I was put on glucophage a couple of years ago. My doctor suspected I had PCOS. What I found was this helped level out my eating patterns. I wasn't insanely hungry all the time. I did find if I ate too much fat or sugar, I was running for the bathroom, though.

My doctor did say that she saw a lot of success with patients on glucophage who went with a South Beach type diet.

Do you have PCOS? I have PCOS and I'm on Met for it. Honestly I've been on it for 3 years and never had a weight loss until I started South Beach in Feb.

I've never heard of people going on it w/o PCOS or diabetes. In fact when I list that I take it, many doctors immediately assume I have diabetes.

Anyways to answer the question, Met only works for me w/ a low carb diet.

I tried this once several years ago. I had horrible cravings and wanted to eat all the time! I feel that it completely messed up my hormones as I started gaining weight (about 30 lbs!) Then I found it even harder to lose weight after I got off of it. I've heard it works for some people but it definately did not work for me. :0(

Hi E.,

Why did the dr. put you on it? Were you diagnosed with PCOS? That is why I was originally put on it. It did help but it takes awhile. I was put on it because of conception issues. I didn't notice it at the 500 mg, but I was moved up to 1500 mg and noticed a big difference in my energy level, I didn't get the shakes and my weight came off.

Also, if you want to speed things up, journal your food and figure out your calorie and fat intake. It takes some time at first, but you will be amazed at how quickly the food adds up without noticing. calorieking.com is a free website to determine nutrition count.

Take care,

I am not sure what your doctor prescribed, but I really had good luck going on nutrisystem a year ago January! I lost 30 pounds. I am a carb lover. And this is the only diet I had luck with, as you can have carbs and they have thought through all the calories, protein, and carb count! It was so easy. I did excercise too and drank a lot of water (flavored water really helped). I have been able to keep it off too. That is the only thing I was frustrated with, with nutrisystem, they didn't have any suggestions to go off the food. However, it really trained me with portion sizes, more veggies & fruit, and whole wheat and skim milk. It worked!! It costs about $10. a day and they deliver it right to your home---no counting of anything yourself or going in to get weighed. Good luck. Hope this helps, A. G

hi E.
I have a 16 month old so I know about the activeness he is in lol
I dont know about the weight loss pill your doc gave you but beware all meds have side effects so you might want to research it before taking them, I started my weight loss challange myself back in Nov 07 and since have lost 45 pounds just through calorie portions and exercising, I stay under 40 grams of fat a day and the calories pretty much follow about 1200-1400 a day and exercise 4-5 times a week just walking on my treadmill. I used www.sparkpeople.com for help too which was my savior, I love that site very helpful you can see my page on there my user name is happymomof3

good luck

I would assume that if your doctor gave you Glucophage it is for more than just weight loss. Do you have an under lying problem like insulin resistance or diabetes? If yes, then Glucophage may help. But it will only help a little, it won't do the bulk of the work for you. If you don't have an underlying problem then Glucophage will give you bouts of low blood sugar and may make you feel terrible. When taking Glucophage please, please, please remember to take with food. It can upset your stomach terribly and reduce your sugar to very low levels.
Best of Luck!!!

I had thought glucophage was for diabetes maintenance rather than weight loss. I would check with him. Twenty lbs is not alot to lose and I would think drugs would be necessary.

Actually the Glucophage is supposed to help with weight loss, but it is prescribed for those with sugar or potential sugar problems. My one doctor started me on this a while ago and I had to work through the side effects, but with the side effects and other issues, and arguing with both of my doctors I finally got a referal to an endocrinologist. The fact the glucophage is a sugar medication means you probably need to have more testing done. I am Insulin Resistant and am now taking this along with another medication. When I started the medication the doctor adjusted it to try and help with the side effects. Some people it works for some it doesn't. Good luck, but your best methode even with taking the medication is watch what you eat and start with eating a half portion of what you would normally eat.

Hi E.! We loved the 19 month stage with our son! What a great time to enjoy with your little one.

Have you been on the glucophage long? How is your body responding?

Did your Dr explain how glucophage works in your body? I have a few friends on it and they did lose weight at first, only one kept it off. Another only lost a couple of pounds. Do you have any blood sugar issues in your history? family's history?

Have you liked any weight loss programs you've tried?

