Ear Infection After Being on Antibiotics?

Hi. So here is a little history about whats been going on. my 4 year old had been dealing since birth chronic ENT issues and chronic reflex issues seen by a pediatric Gastrointestinal doctor . He had a bad sinus infection, and was out on 7 day of steroids, and 30 days of antibiotics by his ENT doctor. This is after him already being on antibiotics for 10 days the 1st week of Nov. for same thing. So, yesterday I noticed my sons eyes had lots of eye burgers, I was thinking due to his sinus infection he is fighting. Well today he woke up with one eye completely crusted over. I had to take a warm wash cloth to wipe it clean so he could open. His eye burgers are also green now. I took him to the doc in box, figured would be fasted, in and out and get the prescription eye drops for pink eye and be done.

Well, so we got in fast, and this is where I am confused. The doctor tells me that yes he has bad sinus infection, and that its causing his eyes to do that since he is so contested and that the antibiotics he is on will clear up anything bacterial. When I said will it make his eye crusted over and green eye burgers, she said yes. She said he is on strong antibiotics and if his eyes are bacterial infection the antibiotics will clear it up. She also said he has ear infection in 1 ear. I said, "that concerns me, 10 days ago when he was seen by his ENT doctor his ears were checked and were fine, no infection, and now he has been on round of steroids, and had been on antibiotics for 10 days so far prescribed by his ENT doctor, how does he get ear infection while on antibiotics?" Doctor said its normal for that to happen, that he is on antibiotics, so it will clear it up. That if his eyes look worse, or not better in 2-3 days bring him back in.

Sorry but that makes no since to me. How does he get ear infection while on antibiotics? How is his eyes looking worse each day while on antibiotics if they truly do help it? I have called his ENT doctor to see what he thinks, but have not got a call back. So anyone had this happen? Have you had a kid be on antibiotics and then get ear infection while on them? I think he has pink eye. The eye infection, has anyone had what I have described and it go away with antibiotics? Thanks for any info

What can I do next?

My daughter had pink eye caused by a sinus infection. Her pediatrician prescribed just an antibiotic for the sinus infection. She said she didn't need eye drops because the antibiotic would take care of the pink eye too. It did go away.

Sounds to me like he needs a new antibiotic. I would call the ENT.

Sounds like the bacteria is resistant to the antibiotics he is taking.

Psst, boogers and reflux.

Maybe it's viral. Antibiotics don't work on viruses, just bacteria.

We had problems with constant ear infections with my son, also...

At one point, he was on a 3 week Therapeutic dose of an antibiotic (to get rid of any lingering infection), and was then going to go on a half-dose of antibiotic as a suppressive dose to try to keep from getting more infections...

Well, while he was on the 3 week therapeutic dose, he ended up with a double ear infection!

At that point, we were very tired of the constant ear infections, and called an ENT..... a week later, he had surgery to put in ventilation tubes.... (and... he STILL got ear infections!). Yes, even with the tubes, he got ear infections... (he was just about 14 months old at this point), so the doctor then put him on a nasal spray (something like flonase)...... at that point, the nasal spray really helped..

And yes, he did outgrow the ear infections.... by the time the tubes came out, he had pretty much outgrown the ear infections.... and now, at age 22, probably had maybe 1 or 2 ear infections since the tubes came out.

(Also... one time, he had a pretty severe sinus infection that, as the doctor described it, also drained out through the tear ducts..... so that may be the nasty eye boogers you are seeing.....)

Well I have no experience with "chronic reflex issues" or "eye burgers" so I cannot advise. In fact, I am not even sure what kind of doctor treats such things.

There IS such a thing as too much antibiotics, that much I know. I also know viral infections (and fungus and yeast infections) do not respond to antibiotics, and that antibiotics can very well CAUSE viral/fungus/yeast infections.

call and make an appt with his ENT. he knows your son's history. just so you know, he may be becoming immune to some of the antibiotics, so they may have to switch to stronger ones. my daughter who gets chronic ear and sinus infection at age 9 now gets combined antibiotics because amoxicillin and omnicef do jack for her.

Many things here, and this would be my take.
1) Pink eye can be bacterial or viral. If it is pink eye that is caused by a virus, the antibiotic will not help and you would have to wait for it to clear. If it is pink eye caused by a bacteria, then the antibiotic he is on should clear it.
2) However, it is completely possible for ear infections and sinus infections to leak over and cause eyes to crust shut. And the infection from the sinuses can spread to the eye. So it might not be pink eye, it's completely possible that it's from the sinus or ear infection.
3) But I agree with you that if he has been on antibiotics for 10 days, this (the sinuses, eyes, and ear) should be getting better, not worse. I'm not sure what antibiotic he's on, but it sounds to me like the bacteria might be resistant to it, and he needs something stronger. So definitely get in touch with your ENT.

Ugh. Poor kid. Time to follow up with the ENT. Keep calling until you get a callback or an answer. As a lifelong sufferer from sinus issues myself, I can tell you that yes, it is possible to have an ear infection develop while being treated with antibiotics for a sinus infection, or just after. Sometimes a different antibiotic is what is needed, or a longer time on the same one. I have had infections that were not cleared up by a normal 10 day prescription.

Also, do what you can to keep the mucus flowing - steam, mucinex, saline rinses, whatever your kid will tolerate. The infection tends to linger when the mucus turns to glue and doesn't move, creating a stable, warm, moist environment for bacterial growth.

Good luck.

Sometimes antibiotics only do part of the job. My DH used to get reoccurring sinus infections. A z-pack and he was on his way...for six weeks. Round and round. In the end, he needed a scan (to see where the infection was), steroids and a different, long-term antibiotic to knock it out. The antibiotic your son had may not have been the right one for that infection. My DD has an ear infection and is on drops and an antibiotic we have not tried before.

You say this has been going on since birth? Has he been tested for allergies and food sensitivities? My one son had ear infections also since birth, was on so many antibiotics constantly, tubes numerous times, ended up having yeast syndrome b/c of all the meds-we put him on yeast free, sugar free diet for a year (not easy) but surprise, no infections and immune system stronger-also gave probiotics daily. Not saying this is your son's issue but after so many meds, yeast can become an issue making the problem worse. You need to do your research. I was able to find a holistic md. My other son's problems were caused by dairy, soy and gluten-some things you may want to look in to. Enterolab will do testing for food sensitivities.

Antibiotics will help to clear up bacterial issues but they can't do a thing about viral issues.
Also, some strains of bacteria are becoming more resistant to antibiotics so if one doesn't work they'll try another.
It's very common.
You just have to be patient and persistent with these things.

Simple, the antibiotic has to be one that the bacteria is sensitive to or it does not work. Different bugs require different antibiotics.
