I just recently had a son four months ago. And I am having a hard time losing the weight. The problem is that I was a little overweight when I got pregnant. My husband works 12 hour shifts so it is hard for me to get to the gym. I need to lose about 60lbs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for the ideas and support. I am going to the gym when my husband is home to watch the kids. I am also cutting out all starches and sweets. I am going to cheat on Thanksgiving though. I figure if I have to slave in the kitchen I get to try it. :):):)

Walking is good exercise if you can put them both into a stroller and go for a long walk once a day. There are also Mom's groups that get together to do stroller cardio workouts.

Yoga is excellent for weight-loss, as is Pilates, and you can get a tape or DVD to do at home. Try when your daughter is napping and put your son in a swinging chair to entertain him.

There are a lot of good diets and bad diets out there. I'm trhing Dr. Abravanel's Body Type Diet and Lifetime Nutrition Plan. It is very balanced and easy, and not severe like some of the ones where you have to give up an entire food group.

Two friends of mine lost 18 and 24 lbs. using Weight Watchers meetings. They said that the interaction with others was irritating, but really motivated them. There are also online diets that are helpful, but not as good as having someone to account to.

It seems like eating fresh veggies (not from cans) and less of meats, cheeses, etc. is the best way to flush toxins, get the most nutrition from your food, and reduce your cravings, although it takes a week or two to get rid of the cravings entirely. Real food is best in any circumstance.

I'm still battling my 30 extra pounds, but the more veggies I eat, and the more Yoga I do, the less stress I have in my life, the better my moods with my son, and the stronger and healthier I feel. A lot of it is emotional, and you have to want to lose weight for yourself and nobody else.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!

Hi L.,
First off don't be too hard on yourself, experts always say it takes about 9 months to lose all the weight ( because it took you about 9 months to gain it). Walking worked best for me because my daughter can come along for that. I've also figured out how to work out while playing with my daughter, for example I play "air plane" with her where she blances on her tummy on my feet ( holding my hands!) and I lift her and lower her using my legs. This works my abs hard and my butt- and she LOVES it. Also when I throw her up in the air I do squats- catch, squat, throw, catch, etc, etc. Also, check out Get Fit Mommy and stroller strides. Cardio and wight training with your kiddos. Good luck!

In the recent years I have also had trouble with my weight and have tried every diet/workout regimen around. The only one that worked for me was eating healthy. I went to Aesthetic MD, 8591 E. Bell Rd, Scottsdale,###-###-####. The diet has been advertised on ABC to help you lose up to 40 lbs in 40 days. I lost 27 lbs in 40 days. So, it does work. I would suggest that you call and go in for a free consulation. The Doctor is Dr. Gilles and they also have other offices in the Valley depending on your location. This is the only diet that changed my way of thinking about food.

Good Luck,

I found it hard to lose the weight when I started having multiple children...I went to the gym for a little while, but it was too expensive and too hard to get to...I started working out at home, I was doing different sets of leg lifts (my husband calls them pay-lays), "girlie" push-ups, and crunches. It helped me a lot. (Which I need to get back into)!
The leg lifts work everything! Your legs (thighs,a big problem for me), stomach, butt. EVERYTHING! Let me know if it helps!

I have had great results on weight watchers. Like you, I had some to lose before my pregnancy, and was doing so on the weight watchers program. I recently started back on Sep. 25th and to this day I have lost 15lbs.

There is a WW on Elliot and McClintock that offers a Mommy and me meeting on Modays at 10am. They ask you to come early to weigh in (9:30-10).

Its a great was to lose the weight, have support and meet new mothers. They also have a plan for nursing mothers too! Check out the web site.

Hope this helps!

We bought a family membership at the Y and they have free child watch. It makes it much easier for me to get out and work out when my husband is not home to help. Also, I bought an exercise ball and use it around the house while caring for my son. When he's fussy or needs to be rocked and bounced. I sit on the ball to do it instead of the rocking chair or pacing. It will give you a good, quick butt, leg, and core muscle workout without interfering with your mommy duties.

