Weird Question: Inside of Mouth Peeling

Does the inside of your mouth peel? I felt so weird about this for so long and was worried that it might be something more serious. I've asked my dentist TWICE why this happens, she shrugs it off and has told me to switch toothpaste...and recommended I see my oral surgeon. I don't use a specific type of toothpaste. But the more google searches I do, the more I'm finding out that this is common: whitening toothpastes, Listerine, and toothpastes w/baking soda and peroxide in them kinda, basically, sloughing off the skin on the inside of your mouth. Has anyone experienced this? If so, what toothpastes did you switch to and what ingredients in toothpastes do you avoid? I feel like I buy so many...am I allergic to ALL OF THE?

What can I do next?

I had a problem with certain toothpastes too. It was bothering my gums so much that I wanted to pull my teeth out. My dentist told me I was sensitive to certain toothpaste; most likely the ones with whitening agents in them. He recommended Colgate Total (the basic one) and Aquafresh (again the basic one). He told me to stay away from Crest. Hope this helps you. If that doesn't work, I would ask my doctor (M.D.)

I noticed the same problem several years ago, I agree its kinda freaky. You are not alone! It is indeed very annoying. I notice it is most pronounced when I use any toothpaste with whitening agents or baking soda like you already discovered. The toothpaste that has worked best for me is Colgate Total advanced fresh gel. It doesnt have whitening agents or baking soda and I havent had any problems with the peeling since I started using this one. Good luck!

Hi,

I had the same problem and it took me forever to figure out that it was my toothpaste. I now use Mentadent and no longer have any issues. I'm not sure which ingredients in the other toothpaste brands were causing the peeling on the inside of my mouth, but, I've used all the Mentadent "flavors" including the whitening and the baking soda w/ peroxide and never had the problem again.

HTH!

Switch to Sensodyne toothpaste for a while and then try one brand at a time. Sensodyne is for sensitive teeth and gums.
I have had reactions to whitening toothpaste also and that is what I had to do. In the future, try sensodyne toothpaste with baking soda for stains on teeth. It will clean without the reaction.

I thought I was the only person that this happened to so I have not mentioned it to anyone. Just a couple years ago we had house guests who left an almost empty tube of Crest Pro-Health toothpaste and I finished the tube off. I liked way the Crest made my mouth feel so I bought a tube shortly afterwards. The peeling started just a few days later and when I guit using it and the peeling stopped. Right now I am using Colgate Whitening Baking Soda and Peroxide Oxygen Bubbles Brisk mint and am not having the peeling.

It doesn't mean you are allergic. I have the same issue, but it doesn't really bother me. I just kind of swipe it all off about an hour after I brush my teeth and that's it. It's no big deal. However if it bothers you, I recommend brushing with straight baking soda. I never had this issue when I used to brush with baking soda. I only stopped because I was semi-nomadic (military) for a while and a tube of toothpaste was easier to transport than an open box of baking soda. Your teeth will get just as clean this way as with toothpaste.

Dear T. - Many OTC toothpastes have harmful, harsh ingredients in them. You might do well with a paste like Tom's of Maine, or tooth polish from Melaleuca. Natural food stores also carry brands that are mild. The sloughing could also be diet related. Your tissue could be reacting to citrus fruit, alcohol, sodas, or some other food or drink. Finding the culprit will be a process of elimination. Good luck to you and Happy Holidays!

I've experience the same thing with all those good but slighter harsher oral products. Have you tried toothpastes like Sensodyne? It works great. Perhaps, even a plain toothpaste without all that extra stuff like whitener, tartar control, etc... If I don't have the extra money to spend on Sensodyne(it's kind of pricey), that is what I usually go for. It works the same. Hope this helps! Merry Christmas!!

I had the same thing happened, but the opposite from the last poster - I actually had issues with Colgate and switched to Crest, which does not affect me - just leaves my mouth minty. The Crest is whitening....but still no issues. Also - I like Tom's Natural Toothpaste too...it is all natural, so that may help?? Hopefully you will find the right one, like it and be able to stick to it with no problems. Good luck!!
