Viral Infection

My 10 month old son has had an ear infection, turned to eye infection for the last 10 days. He was on Azrithomyicin (sp?) for 5 days (didn't do anything), now he is on Omnicef (he is allergic to Amoxicillin), and as his ears are better, he still battles the eye infection and has a low fever at least once a day. It seems to me that he has a viral infection as the medication isn't really working, but I'm wondering how long an infection like this could last. When alert he is in pretty good spirits. Has anyone had a similar situation? We've been to the Dr twice and two different walk in clinics, they all seem to say he'll be better in a few days. 10 days is more than a few.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses! We have been fever free for over a day now. :) His eyes seemed to be getting better yesterday, but after a nap today, they were a little red today. He's been eating well, all homemade veggies and some fruit and yogurt. In the midst of this long sickness, he seems to be very close to taking his first steps! I hope he does while I'm on spring break (I'm a teacher)! Thanks again, it is good to hear that others have been through something similar.

Hello I can tell you from experience that antibiotic will help as far as the ear infection (Omnicef is a good one) but will not help it he has a viral eye infection. A normal viral infection can last from 7 to 10 days. My son is almost 3 and right now we are trying to fight what I was told was a virus, and it will go away in 7 to 10 days. Well today is day 35. His started with his eyes, then that rest of his body slowly developed a rash. He has been to the opthamologist, to an allergist, an immunologist, and a dermatologist. Then to a pediatric allergy and immunologist, she was concerned and wanted to do all kinds of blood work. I'm in limbo right now waiting for the bloodwork to come back, but I do feel like I am going to get some answers. So I guess my advice would be to take him to a pediatric opthamologist or pediatric immunologist because a normal virus should be gone by 10 days.

Sincerely, A.

We had this virus go through our family and friends. You need to focus on feeding good things. We add in Vit. C and garlic to fight the virus. Stay away from dairy, cold beverages and sugar which all will increase mucous production. Little kids tend to take a while. It seemed to take my two year old and four year old over two weeks. If we were getting better the next virus visited. There are more than one out there right now. Focus on feeding the body good and strengthening him.

It could be viral, but could also be sinus. My littlest guy had a bad sinus inf. that took over his eyes and ears and it took four different antibiotics til we found one that took care of it. I don't like to give anitibiotics for everything...but in this case it was necessary. I am thinking he was about your sons age at the time. Keep taking him back, though if you think he needs to be seen. Even if it is viral and needs to run it's course, you CAN provide symptom relief!

Talk to the doctor about allergies, my children had them bad enough that they required shots, and strict diets. They had cold symtoms all of the time. The benadryl and shots helped alot. Some viral infections run a long life, ten days is the usual flu span, but secondary bacterial infections can come about with viral ones. Hope this helps.

My Doc told me to wash my daughters eyes, or nose with breast milk. It's the right ph, and has all the good antibodies.
I don't know if that will help you. Myself I've made a calendula tea for a friend to wash her daughters eye with. We use it to wet a wash cloth, and wiped her eye with it. It cleared up nicely, but had only just started to get infected.
Good luck, A. H

My 18 month old had the same problem. He ended up at the doctor twice and was put on Omnicef twice (10 days each) before his fevers, ears, eyes and sinus infection cleared up. He had issues for almost 4 weeks before being completely well.

A.,
My son had an ear infection off and on for 7 months before he had tubes put in.
Right now we just battled an ear infection and both eyes. 10 days later he got the all clear. The next day he came down with a fever again. No other symptoms just a high fever. I asked day care what is going around and they said high fevers with no other symptoms.
Did you get the drops for his eyes? That is the only thing I had that cleared it up.

I wish you luck and hang in there.

I am assuming this is actually a bacterial infection or they would not be treating with antibiotics. Viral infections have to run thier course which can take as long as 2 weeks The eye infection usually will need actual drops to take care of

Although my children are 19 and 17 now, I can remember when my son was 6 months old, he had his first ear infection and continued to have one about every other month until he was 18 months old. The doctors would always tell me that with any infection, bacterial or viral, it usually take about 14 days to shake it. By the end of two weeks, my sones infection would be cleared up. As with any infection, you will run a low grade fever. In my opinion, if the fever or infection doesn't go away by the end of the week or if his fever goes back up before then, I would call your pediatrician or doctor and get him back in, just to be on the safe side. I hope this has helped you somewhat. Good luck and God Bless.

Hi A.,
My son had an ear infection from 4 months to 11 months, when his tubes were put in. Along the way we found out that he is immune to antibiotics like I am and allergic to 2. I would definately say, if its viral. No antibiotics will take care of it, he probably needs eye drops instead to clear out whatever gunk it being produced.... Then after that, keep him on the appropriate amount of vitamins to help his immunity.
If your son turns into a chronic ear infection person, tubes are very helpful. I think my son got a sinus infection just once or twice after having his tubes in and I let those clear up on their own.

Good luck and I hope he feels better soon.

I had viral pinkeye for almost 3 weeks last May. It was awful, my eye was swollen shut for the first week, then just red and oozy and crusty for the other 2. I bet both infections were viral and his resistance is low so he's having a tough time fighting it off. I think the best thing you can do is feed him nutritious foods, make sure he's sleeping lots, and maybe try some acidophilis to get his good bacteria back to normal (all the antibiotics throw it off.)

Are you nursing? Putting a little drop of breastmilk in the corner of the eye always worked for a clugged tear duct turned into an infection for my kids. Also, after all those antibiotics, did he get thrush or diaper rash? If so, get a bottle of Maxiophilus (a powder) for babies and put it on his tongue and it will go away in 2 days. It's great, natural and easy. Don't give him any meds for that. He will need some good bacteria after all those antibiotics or he could run into more problems that won't seem related but are, and the doctors won't make the connection. You have to. You have to take charge of your babies health. I have had NO LUCK with doctors. They are almost always wrong! If you can steer clear of antibiotics, it's so much better for our baby in the long run.

A., if he's battling an eye infection, take him to an ophthalmologist (eye Dr). I highly recommend Greg Biebart at Kalamazoo Ophthalmology. I hope he feels better soon.