I have a 8 month old.I lost all of my pregnancy weight fairly quick. the big thing that helped me was eating healthier food and keeping track of my calorie intake. I lowered my intake to about 1300 to 1500 a day instead of the usual 2000 they tell you to eat. I kept track of everything on the website www.sparkpeople.com. which really helped. also pay attention and make sure your eating the actual serving size. another small thing you can do is take a parking space further away from the store so you get alittle bit of exercise walking to the store. this is what worked for me. But everyone is different everyone gains and loses at different rates. Good luck and congrats on your new little one!

Hi L.,
I had the same issue when I had my youngest son (He's 4 years old now). When he was a year old I joined Weight Watchers. I loved it and it really did work! I lost 30lbs in 8 months and feel so much better. I know that going to meetings right now are probably not realistic. The secret is to make small changes in your eating habits each week until they become new habits. The biggest changes I made were: drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day, planning what I was going to eat the night before (and sticking to it), including fruits and/or vegetables with every meal, and reducing my portion size. It might take a long time to lose the weight, but don't give up! Better to go slowly down the scale than slowly up! :) You can do it!
PS - I also bought a couple of yoga and pilates DVDs to use at home. Find one that has a couple of routines about 20 minutes long. A little sanity break! :)

I have a friend who did the LA Weight loss program. She has had two kids. She looks amazing, but does not work out, because she cannot find the time with her work and home life. Anyways, I don't know that much about the program, but she really liked it. She said she is smaller now than before she got married almost four years ago. You can probably find a lot of info online about the program. Hope this is somewhat helpful.

What helped me lose weight(was 165, now weigh 123 lbs) was that I had gestational diabetes. When I switched to low-carb diet, I pretty well knocked out bread and milk. I eat my burgers in lettuce leaves, like at CArl's Jr. I will only have a soda on special occassions. I buy 2 loaves of spelt bread a month for my family, and that is it.

Also look into what is called Food Combining, and possibly a short term salad fast, where for several days a month in a row, have only a salad for dinner.

Walking with baby in stroller is good. Some moms go to Malls in bad weather before the shops open and walk together. Maybe get a work out buddy, there are MOMs groups in many places. Mops is more christian oriented. MOMs seems to have more split-off groups of interests( I think it is Moms offerering moms support)

Good luck- I'd be wary of Atkins, most people that do that end up taking too many supplements from what I have heard.

Weight Watchers is great. Especially the WW online program. You don't go to meetings, just track what you are eating online each day. It really works!

Also, Mountainside Fitness has a great daycare program there to get your workouts in.

Hi L.,

You may want to check into your local YMCA. Most have a daycare center that comes with the membership. I find that it's a great way to get my much needed "me" time while the kids have a blast. The great thing about the Y is that they have all levels of fitness classes, wieghts, swimming and cardio equipment. So much to choose from especially if you're just starting out. Best of luck!

I have about 40 to lose to get back to the weight I was before my oldest was born I had no problem loseing the weight after my boys but I am very stuborn I refuse to diet I think it is a waste of time the best thing for you to do is portion control. As far as exersice you have the two best free weights in the world at your disposal floor exercise with the little ones use them as your resistanse. The park is great aspecially chasing the older one If you are out to eat eat half of what they serve you and dessert is not a dirty word if you split it with your hubby! Have fun

Hi L....

My 23 year old dughter was about 190 after her second child...She lost major weight just walking about two mile each day with her two kids. She also has reently joined curves. (Some insurance companies like Blue Cross, have an affiliate program, and they pay the membership fee. The monthly charge is about $29.00 month. I highly reccomend the one in Elizabeth, rather than the one in Parker. You can join a MOPS class as well, and sometimes the moms will rotate moms day out. There is also a new place on Dransfelt Rd? in Parker,(Nearby the WORN store) where you can drop your children off and go shopping... Also. my youngest who is now 14, lost major weight becomming a vegetarian...not all at once but by eliminating meat gradually, and replacing it with fish two times a week. She still lves her breads and cheeses, and salads with baby shrimp etc. She went from 150 ponds at age 13 to her now weight of 120.
I wish you all the best...