I have some thoughts for you. If you want to email about them let me know. Wishing you good success!

The only way to lose weight is to exercise and watch your food portions. www.sparkpeople.com is a good website to count your calories. You need to figure out how many calories you need to eat to get down to your idea weight. If that all it takes is to take a magic drink or pill don't you think everyone would be on it. I have recently lost 18 lbs (30 more to go) with the help of my daughter who is a dietatin and personal trainer. It's not easy making a life style change but so worth it in the end. Congrats on quitting smoking and good luck to you.

I don't know about glucophage for weight loss, but I just got put on it because I was just found to be diabetic. I use to just drink Pepsi all day and eat dinner. I wasn't trying to lose weight. I have 5 yr old triplets and I was just too busy or distracted or just couldn't find anything that sounded good to eat. Since I have been diagnosed I have been eating 3 meals and 1 snack a day. Only 30 carbs per meal/snack and I have lost 13 lbs since the beginning of April. It would be more but went away for a girls weekend a week ago and gained 6 lbs back due to drinking. lol Good luck and I hope this helps.

Have you modified your diet to cut back on carbs (NOT eliminate them all together, just cut back on them)? Maybe you should meet with a nutritionist you can help you come up with a food plan and can help you understand how your body uses proteins and carbs. Following a good food plan should help, and of course exercise is essential. One friend lost a ton of weight when she was on glucophage. I just lost a little.

Have you been diagnosed with PCO(S)? If not, why does the doctor think the drug will help?

Glucophage is used for diabetes, not weight loss. All though I think it will help you lose some weight. The best plan out there is Weight Watchers. It's not a diet as much as it teaches you how to eat by making better choices. If you have HAP insurance they will help pay for it. They also pay back some of the cost of joining Curves. Good luck!

Hello E. B.! I too am a mom trying to loose weight. I don't know very much about glucophage and it's success rate. What I do know is that I've lost 10 lbs in 5 weeks! I am an Herbalife Independent Distributor and the weight loss products are wonderful without the side effects that some prescription weight control drugs may cause. You will have to determine what works best for you. And also if the glucophage has side effects that you can't handle, then you may want to consider switching to something with a natural base. If you want to know more, I will be happy to talk to you and give you more information!

I haven't tried that but I signed up on a web site called www.sparkpeople.com. It is a great site where you can log everything you eat and it counts calories, proteins, etc. It kind of holds you accountable for what goes in your mouth. Also there are message boards you can post to and it has a great support system!!! I really like it and the best part is it is free!! Check it out :)

Glucophage is for type 2 diabetes and one of the listed side effects is swelling or rapid weight gain.
I would talk with your doctor about something other than meds for a 20 lb loss. Like a sensible diet and exercise program (which if you are pre-diabetic could help with anyway).
Good luck.

You will hear about a million times that glucophage is for diabetics. I used to hear it every time I had another test run at the hospital!

It doesn't work for weight loss. In me, it didn't work for diabetes either. My body couldn't process those pills and they ended up in the toilet. Really! I could see them there!

Weird? Not really. I can help you in a natural way, if you want me to! I have lost 25 pounds and gotten my sugar under control. It's nothing funky or trendy either. Let me know!

Glucophage also known as Metformin is a drug used to treat diabetes or insulin resistance issues (such as with PCOS) it is NOT a weight loss drug. Though if you do have blood sugar issues getting them under control with the glucophage can help you lose weight.

Personally I would call the Dr. and ask why he thinks glucophage would help you lose weight, did he do blood work that points to insulin resistance or diabetes? Did he check your thyroid, and what were your numbers? And don't take the "your TSH is within normal range" you can be symptomatic at any point in the range which is generally .3-5.0 if your TSH is above 2 or below 1 request further testing including thyroid antibodies. Many Many women develop post partum thyroid issues, which cause weight gain.

Hi E., glucophage is a diabetic med, I dont know about it for weight loss, but I am on it for diabeties. I have lost 15 lbs since I started it, but I am also ontrict diet. It helps keep the glucose in your blood stream down, because it is a diabetic med. I hope it works for you, sorry I dont know if that was much help, but when I saw the glucophage, I thought it was weird to be used for weight less. Gook Luck, and let me know if it works well for you, I would love to lose more!!
