Adult Stomach Bug? What Could This Be?

I realize this isn't a medical site but I know someone else has dealt with this. I've had the worse case of diarrha for the better part of the last three days. TMI warning - it's like my insides are being liquified over and over. I'm barely eating, but I am drinking lots of water and plain tea. I had a slight fever initially, but that's gone and I have not other symptoms. I might put a call into my doctor tomorrow, but in the meantime, what could this be? Just a virus that will pass? Getting tired of running to the bathroom 1-3X per hour during the day. Any advice as to how to stop it, or will it just run its course? Help!

What can I do next?

Sounds like norovirus to me. It went through my school earlier this year. Horrible. Be careful to stay hydrated.

oh, that bug is just dreadful!
take imodium!
but even it won't completely shore up a liquid intestinal tract.
i myself would not go to the doctor unless it continues on. you're probably past the worst of it. and you're doing everything right.
hope you feel better soon, poor mama!

There's a nasty norovirus that has been going around.
You don't need to eat solid foods for quite awhile.
Keep your fluids up (water, tea, Pedialyte, Gatorade, clear chicken broth, ginger ale) else you'll get dehydrated and end up in the hospital with an IV to get you re-hydrated again.
A doctor once told us that when a gut gets irritated it can sometimes stay irritated for a long time after the initial cause has resolved itself.
As a toddler our son had diarrhea for almost 8 weeks before it cleared up.
You'll be fine as long as you keep those fluids up and electrolytes balanced.

If it does not resolve in another day or 2 you should be seen and have a stool sample checked. Most adult problems with loose stool is food borne so if it does not resolve you may need antibiotics ( salmonella, campylobacter etc). Keep hydrating in the mean time go easy on food with BRAT diet. Gut rest and fluids. Best wishes.

Please update us: Did you go to the doctor yet? This is day four for you and by now you are dehydrated. This could be the norovirus or even a foodborne illness, but whatever the cause, please tell us you have already seen a doctor. You might need IV hydration if this keeps up -- water and plain tea will not replace the electrolytes you are losing and you absolutely need to be drinking electrolyte replacement drinks as well. I hope things get better. Please don't let dehydration make this worse!

OMG, you do not have to suffer like this!! Take Imodium AD (anti diarrheal). It will not prolong the virus rather it will restore your gut. Look it up if you are skeptical but seriously you do not have to deal with this. Feel better!!

Sounds like that nasty norovirus, especially if you haven't changed any meds or eating something unusual. IF that is norovirus, it is extremely contagious.

Pepto-Bismol is good to use, but be sure you are not allergic to aspirin....it has Salicylates in it, as does Aspirin, and don't use it if you are prone to bleeding disorder or ulcers. My Internist said the "Bismuth" in it works like an antibiotic. We used to use it in the hospital with patients who had "Montezuma's Revenge" (diarrhea unresponsive to conventional treatment) when they drank bad water in Mexico and picked up a parasite.

Hope you feel better soon.
I had it about 3 weeks ago and one dose of Pepto made huge difference.

I know there is a bug going around like that. But my mom had to go to the doctor for it too, and hers turned out to be some medicine she was taking. Are you taking any new meds?

This happened to me a few times this past month. The only things that seemed to help were probiotics in large doses. As in, when you normally can take one at a time, up to four per day, instead take two at a time 3x a day for a few days. This seemed to help. Also, you could take immodium--that works too. If it makes you feel any better, that, um, symptom for me was unprecedented this winter--I started to wonder if I had a parasite!

I, my family and friends have gad diarrhea for several days. All you can di is drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. I usually have a queasy stomach at tge same time. I eat soft, easily digested food if I eat at all. The BRAT dieft is good.

I expect the doctor would say the same. Because you don't have a fever know that this will stop in a few days.

I have irritable bowel syndrom I frequently have bouts of diarrhea and take otc antidiarrheal medicine as suggested by my doctor. If diarrhea is not usual for you and you don't have a fever or upset stomach I suggesf that you could take this medicine. But do ask the doctor first.

A lot of good advice below. I'll just add, my husband got a norovirus when we were on a cruise, he suffered for 5-6 days, despite taking Immodium AD & other drugs.

When you get a strong or long-lasting bout of diarrhea, it can strip your intestinal tract of the good, digestive bacteria. That needs to be replenished. Yogurt naturally contains lactobacillus, and you can buy over the counter capsules of acidophillus.

The "go to" probiotic that we use for problems like this is Floragen 3. It's available from the pharmacist, but no prescription needed. (they usually keep it refridgerated in the pharmacy) It is recommended during/after a course of antibiotics, & will work in your situation as well.

Let me just note that this is not a cure, if there is something else causing the diarrhea. However, if it was just a virus & now your system is out of balance, it will be exactly what you need.

Best of luck! T.

I had an issue like that a couple of years back it was basically like water in, water out. I wish I knew then what it took 6 days to figure out - Pepto pills. Once I started taking those I was able to start recovering. I was able to nibble some crackers and banana after that without horrible results.

Definitely stomach bug ... Virus. I just spent 3 days in the hospital for it, so stay hydrated and if it gets worse, call the doctor or get to the ER. Dehydration and time inpatient is way worse. Feel better ... I'm getting there.

3 days is a lot -- possibly salmonella. Make sure you are getting a lot of fluids.

I know you posted this yesterday, but if this is continuing today then that would mean you're on day four now. I really hope that you did call the doctor because after three days and having to use the bathroom for liquid diarrhea 1-3X per hours that means that you can't hold anything in. Your output for the water and tea you're taking in is more than what you're retaining. Your risk of dehydration is very high so I would call your doctor if you haven't already. I would have called prior to trying to take Immodium or anything else, actually, especially if you tried a BRAT diet and it didn't work. Plus those medications tend to feck up your insides once you're done with them. They're just not good for you at all and I never take them without a doctor telling me to. I have too many intestinal issues to mess with that nasty stuff.