First, take it easy on yourself! Second, see if you have a Stroller Strides (http://www.strollerstrides.net) or a Baby Boot Camp in your area. Or if your gym has daycare. You can also look into yoga centers that have classes where you can take your baby. And just taking a good walk with the stroller is also a great approach. But a good walk is one where you really get your heart rate going. You may want to invest in a double stroller if that's the only way you can really get moving. Good luck!

I had a hard time losing weight after I had my son as well. It took me almost a whole year to finally lose all of it. I couldn't get out and excersize either. What I did was watch my portion control. I would only eat a small serving every couple of hours. I never went for seconds or thirds like I did when I was pregnant. I hope this helps. Good luck. You will get there.

Are you nursing? I lost all of my weight with both kids, . I beleive that because I nursed for a year, that it really helped me get the weight off. I also have a diet where I eat the same things every day. Some people can not do this. I ate things such as: Balance protein bars, cottage cheese mixed with 1/2 container of yoplait fat free yogurt, chicken breast, (no skin) mandarin chicken salad from Wendys with low fat honey mustard drressing, an apple, 3 eggs fried with only 1 yolk with mushrooms and a bit of mozzerella cheese. these are some things that I eat every day. I really hope this helped, it sure helped me. Good luck:))

Hi L.,

First, I'd like to congratulate you for wanting to do this right before the holidays! Now, you can work out with your baby. That's what I did. There's a book called "Bouncing Back Into Shape After Baby" or something like that. The cover is red and white with a lady and her baby on it. Anyway, it has a bunch of excercises that you can do with your baby. It not only helps you with excercise, but it gets your body back into pre-baby shape, physically, such as your keigal (sp?) muscles, your pelvic region, etc. It's fabulous and very imformational! If you don't want to get the book, you can always do other excercises at home with videos or TV for instruction.
If you'd like to go on an easy diet, I know of a great Trim Advantage System that increases protein, cuts out the bad fats, curbing your appetite and burning more calories. I know many people who have gone on this diet with excercise and have lost a lot of weight. And once you get to the weight you want, there's a way to keep you there, so you don't keep losing it. A friend of mine just started it a week ago, along with excercise, and she already lost 5.something pounds (I forget the exact number), and she is one of those people who never loses weight. She has been on other diet plans in the past and she said none were as easy and didn't work this quickly as this one does. You can call me for more info if you want, but email me first, so I don't give my phone number to everyone. ;-) My email is ____@____.com
Above all, excercise is key. I would recommend that, first and foremost, above all other things.

Best wishes,
C.

Losing weight is hard. I have big all my life and yet again I am trying to lose some weight. My goal weight is 175 lbs. still have 45 to go! What helps me is portion control. But I have a hard time keeping to the smaller portion and I love to hide and eat. If I make myself sit in one spot all the time when I want to take even one bit it helps me not to eat because I do not want to go to that area just for snacking. I have started a web site 360.yahoo.com/ktashish talking about weight loss. I nursed both of my kids and with the first one I gained 60 lbs just with nursing! it is hard and I wish you luck.

I too was overweight before my pregnancy. I had 55 pounds to lose and joined LA Weightloss. I was able to take the weight off and I have kept off 50 pounds of it for a while. I didn't go to a gym but I had to change my eating habits which were really poor. I now eat healthier. The only problem is you would need to find time to weigh in 3 times a week until you get your weight off. When the weight is off you only go once a week for a year to help make sure you keep your weight off.
I wasn't able to go to a gym but I found just running after my 2 year old son and taking him out for walks helped me.
Good luck!

Hi L.,
I also gained weight after having my baby 5 mos. ago. I was still carrying around weight from my now two year old, who was one when I got Preg. again. I lost 95 lbs. after my fist child doing yoga and I also only ate red meats once a week.
Eating only whole foods tricks your body into letting the fat go. When you take fat out completely your body will hold onto what you have esspecially if your nursing. My family and I eat only whole food like butter, whole milk , lots of veggies, even desert once in a while. Water also helps those cravings. When you feel like snacking have a big glass of water. Keeping busy helps me keep my mind off snacking. I need to lose some weight too, I hope you have support from your family, my husband likes me fluffy so he is no help. Good luck, A. V
