"Wart" on Thumb from Thumb Sucking

My almost 8 year old stepson still sucks his thumb. He has a terrible sore on his thumb that looks like a cluster of warts. They don't hurt him but are very unsightful. Any ideas on how to deal with this and also ideas to get him to stop sucking his thumb? We have tried everything I can think of!

What can I do next?

to be honest with you i sucked my thumb until i was eight years old so i know how hard is to be broke but i broke myself of it. Have you tried getting a prescription for it? the taste alone got me to keep my thumb out of my mouth. but what got me to stop fully was the fact that i had a wart on my thumb and it was wet when i started to pick at the skin. when i removed the top layer i noticed a bunch of spores. i started pulling out the spores that were the same color and got no where but when i pulled out the spore that was directly in the middle of the wart (which was the only one that was a different color)it just went away. and it has never come back. if all else fails try that.

Hi K....you sound pretty busy! Thumb sucking is much more difficult to stop then the pacifier - because you can't just take it away! The hardest thing for children who suck their thumb is the nights. Usually it's their coping mechanism to help sooth them to sleep. Social pressure often cures the daytime sucking.

First of all, you should make an appointment with your pediatrician to make sure there isn't a bacterial infection of any kind. He may give you an anti-bacterial cream that can not be put in the mounth. Your son is old enough to understand that putting the medicine in his mouth would make him sick. However, I would still bandage the thumb at night incase he tries to suck it while he's asleep. You can also take him to his dentist and have the dentist discuss what will happen to his permanent teeth if he continues to suck his thumb. Sometimes having a person in authority explain it to him will make a greater impact.

My daughter sucked her thumb until she was seven (at night only). Because she's a girl, I focused on the vanity factor! I told her how much better her thumb was looking while she was working on giving it up. That worked for us!

Good Luck!

They make a stop biting your nails and stop sucking product that you put on the nails or thumb. It tastes AWFUL!! YOu could try putting that on, perhaps when he is asleep so he wont know you did it and when he wakes up and starts to suck his thumb it will be a total shock. However before you put anything on it I would get it checked by the doc.

My last child was a big thumb sucker to the point her thumb looked like it had worts on it & the Dr suggested we find something over the counter to try & so we did & it worked like a miracle. We found a product called THUM & I will warn you it's really nasty but after appling it to her thumb 3 times she was done sucking & she never resorted to sucking her other one either & that was almost 4yrs ago.
You can purchase it anywhere over the counter but I think we bought ours at Wal-Mart.
Good luck!!

K. S.,
Hi there!!! I am a grandma of 5 beautiful kids now, but when I was raising my girls, both of them sucked their thumbs, the older one had a bad sore on her thumb for years - but she finally quit on her own. After they started to grow up, some pharmacist told me there was something you could get to put on their thumbs that tasted rather YUCKY and it might help make them quit. I don't know what it is, but you might ask the next time your into your local Pharmacy ??? Hope that helps!!!

They do eventually quit, but I know, it is upsetting. If it helps any at all, Dad said I sucked my thumb till I was 8 or 9, but I finally quit on my own. I don't remember but...........I turned out ok. lol :) I am sending a hug from a Grandma who ADORES her grandkids, even when they suck their thumbs - and some still do. lol :) It will be ok.

You can dilute Tea Tree Oil with Olive Oil...about 2 drops Tea Tree for every cup of Olive Oil. Put the tea tree Oil on his thumb and it should clear it all up. Tea tree oil is a natural anti-fungal. The only problem is that he'll have to stop sucking his thumb for any cure to really work. Hope that helps.

I would get his thumb checked out to see if indeed there are warts there. My son had a group of warts and had to get them burned off at the doctors office which was not very pleasant. They numb the child w/shots and then literally burn them off with a pointer-type tool. Warts will continue to spread. I wish I had his taken care of at the first sight of one. It just gets worse! Good luck!

My son sucked his thumb at night/bed time up until last summer (age 9). We also visited an orthodontist. He recommended a "thumb guard." It physically prevents a child from putting their thumb up to his pallet. Between that and requesting he give up his baby blanket (helped him sleep), it went away in about a month. We also gave him a nice reward/bribe for quitting. We never had the wart thing because he only used his thumb at night. I'd visit an orthodontist or talk to your pediatrician.

when I was younger I sucked my thumb til I was 7. I think I would have sucked it for longer but I had an appliance on the roof of my mouth that had spikes that made it impossible to suck my thumb. I'm not scarred from it (some people say it SOUNDS cruel, but it really wasn't) and I didn't suck my thumb after it was taken out. My parent's loved it because it straightened up my top row of teeth and was MUCH cheaper than braces. It's something to ask the dentist about.
Also my parents tried to stuff that tasted bad, and i just got used to it.
I see a lot of people saying it will stop on it's own and that's not always the case. My friends mom sucked her thumb until she was 18.

I would have the sore checked by his pediatrician. Maybe the pediatrician can also talk to him about his thumb sucking. He might be more inclined to listen to a doctor? Other than that, I think I would tell him to keep his thumb sucking private and not do it in public. He is almost a pre-teen and chances are once the hormones hit, he'll stop by himself.

Try Tea Tree Oil, you can get it at a health food store like Claudias and Bassetts, it smells bad and tastes bad, so maybe that will help him keep it out of his mouth. I works on everything from cold sores to rashes. It got rid of a wart I had for years in a few weeks. Good Luck I hope this helps.

Hey K.!

I can't give any advise on the thumb sucking, but as for the "wart"....if it looks unsightly like a wart, it probably is. So, be sure to get it checked out. Warts are viral infections, and your son could've picked it up anywhere. There are a lot of treatment options for warts. I would just be sure to address it sooner than later because warts can spread to the lips/mouth area with thumb sucking or biting of the wart.

Good luck!

I was a thumb-sucker until aged 7. I sucked my thumb predominantly at night. So what helped me to stop, after all the bad tasting nailpolishes, etc., was simply to wear a knee sock on my hand (up to my elbow) and put that hand under my pillow at night. I don't know how long it took, but it worked for me!

Best of luck!
