Hi! Have you tried Hair Mayonnaise? You can buy it at beauty supply shops. It's easy to use, and should help a lot.
Best wishes!
Hey ladies,
I have a 4 yr old daughter with very thick, dry hair. I have tried everything. I do not want to put any chemicals in her hair, she's too young for that. Can anyone suggest anything????
Hey guys, thanks so much for your advice. I got a lot of great tips. I have ordered honey milk and hair balm from Carol's daughter. I did use a flat iron on her hair with perfect for perms cream. I called my stylist and that is what she suggested. It really worked. He hair looks relaxed. I am not sure if I want to keep putting heat on her hair.

Try putting mayonaise on her hair and let sit for a few minutes like a conditioner and then shampoo. It really softens the hair.
Go get you a good silky shampoo and conditioner. I like Matrix in an orange bottle called sleek look. Don't wash the conditioner out totally but don't leave so much in there that it looks oily. That same line of products offers a spray bottle of something (I forgot what it is called) that you can spray on it after dry and then you style it. You can spray that on there and then take a straightening iron to it and straighten it. It will look very chique and smooth and silky.
Good luck.
You didn't mention if your daughter is of African American descent. When I was having problems with my daughter's hair, I was talking with her friend's mother who is African American. She told me that African American's do not have oil glands in their scalp and that I needed to use oil products designed for their hair type. You also need to have that child's hair thinned as well as layered. It has made a world of difference for my daughter. She has commented on how much better her hair feels just doing that. Also the lady that said you were already putting chemicals on her hair using commerical products is correct. Checking the labels, nearly all shampoo has formaldahyde. The Melalucca or Arbonne hair products do not have chemicals in them. A hot oil treatment on amonthly basis would help and using the correct shampoo and conditioners for her hair type and not overwashing it does help.
Some children just have naturally coarse hair, but may I recommend using Pantene leave in conditioner? I use it on my daughters' hair and they're always very pleased with the results of soft hair!
Good luck!
Have you tried the Garnier Fructis line of shampoos? http://www.garnierusa.com/_en/_us/fructis_renovation/fruc...
I have 3 daughters, 2 of whom have incredibly thick hair like me. This shampoo is WONDERFUL. They have silky, shiny, manageable hair that doesn't tangle like it use to & doesn't frizz, it's really amazing. I love their spray hair gel. I have natural curly hair on top of the thickness & this has made it so much easier to work with.
Check it out!
Funny my mother is just like that really coarse thick dry hair,I found a website www.lush.com that does fresh made cosmetic products got her a solid shampoo bar which is really weird to use but you only use a little at a time and Coolaulin which is a coconut conditioner after a while hair much softer, our hairdresser even noticed it was easier to work with it's a little costly but it is worth every cent if it works.
Hey N., my advice would be to go on line to www.carolsdaughter.com and checkout their products. I've been intending to order for my daughter, but just have not found the time ( or the resources) to do so as of yet. I have heard lots of good things about her stuff so I'm sure you can't go wrong if you at least try it out and see. One of the most popular items is called "hair milk" and you'll be able to just look through the products, read what they are good for, and I found that reaidng customer comments is a big help. And I'm gonna say this and I don't want you to shoot me, but have you ever thought about sisterlocks for her? A lot of people might say that is crazy to put them in while she is so young, but I'm telling you it's a wonderful system. I've had mine for a year now and my daughter will be getting hers soon. I would hate for her to start the chemical process so soon. Anyway, you can investigate it and make your own decision, just wanted to throw that one out there. I hope this will help you, take care.
There is a hair oil product that is in a green bottle - something with Olive Oil that I use for my daughter and it works great. I also use the Pantene Relaxed and Natural Shampoo and conditioner and it helps to make my daughter's hair more manageable when I comb it. It smells good too. She's almost 3. Hope this helps!
hi N.. i have been a hairdresser for the last 7 years, so here are some tips for your daughters hair. hope it helps. try putting baby lotion or lusters pink oil lotion in her hair after you wash it. it will help soften the hair, set her curls and tame frizzies. also make sure to get her hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks to keep the dead ends at bay. also, don't wash her hair any more than necessary...once or twice a week should be plenty in the winter and maybe a little more often in the summer if she swims or sweats a lot. use a moisurizing shampoo and a good thick conditioner. if you still use tear free i think johnson's makes a moisturizing formula or loreal kids has one too. once a week you can do a deep treatment on her hair...get a container of cholesterol condtioner. wash her hair and then slather that one her hair real thick and wrap it up with a warm towel and let her run around with it on her hair for 20-30 minutes. then rinse as usual.
I would have to suggest the Arbonne Intelligence Shampoo and Tea Tree Oil conditioner. All products that Arbonne offers are pure, safe and beneficial and with the nanospheres technology you get great results. You won't have to worry about chemicals with this company.
You can contact me if you are interested. Hope this helps.

