND (naturopathic doctor), they have lots of remedies that wont hurt the baby that MD's wont tell you about because they think it's a bunch of baloney.

I don't think I had anything to do with it really ... maybe I was just lucky? I had to curb my eating though. I had times when I would feel nauseas but it was either because I ate too much or ate too little. So I had to make sure I was eating something small every 2 to 3 hours and then I was fine. My whole pregnancy to me seemed pretty easy ... the only real side effect that I had was the swollen ankles towards the end ... my ankles looked like thighs!! haha ... I can take it if that is my only problem ... Hopefully I am as lucky with the next one!
