Washing Machine Question

I have a high efficiency front-loader. It does save on water (big time) and electricity. The brand is LG. It was written up in consumer's as one of the best...There is a moldy build-up when I open the dr to load the clothes. Do you have a HE washing machine? If so, do you like it? How do you keep it clean? The HE dryer is great. I am not crazy about the washing machine.

What can I do next?

I always leave my door open when I'm not using it, and once in a while just wipe of the rubber seal and never had a problem. I'm on my second set in 10 years? I got one of the first generation front loaders way back when and just had to replace them last year. Never had a mold build up.

We have L.G. front loaders, and we love them. Every once in a while I run a really hot cycle with some vinegar. Also, you must keep the door open all the time when not in use to let it dry out or you will get mold and mildew buildup. Never had a problem!

we have an HE washer (front loader too)

spray with cleaner and wipe with paper towels.

now how to AVOID this in the future - leave the door open when off so the tub can dry better.

we use the "clean washer" function about once every couple months.

we also use vinegar and that keeps the insides pretty clean and sanitized.

ETA - High efficiency dryers do not exist, btw. There are "more efficient" ones, but none meet the definition of HE.

Do a bleach-only wash with no clothes in there once in a awhile .Also, the Tide washer cleaner does a good job. After the last load, keep the door open for a while to let it completely dry out. You can also wipe it down on the inside of the rubber door seal/jam thing after loads to keep it dry. The problem is that it's airtight.

Leave the door open after each load. I never close mine all the way, unless it is running.

Also, periodically run the "cleaning" cycle on it. Your machine should include instructions for how to do this. For my machine, you just use bleach instead of "soap" and use the "clean" button (which fills the machine fuller with water than a normal load of laundry fills it).

I do have a HE washer - Electrolux - and I love it. Although I replaced a front load washer that was in the house I purchased because it had that moldy smell. When I purchased this one, they said after each load, wipe out the front door and the rubber sealing area and leave the door open for awhile. Also, once a month you put a tablet in (you can buy at grocery store or Target) and set the washer on clean and it will keep it from getting moldy.

You need to leave the door of the washing machine open at least 24 hours after using it to air it out. If you only do laundry once a week, I'd leave it open all week long. Most of us probably do laundry more than once a week so leaving it open for 24 hours is sufficient. I love my HE washing machine. I have no problems with odor. The manual should state how to cleanse it should you get an odor. Tide also sells a cleaning kit...but look in your manual for directions...it's just about using a certain amount of bleach for your specific machine to clean it.

We had a front loader that I finally got rid of and went back to a good old top loader (an extra-large capacity one - I love it!). It drove me crazy that I had to leave the door open; my laundry room was small and it seemed like I was forever banging into it. And then when I had a problem with the tub randomly filling with water we decided to use that as an excuse to get rid of it.

I had an Asko washer and never had any issues with the current issues with front loaders. I think this is a design flaw that many of them are finding. There are some products out there to clean them and eliminate the current mess but it is something that has to be repeated frequently.

I agree with all of the other ladies...leave the door cracked. We've never had a problem.

I have a Meile front loader. I've never had a problem with build-up, mold or smells. I leave the door open in between loads. There are products you can buy for HE front loaders to run through a cycle and clean and deordorize them. Perhaps contact LG or your retailer to see if they can recommend such a product.

I don't like the washer either. I don't think it does as good a job as the top loaders. It does not extract dirt like I like. I washed a load of cushion covers from my den's rattan furniture....still dirty after I used the HE. Took it all to a laundry and used a commercial washer......beautiful outcome....I'm not kidding! Now the dryer is excellent....I agree.

I think it depends on the brand. My bro-in-law has no probs with his. We have an LG (prob the same as yours) HE, and I hate it. We even called customer service to confirm the directions for keeping it fresh and mildew-free. We drain it, bleach it, wipe out the rubber seals, run the cleaning cycle, etc, about 1x per month to 6 weeks. We also leave the door open in between cycles. After the routine it is clean smelling only until we use it again. Try the instructions and call customer service to see if they can shed some more insight, though we had no luck. Sorry :( Love the dryer, hate the WM.

Hi,

I have a LG HE washer. And I think the key to not having that mold build up is to keep teh door slightly ajar when not in use so that there is air flow and it dries out any moisture when you are not using it.

I have a Samsung - Love it so far.

Ours has a "trap door" near the bottom of the machine. In the manual it suggests cleaning the trap oncea a month to help remove any buildup. Maybe go thru your manual and see if it has any tips in there to help keep build up from happening.
