UPDATE On Post Regarding Kids Using Clorox Wipes to Clean Their Desks at School

I wanted to post an update to my question about whether you all think its safe for kids to use Clorox Disinfecting wipes to clean their desks (without washing their hands afterwards).

I did end up emailing the principal. The reason I went to the principal rather than just my older son's teacher was because I have seen this in multiple classrooms (children using clorox wipes themselves). I wasn't rude or aggressive in my emails or conversations with her - I simply said I had a concern. She contacted me immediately and was very understanding. She said they absolutely do not condone letting children handle the wipes. She went to each classroom personally to make sure teachers understood that kids are not to handle these wipes. She has been very accommodating and understanding of my concerns. I do love our neighborhood school! I am glad I spoke up and did what I felt was right for my children...even if some of you felt that I was being "that mom".

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

FYI I don't have a problem with teachers using them! I use them in my home. I just do not want my children using them to clean and then not even washing their hands afterwards...which is what was happening. I love my kids teachers! Children are much more sensitive to chemicals than adults. Thanks for all responses!

Good for you! :-)

Too bad if anyone thinks you're being "that mom".

Everyone should stick to their integrity!

I don't think you are "that mom"... I completely agree. Our kids should not be exposed to those types of chemicals!

Good for you!

No one wants to be "that mom" but sometimes we have to be. If keeping our kids safe mean we're "that mom" then so be it. Glad the principal took action.

I didn't see your original post, but I am teacher myself and use them in the classroom; however do not allow the children to use them. I also have baby wipes and that is what I allow the kids to use. (To wipe off their desks, tables, hands and faces, etc.) I had a parent complain one year that I was using Clorox wipes! Seriously?? I do it to cut down on germs which in the long run kept her child healthier. Sometimes I feel like teachers can never win...but that is another whole topic of discussion...

Hey--if you never speak up & seek change, then you can't complain about the status quo, right?!

Eh, while I think there was no problem with the kids using them, I'm glad you stuck up for what you felt was right with your kids.

None of us wear your shoes or know 100% of the situation. When it comes down to it, if we don't protect our babies, who will?

Glad to hear it! I use them myself, but if you have a concern, you shouldn't be afraid to reach out and get the problem solved. Glad it was received so well!

good for you! i had a similar experience - one of the slides in my son's daycare looked dangerous. i posted on here about whether i should say anything and while several were supportive, most told me to stop being a helicopter parent. i went ahead and talked to the director anyway and she told me that she herself had nightmares about that slide and was having it moved. sometimes you just have to go with your gut and be THAT mom knowing that our children need us to protect them. good for you!!

Yaaay! I am so glad the principal understood where you were coming from and took appropriate action. I'm guessing that the teachers either didn't read the packages or felt that it would be easier to have the kids do it. Now they have no excuse since the principal has addressed it. Kudos to you!

Excellent! As someone who also follows what chemicals we're all exposed to daily, I'm also in the "that mom" camp. Good for you and sounds like you received the outcome that you were hoping for. Kudos!

Although I don't have a problem with Clorox wipes, I do believe that we should all speak up when we have a concern. I'm glad you handled it so well, and that you got the results you desired.

Way to go, Mom! You did a great job looking after your children and handled the situation effectively. Chemicals are a huge concern in our entire environment, they're not something to be taken lightly. No bleach allowed in this household! :)
