I would highly recommend the Grapeline tours in Temecula. Depending on where you are in Orange County, it's not that far. They offer a shuttle tour to about 4 or 5 wineries. The tour is about 10:30-4:30. The tour guides are great and the atmosphere is fun! AND, they are reasonably priced. I've taken the tour a few times (romantic weekend with my hubby, girls weekend, and a bachelorette party). I definitely recommend them. If you're in the northern part of LA, look ino the Grapeline tours in Santa Barbara. Same company, but I like the Temecula wineries better.

Oh, and the almond champagne that Holly mentioned is at Wilson Creek! Yummy!

The Temecular wineries (especially the ones on the back-side) are really good. They have the grapeline tours and you can get good prices on limos and they are happy to take you to the back-side (where, I think the wine is better and the wineries are often less crowded) and you can do the tastings on your schedule. Plus the drivers will take you to little wineries that the main tours often don't go giving you a little taste of where the locals go.

There is also a Ventura Wine Trail (although I've never been, some family members have and they enjoyed it): http://www.venturacountywinetrail.com/

Santa Barbara has wine trails with Grapeline tours as well - take the train from LA to Santa Barbara and the Grapeline tour can pick you up at the train station. They can pick you up at several hotels or landmarks within Santa Barbara as well. http://www.sbcountywines.com/

Another fun option would be to take the Coaster Train Wine Tour in San Diego: http://www.lajollawinetours.com/wine-tours/wine-train-tours/

I would definately look into Temecula!!! Wilson Creek in Temecula is the winery with the Almond Champagne. Try their Port and pay the little extra and get it in a chocolate shot glass...YUMMY!!! There also is a winery that that sells the most tasty brandy, and I don't really like Brandy!

Have fun and Happy Birthday to you and your SIL!

There are a few places in OC you could go to - but I am not sure about the transportation aspect. I would recommend you make the drive to Temecula - they have bus tours/limo tours etc. and all of the wineries are in a nice loop. I have been to Napa and Sonoma and I still prefer Temecula because 1) I live in OC and it is much closer (like an hour or so out of OC so we can have a day trip and sleep in our bed that same day), 2) the wineries are closer together so you can see more of them in one trip, 3) MUCH cheaper (look online and in tourist books for deals for tours and one one get one free tastings etc). 4) fabulous variety of wines/ports and finally it is extremely beautiful - if I had to re-do my wedding I would have it at a Temecula winery.

If you go - try the almond Champagne (forget which winery had it...but was very good); also they have a lot of restaurants and small town shopping/antiques so you could have a great day there or a great weekend.

Happy Birthday - hope you have fun!

Definitely check out Temecula or Los Olivos near Santa Barbara. They are both pretty close to LA and have many wineries. Unfortunately I don't know about tours but if you check their Tourism websites you should be able to find something. Have fun!
