My sons love loud ties (and socks). They are very much in style now. My 9 year old son regularly wears a bow tie to school and my 17 year old wore a paisley ascot to a sweet 16 party. It's hipster-nerd-ugly chic.
Mamas & Papas-
Had occassion to go to the menswear dept in Macy's and Penny's this weekend. There are some seriously god awful ugly ties out there. While I understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, strikes me as unconscionable for designers, production people, buyers, marketers, distributors to keep ugly ties on the market. What gives? Are there really buyers for all of these? Do men of a certain age get stuck with a certain type of tie that was fashionable back in the day, and need the same time and time again? Like women with an 80s hair cut, or who got stuck in a shade of lipstick that is very dated.
Hubs has his own biases, he won't wear a striped tie, because for him, it is a school boy tie. Not something an adult would wear. The ties that DS chose for hubs though, purple and orange paisely, and pink and purple paisley were more garish/ more tech start up/ marketing than his conservative lawyerly look.
Thanks for your two cents.

Unconscionable? Dramatic much? If you are talking about those bow ties and other throw backs, guess what, you are old, they are actually very much in style.
My son and his friends sport three piece suits, bow ties in some awful patterns, and a hat that was probably stolen from a retirement home. That is the current style. Welcome to middle age.
Well, they must be selling for the company to keep producing them.
Ha! I think the same thing about Jeggings, but apparently someone's buying them!
I like brightly patterned, long, narrow ties, for men or for women.
we LOOOOVE tie shopping, especially at Macy's.
Paisley, plaid and stripes galore in this house. My husband looks really good in pink and purples.
As someone who finds 75% of current fashion trends (esp shoes and handbags) utterly stupid, I think ties are low on my offender list.
I've never seen my husband wear a tie. And that includes our wedding. That said, my MIL is a fine seamstress and took the time to make a vest of silk ties for my husband, which he did wear at our wedding. It looked fantastic and he's received a lot of compliments on it. And I have to say, some of the young men wearing vintage ties and suits look wonderful.
You said it - eye of the beholder. My SS likes solid ties or paisley. My DH likes unique patterned ties (so maybe jet fighters on a solid background). And I have to wonder how many ties are created by men just this side of color blind.
What my DH wants to know is where does my mother find this continuous supply of ugly holiday ties?
My husband is in sales and about 6x per month wears a tie. He isn't picky but I tend to get more conservative old-school ties at Goodwill for $2 so I don't overpay for ones he won't like OR spill on them and stain them and waste money. lol That's my 2 cents.
LOL! I'm just glad that my husband's company has been business casual for many years now. He rarely wears ties!
Ties .. I've never really given it much thought. My husband is like me - boring and plain. I think we're more functional if that makes sense - whatever works and we don't have to think about.
His tend to have some design on them that goes with the shirt. He doesn't wear often. I don't think they stand out flashy, but they aren't terribly boring either.
My kids on the other hand wear anything crazy - they had to wear to hockey games, etc. and go for wild. I think it's pretty cute - very traditional clothing yet zany ties to show their personality. I'm all for it.
My DH doesn't wear ties for work so I just remember the complete horror of him breaking out a horrible brown wrinkled to all hell tie from the 80s the first formal event we ever attended together haha. It's certainly to each their own, I try my best to be at least marginally fashionable but I'm sure I fail miserably.
I could say the same about women's shoes and jewelery. But I'm pretty much a plain jane.
hahahaha! I've always thought the exact same thing about ties! They're all so crazy! No idea who the heck is out there picking the fabric/print out for them. Oh, I know - maybe it's a huge group of women laughing their butts off for making mens main accessory item look like it came from the circus!!!! LOL
