UGH!!! Disgusting Pinworms

My 3 year old (2 at the time)son had pinworms in the Fall, the dr prescribed something that got rid of them (I think). Well, I just changed his diaper (pull up) & he has them again!!! I am going to call the dr first thing in the morning for another script. Does anyone have any advise or suggestions on how to prevent this from happening again? Is this common? We are really good about hand washing but he does bite his nails so that probably doesn't help. I know it's supposed to be harmless but it really creeps me out!

What can I do next?

Pinworms can spread from one person to another. The worms do not come from pets, only people. Kids can get pinworms no matter how often they take a bath or play in the mud.
They become infected by unknowingly ingesting microscopic eggs through the mouth. Eggs can be on many surfaces, including:

* bed linens
* towels
* clothing (especially underwear and pajamas)
* toilets
* bathroom fixtures
* food
* drinking glasses
* eating utensils
* toys
* kitchen counters
* desks or lunch tables at school
* sandboxes

Here are a few ways you can help to prevent pinworm infections in your family:

* Remind your child to wash his or her hands after using the toilet, after playing outside, and before eating.
* Make sure your child showers or bathes every day & changes underwear daily.
* Keep your child's fingernails short & clean.
* Tell your child not to scratch around his or her bottom or bite his or her nails.
* Wash your child's pajamas every few days.

By taking a short course of medication like Pin-X and by following preventative tips, your child will be rid of the worms in no time.

My BFF's son (7 or 8 at the time) had them 3 times before they finally got them totally under control. What helped her were the following:

1. Make sure that cats do not use any of the areas that he plays in (sand box, etc.) as a bathroom.

2. Vacuum his bedroom & wash his bedding and bed clothes in HOT water every morning (or as soon as you can if you work). If he gets in bed with you, do the same in your room and for your bed and clothes.

3. Wash Wash Wash his hands. And make sure that when he is outside he's not accidently putting them near/in his mouth, nose, or eyes. Even just an unconcious finger to the mouth seems to make a difference.

Good Luck!

I had them when I was a kid but I think you can get them from food that isn't cooked completely. make sure you cook meats thoroughly and keep different food groups separate. Could be food from other places too. Good luck!

My daughter has had them. The medicine that the doctor recommended is not a prescription but OTC. Called Reese's Pinworm Medicine. I found it at Walgreen's. Just one dose worked for her.
Good luck.