I have course hair myself and don't use chemicals. I am not sure how course your daughter's hair is but would you consider using some leave in conditioners. When you wash her hair buy a conditioner that you leave on her hair for like 5 minutes then rinse out it will help with the detangling and not let her hair get so dry. Don't use too many styling products because it's just going to get dryer and the best thing is to blow dry her hair if you can that way her hair will get oily naturally. No need to wash her hair everyday either. I wash mine about every 3 days. I have a 8 year old step daugther with course hair and all I do is the conditioners when I wash it and the leave in conditioner. My other step daugher who is 14, her hair is too course so we just relax it but use a children's mild relaxer and it helps alot we just have to blow dry her hair we can't let it air dry.
N.,
I would suggest that you try Codliver Oil.I used to give it to my granddaughter and it made her lifeless hair so soft and shiney.
You can buy at Walmart.

Hi! I have to admit, my first thought was to get her thyroid tested, as well. Does she also have dry skin?
Also, what is her diet like? Is she eating a lot of pre-processed foods without much fiber? Healthy omega oils that you get from fiber, salmon, flax, nuts, olive oil, avocado, etc. do help your skin, hair and nails in general.
I don't know if this counts as chemicals, but in my family full of women with thick, coarse dry hair we've discovered a little bit of mayonnaise (just a little) softens hair.
I would suggest that you keep it moisturized 2 times daily and braid it down in big braids. It will help with having to comb it daily and make it more manageable.
Try Rusk Smoother Conditioner. It is a leave in conditioner. I have 2 friends with curly, curly hair and it is the only thing that will maintain it.
My family has very fine hair and we all use it to keep tangles to minimum.
N.,
weather you know it or not, you're probably using chemicals on your daughters hair now. Harsh detergents and formaldehyde.
My nephew has hair like that. Although he has almost blonde hair, the texture is that of African American hair. he uses Melaleuca's Envia ultra hydrating shampoo. It has really softened the texure and smoothed it out. His mother (my sister)has extremely dry hair, although hers is very thin and fine. She a gardender in california and is badly sun damaged. The Envia has made her hair very soft and silky. With Melaleuca, it's simply a matter of switching "stores" buying the stuff you already buy, but saving money, time, and getting products that are safe for your home and family! If you call me, I can get you more info.

Check out www.originalsprout.com. They make all-natural hair and bath products for babies and children. I use the shampoo and leave-in conditioner for my daughter and it works great to keep the frizzies at bay. I also use their Styling Balm for extra hold when putting pony tails or barrettes in her hair. It doesn't leave her hair crunchy or sticky and gives it a healthy shine. Good luck!

