Weird Stomach Bug ...

Howdy,
I hope I don't gross anyone out, but my kids have had this weird stomach bug for a week. My daughter started out with diarreah for two days, no fever and maybe threw up once. (My husband gave her yogurt before bed - we won't go there.) Then I had 2 days of stomach issues. My son spent the next two days throwing up every evening at bed time and on the third day, he had diarreah, but no throw up. Both of their diarrheas are yellowish. The thing that baffles me is that there is no sign of illness. They play normally and are active. But today, 5 days later, my daughter woke up with diarrhea again. Has anyone experienced this before? Other than the BRAT diet what do I need to do/not do to make this go away and not come back? What is it? Is it Girardiasis?

THANKS

What can I do next?

I agree with Julie P. Probiotics really help by adding good bacteria back into the stomach. Applesauce is actually good for diarreah but don't use the kind with added sugar. Cut sugar from the diet as long as there's diarreah because it will only make it worse! Good luck!

HI, there is nothing in the world to do for this. My youngest son and I were at the doctor for a month with diarreah and throwing up. With mine also came nausea. My son lost alot of weight and i lost like 4 pounds. It is a virus that your body is getting rid of. so count it as a good thing you are soing all of that or it will still be in you. We felt fine and went about our normal day. we finally got better after a month ans no kidding, while everyone else got the flu our bodies didnt except it so we could be around severely sick people and never catch it. I kept my son well hydrated and did not let him have milk or anything acidy like juice, tomatoes, fruit with acid Etc. I gave him pedialite and nausea medicine. I get the equate motion sickness pills from walmart. Thats all I got for you, it will run its course any medicine the doctor gives you will only cover the symptoms not heal them. Try Ginger water. biol ginger and pour the water in a cup with a little honey and give it to him. it seems to work for everything.

Sounds kind of like Roto Virus. Does the poo smell really rotten? If so, it's Roto Virus.
My son got this twice in like 4 months!!

BRAT diet and Lactobacillius (probiotics). You can get a box of Lactobacillius granules from just about any pharmacy and when you get home, just mix a little packet in their apple sauce. The bacteria are beneficial bacteria and necessary to keep their guts in proper digestive order. Walgreens, CVS, HEB Pharmacy all carry it. Peoples pharmacy also has probiotics too.
It worked wonders on my son in just a couple days and also helped clear up his diarrhea rash on his bottom.

I just got over this same thing. It took about a week and a half and I lost thirteen pounds in the process. The doctor checked my blood and a stool sample and couldn't find anything. By the time they got all those results back, I was fine again and they said it must have just been some virus that I had picked up. It will go away soon, just keep them hydrated with plenty of fluids. My doctor told me to drink gatorade and it helped with the nausea as well.

Same thing in my family last week! No sign of illness, but very loose bowels for a day or two. Just let it pass. Disinfect door knobs, etc. Wash hands often.

I have heard from several friends that a stomach bug is going around. So, yes it could be a virus and you should keep everyone hydrated and eating their saltine crackers... However, its possible that you all are reacting to mild food poisoning (especially since there is no fever). Diary products can turn quick, especially on the drive home in car, in this darn heat... or maybe they weren't kept cold enough when they were delivered to the store in the first place-?! You can always buy a few new yogurts/milk and see if the symptoms clear up over the next 1-3 days. If they do, then throw out your older milk and yogurt.

One of my girlfriend's children just had the same thing, the doctors think it's a parasite...apparently more common in kids than we think. Your doctor can have a stool sample analyzed to see if that's it.

Hi L.,
When my husband & I had a bout with a stomach virus recently I scoured our house. I sprayed Lysol on all the door knobs, cleaned the bathroom with products that contained bleach (be sure to get the flushing lever on the toilet too). I also washed all our linens in hot water & basically tried to rid our house of the virus where it could be living on surfaces so we weren't continually passing it around. I also became extra strict about handwashing & cleaned some of my son's toys. I like the Chlorox Anywhere spray cleaner because its safe for use around children & pets, but still gets rid of the germs. Thankfully my son never got it & I think that helped. Be sure to keep everyone well hydrated. Don't forget about yourself too! I ended up in the ER with serious dehydration with the virus we had.
Hope you all get better soon!

I know bugs can last several days, and the diarrhea can last many as well.. I would go and get some probiotics.. You can get them at Central Market, Peoples Pharmacy, or depending on what HEB you go to.. They are in the health food dept. and they come refrigerated. It comes in a powder consistency form and put either 1 or 2 teaspoons in some yogurt twice a day.. This won't help stop the diarrhea but it replaces all the bad bacteria with good bacteria that you are losing with the diarrhea. yuck.... good luck..

I agree with Amy C. It could be Cryptosporidium. A really strong virus that is picked up mostly by swimming, but can also come from drinking water. It can take a while (up to 10 days) before any signs of illness show so even if it had been awhile since you last swam, that could be it.
Just make sure your kids are drinking enough so they don't get dehydrated!

I had an old pediatrician that once told me to put my children on clear liquids (gatorade, pedialite, popscicles, koolaid, jello, sprite/7-up) as much as they wanted. No soups or other liquids that could contain grease as it gives the virus something to live on. Through their protests I was told to continue this for 24 hours. The only time this did not cure the problem was when it ended up that they actually had the flu. Hope this helps!!!
