My son is 9 years old and he likes wrestling, arcades and to be around children his age but I am 42 years old so all my friends have teenagers or adult children. Can anyone suggest some things I can do with my son so he won't be so bored. I work in San Francisco, so my mom drops him off at school so I don't really know any of the parents that have children attending his school. We go to the movies a couple times a month and we go to Albany Bowl to play arcade games there, but they don't have very many. I would love to find out about other options.

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Well San Francisco has a lot going on.
Please visit www.ppssf.org for links to websites and also go to sfgate.com
Playdates have worked for me a lot. You invite and let your son be invited, that way you don't have to be involved w/parents at all. Just make sure you know the family and have visited thier house a least once.
Good luck!!

Dear G. My son is now in college but when he was young we took him to the science center and the space center in Oakland Chabot telescopes available every weekend on clear nights and I also got him to usher with me @the California Shakespere festival They love the help and it is very good bonding for mother and son. he also did their improv class in the summer and got college credits . The other group that was great for him was the boy scouts. They learn camping /sports /community service/friendyfolks there might be a group at his school My other favorite place is the lib programs and the children's reading room. The band is fun if he is musically inclined .My son loved arcade games too.
Berkeley and Oakland have alot of options so I hope you find more to do with a wider base I also lover the museums. Good luckJuliet1

There are tons of science oriented sports around including lawrence hall of science, chabot space and science museum, oakland zoo. There is also something called the Adventure park down at the berkeley marina, supposed to be great outside climbing and playing. when I was nine I played on a local soccer league around here if your son would like that. Just some ideas! good luck!

Hi G.:

Try contacting Bananas in Berkeley. They specialize in childcare info but will have other activities for kids as well. Lawrence Hall of Science is terrific for kids as well. Playing an instrument, participating in a soccer club or perhaps other team sport would all be good for his age. There is also El Cerrito Community Center that would have a variety of programs.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck.

I live in El Cerrito, too. Our boys are 7 & 2.5 yrs. Si your son at all interested inmartial arts? There are several studios in the area. Go to Park & rec on Moeser to see what classes they're offering for winter & spring. Check out Albany, too, on Marin. Is he intersted in skate boarding? Teere's a skate park on Harrison just off San Pablo behind the McDonalds. And always my favorite....the Downtown Berkeley Y on Allston across from the main PO. We've been members here for ages. They are very family-friendly & offer classes at very reasonable prices...sports, martial arts of different kinds, swimming lessons. They also have open swim times throughout the week as well as offering Friday night activities. What about your your mom getting to know some of the parents? It might be awkward for her but you're son will be there a couple more years so it would be good for him to have some bonds at school. He'll probably go to middle school wn/most of these kids, too. Maybe she could encourage him to ask a friend to play after school & take them to a local park. Hope this helps & good luck!
