What about a personalized gift like their wedding invitation engraved into something special. Like a crystal plate or something like that? See link:

I would suggest even some type of restaurant gift card...if you know a place they like to eat, or you could go with a Let Us Entertain you card which includes many nice restaurants. Or maybe tickets to some sort of show that you feel they would enjoy going to.

I like the idea of a photo album or a frame, with a nice card, keep it simple. If they have told you that your coming is gift enough they probably mean it. they may not want a bunch of extra stuff sitting around.

If you have a digital camera and are free during the wedding (not standing up), something to consider would be to purchase a nice album, and take all the photos you can before and during the service then get them developed and placed in the album before the reception (with extra pages in the album for the reception pics). Wrap and give them the album at the reception with a note stating you'll drop off the reception pics the next day.

I did this for a friend who in turn did it for me and it was wonderful to see wedding photos the day after my wedding instead of waiting for the professional shots to come back.

Do you know what part of Italy they're going to? Unless they've both been there before, you can get them the tour guide for that area (or areas if they're going to multiple towns) which you can buy at any book store. Also, since the flight is so long you can get them nice things for the flight - satin eye pilow, satin neck wrap, luxury travel blanket. Finally, for something really unique, do a little investigating and find a highly acclaimed reastaurant in one of the towns they're staying in and make them reservations. You can even put X amount of money towards the dinner. It will take some coordinating since you'd probably have to call in the middle of the night to make the reservation but they most likely take American Express which you can charge over the phone and pick a place that's really special that one of the tourism books recommended. That would be a wonderful memory. And a final thought, this is something that someone did for my husband and I (our second marriage for both). A couple from home sent from the hotel, delivered to our room, a beautiful tray of fruit, cheese, champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. That was a wondeful surprise that I'll always remember.

Do they enjoy wine???? A wonderful bottle of Chianti or an outstanding Barolo (Italian) wine would be a lovely gift. Even a bottle of Lemoncillo (Italian) liquor is nice. Places like "Sam's Liquors", MainStreet Liquors in Countryside, IL or even Binney's Beverage Depot, In Willowbrook or Orland Park, Il (they have many locations - but I'm familiar with those two). These places can give you guidance. Don't know how much you want to spend but...buying a Magnum of the wines mentioned (big bottle!) makes a statement and is fun to share.
