I would try canvas and then use either paint markers, craft paint stamp pads, or find the fabric permanent paint at the craft store. Congrats!
Hi ladies I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on making a welcome home sign for my hubby. The sign will be outside. I need to know what are the best fabrics to use and what is best to use to decorate and write on the sign with. Any ideas are appreciated.
Thank you
thanks everyone! I have some great ideas and plan on putting many of the to use. Thanks for the support

If you got some cheap muslin fabric and acryllic water proof paints you could hang in in front of the garage or windows of the house.
Another idea if you have garage windows or a bigger front window is to get window paints. They look like bingo dawbers. They are washable and come right off the window, but you can put them on the inside and the will show through to the outside. You can do the whole window like you see in some window displays at stores. Just remember if you do it from the inside to write backward so he can read it from the outside.
You can do sidewalk chalk on the driveway.
Congratulations! You must be so very excited! God bless you and your family for the sacrifice!

what about a plywood board, and use spray paints.
We have a plastic sign that says WELCOME HOME before that we used a sheet with just tempura paints and glitter, lots of glitter.
We always make his favorite dinner. We also go all out and have red, white, and blue swags on the porch and window markers on the van, yellow ribbons on the mailbox.
I used lights one year and spelled out WELCOME HOME in the yard with red white and blue Christmas lights.
Party Suppliers has a really cool Superman balloon.
You can order M&M's in red and gold that say WELCOME HOME or whatever. I think you can get them with the EGA on them too.
I ordered sugar cookies form a gal in KC and she made them into yellow ribbons and little Marines.
My kids all make poster board WELCOME HOME signs. We have them plastering the garage.
I buy him a "man gift". Last year it was the air compressor.

Congratulations on your husband coming home! Mine just got back from Afghanistan a few months ago. I'm not that crafty so I actually ordered a personalized welcome home banner from Oriental Trading. It was a nice size, looked great, and was only $14.99 plus shipping. Depending on what you use to make your sign, you might spend about the same amount of money. You can check out the banner at http://www.orientaltrading.com/ui/browse/processRequest.d...
I hope this helps.

when my husband came home last time we got a free profession banner from a website who gives them out...we were able to upload his picture and a message!! It was great! its www.BuildASign.com and then there is a link for military signs....We had one that we hung on the front porch for days and another we brought to pick him up...Also I dont know if this is your first deployment or not but be prepared for a rough adjustment period for him. I am a Army veteran myself and a current army wife, coming home from deployment is hard, home doesnt feel like 'real life" any more and you feel out of place in your own home...making decisions, even little ones, are stressful...but it will pass! Good luck
A lot of people use paint and a sheet. (I'm an army wife too) Others have them made professionally. I would get just a blank vinal sign from a sign shop, then decorate with craft paint myself
When my husband came home, I used a 100% cotton twin bed sheet and fabric paint - not the craft paint. Fabric paint and markers have instructions on how to "set" the paint so it can be washed and laundered...so it withstood the weather fine.
I made a giant Red White and Blue ribbon and wrote welcome home. I plan to use the same banner for future deployments and so I put a bronze star on the banner with the dates of deployment and the kids hand prints around it.
Good luck as you "get ready" for the big day! I am sure you are very excited.

When my Husband was in the Marine, the wives would make signs using plain white sheets. It'a cheat solution and can be customized however you want to decorate it. My husband always asked that I did not do this, it would embarress him. He Would rather me show up to pick him up, He always said that's all he need. So you might check with him first, guys can sometimes be funny about those things. (However I would always cook what he wanted and have his favorites things at the house for him).
