My husband and I are trying to get pregnant with our second child. I went off my birth control around the middle of june when my pack ended and I have had regular periods since untill October my period was about 5 days later than usual when I did get my period it was very heavy with alot of cramping not usual for me but i just figured cause it was late maybe it was a little worse than usual.. Then in November I didnt get a period so I thought well I will wait till the middle of December if I havent started i will take a Pregnancy test well the test was negative so I went to the Dr. and they did a pap and ran some tests on my thyroid and a few other things and said they were normal she gave me some pills to make me have a period and that was all i was told to do. I had my period and everthing seems to be normal now but i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if they were able to get pregnant at all. she said they could start me on some clomid or somthing like that to help with the chances of getting pregnant but i really dont want to have to take anything unless it is the only chance of me having another baby so if anyone has any advice that would be usfull please let me know thanks

What can I do next?

I've heard that it can take up to a year for your cycle to return to normal after taking hormones. Seriously consider the fact that your body just needs more time to get back to normal after being on the hormones. For me it was about 9 months before my cycle got regular after going off the depo shot.
I would suggest looking into the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. it is a great resource and has tons of helpful info.
Also, adding more hormones to the mix might not be the best solution to get "regular". Clomid can help with hormones but one of its side effects is the production of "hostile cervical mucous" which can effect the sperms ability to reach an egg.
HTH and good luck,
M.

Hey M.! I had a similar situation. I was regular when I was on the pill for 2 yrs. Never late. Then I stopped taking it and didn't have a period for almost 9 months (which I thought was great:) but I wasn't pregnant. I had all sorts of tests taken; thyroid, cysts, and they found nothing. I was given they same type of pill to induce my period and still nothing. The next time I went to go see my doctor they told me I had no lining in my uterus, so there was nothing to help me shed. They started me back on birth control to help my body regulate and have a little help having a period. My doctor told me to take birth control for 2-3 months and then monitor my cycle. I could try and get pregnant after that. She also said the chances of getting pregnant are high, because you tend to be very fertile when you come off the pill. Anyways, I hope this helps. If you have any more questions let me know. Good luck!

Hi, I guess there isn't anything different I can offer you than whats already been offered, so I guess the only thing I can tell you is just to be patient. Take your time and try not to rush it because that won't help you conceive. Me and my husband tried for two years to have a baby. I went to the doctors and even set up a appoint to talk about taking fertility drugs to help us conceive. I had regular paps, and even had my thyroid tested and everything came back normal. I would even go two or three months at a time without getting a period and every time I would take a pregnancy test it always came bace negitive so I eventually gave up on trying to conceive. I was even told that I had to have my tonsils removed and I was told not to get pregnant well about two weeks before I was going to have my tonsils removed I started feeling sick so at next doctors appointment a week before my surgery they had me take a pegnancy test and it came back negitive, a week later I had my sergury. Then about a week and a half after that I went back to my Gyno for a yeast infection that I thought was from the meds I was on and its turn out that I was pregnant. So I guess it may just take someone telling you not to get pregnant to maybe help you conceive, or maybe just let things flow, and see where that gets you and just be happy with the fact that you have one healhy baby and know that you can have kids because there are some people out there who have to live with the fact that they can never have kids. But the only thing I can really suggest is that if you feel strongly that there is something wrong with you or your husband push the doctors into checking it out and don't let them stop at "your normal" because I believe that you will know when something is wrong. So if the doctors are saying that everything looks fine and you feel that everything is fine then you probably are fine. But just be patient because I believe that it will happen for you it may just take a little bit of time for your body to get back to normal, and I think that you will conceive when you least expect it. I actually beleieve that every woman goes through this at least once her life. I had to go through it twice. It took us two years for the first and five months for the second, then again I have never been on the birth control pill either but I have even been told that it can take up to a year for your body to get back to normal after getting off the pill, so I would wait for a year and if you haven't conceived yet then go back to the doctor and discuss your options then. And please don't let this response scare you I didn't mean for it to be like that I just want you to follow what your heart is telling you.

Hey M.. My brother and his wife tried for almost a year to get pregnant a second time. It wasn't until she stopped trying that it actually happened. Sometimes, a person can become so stressed out about becoming pregnant that there hormones just aren't exactly right. Maybe try something that will help you relax before hand like a nice massage at the spa or something.

M.,
I know exactly how you feel because I am in the same boat. I got pregnant with my son after using Clomid once. After he was born, we started trying right away for another one. Two and half years later I am still trying. Here is what I was told: doctors don't think missing periods are a big deal until you miss three in a row. The problem is that the lining in your uterus could be thickening with each month you are missing and you could end up hemmoraging and having to have a D&C(this also happened to me).My suggestion is to find a doctor who is willing to look at this like the problem it is. If you had normal periods before and now you aren't, to me that means that something has changed. I was diagnosed with poly cystic ovarian symdrome when I was 22, four years ago. It was only after a missed period for three months that the doctor scheduled a vaginal ultrasound and found cysts on both ovaries. After having my son, we wanted another baby soon after. My regular doctor did nothing to help us along and I couldn't even ovulate on my own. I am now seeing a doctor in Lafayette that specializes in women with fertility issues. i am not pregnant yet, but we have had much succes in making progress. I don;t know if this helps but I hope it does.

I haven't had a period in over 3 years and have an 8 month old baby boy, so it is possible to get pregnant. There has to be something medically causing your lack of periods though, which I would stay on your doctors about.
My doctors recently checked my hormone levels and found that my prolactin level was really high, which can effect your periods. I would also recommend having an ultrasound of your thyroid. My bloodwork was always fine, but I had surgery last month for a large thyroid mass. You never know.
Good luck getting pregnant!
