My last trip to wine country, we stayed north of Sonoma in Healdsburg, CA at a bed and breakfast. It was great. We spent the days touring wineries in the Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Sonoma. We stayed at the Hayden Street Inn, I recommend it.

And drive to the coast and have dinner in Jenner. The cliffs against the ocean are gorgeous.

We flew in to San Francisco, and drove up, spent 2 days touring wineries, then back to SF to come home.

Of course, this is only a good trip if you like wine, especially red wines. Lots of great zinfandels and pinot noirs. Also the Korbel estate, which is pretty commercial but a champagne tasting was fun.

I live in wine country and work at a winery. It's beautiful here! I've lived here my whole life and I love it. Diane C is right. There are great places to see and some of the best restaurants in the country here. Just to add to her comments, Sonoma Valley and Napa Valley are actually rather different in how they feel. Sonoma is much more relaxed and laid back than Napa, IMO.

If you decide to come to wine country you are welcome to PM me and I can make some suggestions if you're interested.

I've never been to Cape Cod so I can't comment on that.

Try Maine (Kennebunkport, etc) or Rhode Island (Newport is awesome) rather than Cape Cod.

I live in Somona county too, and think its a tremendous place to vacation. Before we move here my husband and I spent weekends in Calistoga, darling town with hot springs and mud baths, at the north end of Napa county. Generally you can't go wih here: city, beach, wine, shopping... Lovely

We spent a week in Cape Cod last summer with extended family, and honestly we were sort of disappointed, but I think we picked a lame area on the bay side so the water was very tame. The pricier areas are farther out on the hook and will feel more beachy and charming.