You're right about those chemicals, according to my beautician a girl should never have a perm before her period.
My mane and three of my daughters manes are pretty thick and coarse as well, but good conditioning helps to soothe our savage beasts. Saturate her hair with a good conditioner, put on a plastic cap and allow it to permeate her hair and scalp; the longer the better. Whatworks even better is if you have a salon style dryer that she can sit under with the bag on and conditioner in. I've been doing it now for years, and a task that I used to dread is much easier now. Let me know how that works for you!
I was just on this website. www.missjessies.com. i think the Baby butter creme may work well for your daughter. Hope it works out for you.
What about conditioner or a creme rinse?
HI Notonya, As a child I had what my mother used to call cotton candy hair. She used to slather my hair with Mayonaise and let it sit for 20-30 minutes and then give me a bath and wash my hair with sjampoo and conditioner. She said that always worked. hope this helps.
I'm probably not qualified to answer this question since I've never dealt personally with course hair, but I'll give it a shot. I worked last year with a woman with very course hair, and she used tree oil in her hair. It's all natural, so it's worth a shot and couldn't hurt.
My daughter had the same issue when she was about that age. I also did not want to put a perm in her hair that young. So, I decided to take her to a hair salon and have them do it the old fashioned way. They washed and pressed her hair. Then, I would have them braid it very pretty for me. That definitely helped for a while. However, that next year, I had to perm it because I could not keep up all the salon appointments. But she then developed a scalp fungus because her hair was just too thick and her scalp could not breathe. We could not put hair grease in her hair because since her scalp could not breathe, it would not wash out fully and then it would irrate her scalp in a fungus. It was sooo hard for us. To get rid of the fungus, I had to wash her scalp with vinegar which would burn her head and then rinse thoroughly. I did that for about two months until her scalp did not burn anymore and was strong again. Then, I had it permed and her hair has grown wonderfully ever since! Believe it or not, her hair is STILL thick even with the perm. That is how thick her hair is. I told her it is a blessing and pain in the butt all at the same time.....because I have thin hair. I hope this helped even a little. Good luck.
Please don't put chemicals in the little girl's hair. My hair is 100% natural. I cut the perm out in September. When I was transitioning I used this website and it helped me trememdously www.nappturality.com. There are great women on this website with every kind of hair type you can imagine kinky, coily, curly and dry. Right now I use products from www.karensbodybeautiful.com. She's based in NY and she's getting ready to have a sale for nappturality members. Her products are great for moisture and dryness and they smell wonderful, I use here hair milk. I've heard that the hair creame and hair butter are wonderful also, but my hair doesn't like shea butter. I also use Qhemet.com for moisture. She is great also. I use her alma and olive oil heavy cream. Also, there is a Natural hair group in raleigh and many of those ladies might be able to answer your questions also http://naturalhair.meetup.com/32/. If you have anymore questions just let me know.
My daughter's hair is like mine very very thick... and most things seem to dry it out - I think some of it is due to the local water. We have found that Aussie Moist shampoo & conditioner (in the purple bottle) seems to help quite a bit. you may also try rinsing it with spring water or distilled water to see if that helps. oh yeah Aussie also makes a 3 minute miracle conditioner for deep conditioning although the old family way was to lather your hair with mayonaise and leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing. that helps it look shiney and healthy as well. I've also noticed that since we put small amounts of layering in my daughter hair we have had less dryness and tangling which has translated to less tears. Hope some of this helps. good luck
my daughter also has somewhat coarse hair and you have to put some kind of oil in her hair. you might have to play around until you find the right oil for her hair to make it soft and manageable. something i do also when i wash her hair (once a week since it is so dry and i want to retain the moisture) i oil her hair and braid it while its still wet. if you braid it tight enough they will last a few days. its easier to get a brush through and its less painful to her. also a good moisturizing conditioner is good for her after you wash her hair. if you feel like you need to oil her hair throughout the week, just take the braids down and redo it again. me and my daughter have made sunday our beauty day. we do our nails and hair and other girly stuff and she has a ball! if you keep oiling her hair it will grow to be very long and pretty.
My friend keeps her daughter's hair natural too and she uses the hair care products from Carol's Daughter. It is a company based out of New York City. She orders it through their website. She tells me that she has had great success. I used to live in NY and have been to the store, the first store in Brooklyn, and it is legitimate.
My daughter has my hair, which is as you described, thick, unruly, and very dry/coarse. I have been using adult conditioner on her hair since she was about three.... and I generally pour a minimal amount of water on her head when rinsing, thus basically leaving the conditioner in. I also don't wash her hair daily, which helps. I only wash it when it looks greasy, which happens in about 5-6 days. I use more product in mine, so I wash it every three days or so. Washing more often just dries out our scalps even more... If your daughter has African or ethnic heritage, have you tried a gentle oil? I don't know as much about this, but I'm told it helps.
I strongly encourage avoiding the chemicals at an early age. The hair is very thick at this time and needs to be "tamed" which includes brushing and oils. The "Pink Lustre" line is good for adding the oil balance. If you find that the thickness becomes unmanageable, with your schedule, braids are always appealing and the young ladies love them. Find a good stylist that can perform the regular treatments and keep the hair braided. With the braiding, there are alot of style options and it helps control the thickness; actually it will help the hair to grow since you are removing the harsh processing (curling, heat, pulling, tugging) from the hair treatment process.
Ironically, my beautician was sharing with me last night a woman that had refrained for one year (1) from using chemicals. Her hair treatment consists of washing and a heavy cholesterol treatment and blow drying. This straightens the hair. And then she flat irons the hair. A Good stylist will help and also support your decision to refrain from the use of chemicals.
"Mane & Tail" Shampoo and conditioners are wonderful products. You can buy them at most retail outlets, such as Walmart, Kmart, etc.
These shampoos were originally made for horses but I think someone eventually tried them out for themselves and it worked and by word of mouth, they became popular for humans too.
I have used these products and trust me, they are wonderful. They have an ingredient in them, ( I forget what it's called) that relaxes the hair.
Try it, You'll love it.
Good luck,
R.
Try the Motions shampoo and conditioner for kids, and the Optimum Oil Therapy. These products are very good for increasing moisture, and helps the hair feel soft and silky. Hey! I should do a commercial for them huh! Hope this helps!

