My 1 yr-old has very very dry hair. I've tried a lot of different oils and greases but nothing seems to work. I've also tried olive oil and nothing...her hair is still dry. I don't know what to do now. Can anyone help me? :[

What can I do next?

There are many great deep conditioners on the market, Wen (mail order) Bigelow products (very good), but all these are topical. Have you tried a humidifier (if the air in your home is dry) as well as treating your daughter's condition from the inside out? Such as adding more fluids particularly oils to her diet will help. Obviously, her age will dictate what you feed her. Check with your physician. Perhaps adding a teaspoon of olive, flax or another healthy oil to her diet daily will help. I know it helped my daughter and myself in treating our dry skin and hair. Again, check with your physician and use common sense. Add it slowly and gradually to her diet as her bowel movements will also be affected and will indicate an adequate dose for her. Happily, if she has any constipation issues, this will help that as well, but again, common sense, you don't want to create another problem while fixing one. Honestly, adding a little oil (mixed in with her food) to her diet should really make a difference in her hair and her overall health. Actually, the one my daughter and I and my whole family take now (I take capsules) is castor oil. Sounds awful and old fashioned, but it really, really helps many things, not just dryness. It is a great, I mean great source of vitamin D which many of us lack due to limited sun exposure and lots of healthy sun screen. Try it yourself. All the Best, K.

Hi A.,

My son used to have very dry hair as a baby also. I would only wash his hair once a week to allow his natural oils to be present. I was told by my pediatrician to use Paul Mitchell baby shampoo, no more tears. I also tried some adult type extra moisturizing shampoos and conditioners. They worked beautifully. Today, at 14, my son still has dry hair. We have kept to the same regimen . His hair looks and feels better. Good luck.

Hi A.,
My 4yo daughter had dry, brittle hair and I found a product on-line called Moroccan Oil. It's a bit pricey, but you don't need to use alot so a bottle should last you a long long time. I found a 3oz bottle for around $27. The normal rate is $40 a bottle so if you do a search on-line you'll find a better price. Anyway, after using this for a few weeks, her hair is shiny, very soft and is starting to grow, which is what she wants. Plus it smells great. If you don't want to spend the money, have you tried shampoos with conditioners in them? Or leave in sprays? They make those for childrens hair. Another thing you might want to try is to not wash her hair so often. It could be drying it out. I hope you find something that works for her :) Good luck!

I had a friend whose daughter had patches of hair that looked like it was caught in a waffle iron. It always looked like she needed to brush it. Finally I asked about it and it was actually some kind of diagnosable condition. I forget the name right now. But there was nothing they could do! The daughter did start to grow out of it. I knew them when the little girl was 5 and we moved away when she was 10 and it was going away.

O. other thought. With the furnaces running in the winter, sometimes a humidifier in the room at night can help with dry hair--and skin!

the weather can make the hair dry. if your child is biracial they will have dry hair especially this time of the year. make sure to go the store and to the section for african american people. If this is not the case then go to the local beauty supply store and see if they have any suggestions.
