Very Strong Urine Odor in BF 7 Week Old Baby?

Just wondering if anyone has had or currently has a baby with very strong urine smell. My daughter is exclusively breastfed and I eat a fairly healthy diet with the exception of a couple sodas and some cookies! I know I don't drink nearly enough water in my day but that should have nothing to do with the constitution of my breastmilk but just supply issues...any ideas on what can cause such a strong smell in my little one? Anything she's lacking or myself?

What can I do next?

I just want to make a note too on your water intake...I was religious about my water drinking with my first and with the second I just did not make the time to drink and found myself drinking about 20 oz a day and ended up with two very painful plugged ducts! NOT FUN!! Drink your water. Also soda is dehydrating...use it as a treat for yourself not a means of quenching thirst.

Just my 2 cents ! <grin>

I doubt that it is your diet. I had a horrible diet when I was breastfeeding and my daughter never had this problem. My doctor told me that Urinary Tract infections are very common in girls.

Usually urine smells for one of two reasons: 1.) There is an infection of the urinary tract, bladder or kidneys. But that usually presents with other symptoms of crying and fever. The second reason could be concentration. If the babe isn't drinking enough fluids, the concentration of urine is stronger. Make sure that he's drinking enough breast milk formula and has access or you offer water throughout your day.

You also answered your own question when admitting that " I know I don't drink nearly enough water in my day" -- everything that comes out of the body of a breastfed baby is directly related to what YOU are , or are not, consuming! You need to drink MUCH MORE liquid, and that's not just water: milk is very important for calcium for both you and your baby, and orange juice is still also very healthy for you and the baby with the vitamin c and folic acid.

You might notice if there are any certain times when this happens - is it always just in the morning after a long night? After a certain food?

You have to increase your liquid intake! It could be affecting your milk and the babies urine. It doesn't hurt to call the doctor's office either and ask a simple question. You certainly don't want this to go on if it could be harmful to your daughter. Baby urine can be strong at times though. This is only my opinion. I hope it helps.

Call your doctor's office and ask the nurse. Little babies are still fragile, so a 5-minute call is definitely worth it! I know it's tough with an infant and a 2-yr old.