Mom of a daughter with thick hair too!
Try Extra Virgin Olive oil. Place some in your palms and rub through her dry hair. Place a shower cap or saran wrap around it. Let set for about 15 minutes and then rinse it out. Don't blow dry it, let it dry naturally.
HI N.: I think the easiest thing to do if your daughters hair is very coarse and you dont want to use chemicals is to have it braided on a regular basis. If you dont know how maybe someone in your family can braid it about every 2-3 weeks. At the end of that time you can wash it and leave it loose (pnytails or whatever for about a week and then rebraid.)

ok, may sound weird, but... if you mix 3 eggs,1 tablespoon of Olive Oil, and 1 Teaspoon apple cider vinegar. Apply to hair and massage into scalp. Cover with shower cap and wait 30 minutes. Then shampoo as normal. It will help with dry hair. This is a deep treatment. I usually use a vinegar rinse after shampooing my hair instead of conditioner. This has helped with my really dry thick hair in the winter. Only need about a tablespoon of vingar for regular rinse.
Hope this helps.
This is a good site too:http://health.howstuffworks.com/home-remedies-for-dry-hai...
Put some olive oil in her hair and cover up with a shower cap while she is bathing. Do it a couple of times a week. That should help... :)
Take my advise. Get her thyroid tested. This is one of the classical symptoms. Make sure you get the # of the TSH level and do your own research on the issue, especially if the # is over 5, but if it's over 3 as well. Depending on her TSH # you might consider getting the book, "Living Well with Hypothyroidism" Get the Matrix Biolage for dry hair, you can get it at most beauty salons.
Let me know what happened
Burt's Bees makes a great all natural avocado hair treatment that you can leave on overnight and get great soft hair. It even comes with a nice shower cap to cover the hair all night. Or pure olive oil works also either before shampooing or overnight too. Also make sure that you are using a natural shampoo with no chemicals in it. A. T.
Try Pure Coconut Oil or Olive Oil. If that doesn't work, try Pink Oil Moisturizer.
