OK, I know this is kind of funny, but my 4 y.o boy is scratching his bottom very frequently. His bottom is clean, I know because I am still wiping his bottom after a BM. There are no red spots or anything. He just says "Mama, my bo-bo keeps itching" Any ideas??

What can I do next?

My mama's timeless remedy for anything that itches or stinks--ARM & HAMMER BAKING SODA!! Sprinkle some in his bath water and put a little mound of it on the side of the tub. Dip his towel in it and gently scrub the bo-bo with it. Also, if he's using bubble bath--stop using it for a while. He could be sensitive to soaps too. Good luck!

Pinworms. Most active & itchy at night. Go to a drug store like cvs or walgreens and ask the pharmacist where is the over-the-counter product for pinworms. One easy dose (no side effects) and he's fixed. And very grateful.

I had a friend whose son complained that his bottom itched all the time. She took him to the doctor and they discovered that he had pinworms. It's probably not this but something to be aware of. I had never heard of this before. Pinworms are extremely common. It is estimated that there are more than 40 million cases in the United States each year. Although anyone can catch pinworms, they are most common in children aged 5-14 years. The most common symptom of pinworms is an itchy rectal area. Although pinworm infections can be annoying, they do not cause any serious health problems and are usually not dangerous. If you suspect pinworms but do not see them, you can use the "cellophane tape test." It is best done early in the morning before any bathing or washing.
Wrap a piece of cellophane tape around a tongue depressor, sticky side out, and press it to the skin around the anus to collect any eggs. Take the tape to your doctor, who will put it under a microscope to look for pinworm eggs. Your doctor may ask you to use 3-5 pieces of tape to increase the likelihood of seeing the eggs. You could call your doctor and ask about that, if it is they can treat it with medicine.

PINWORMS!!!! Actually everyone in the family needs the med though and you need to wash your bedding and bedclothes in HOT water daily for a week. If you are pregnant or have a smaller child in the house, call the doctor for an Rx med that will work.

Good Luck!!! My BFF's son had them several times. It was only after not allowing him to play in his sandbox (where cats are likely to go to the bathroom and thus where you get them) and firm lessons on handwashing that he was able to stay pinworm free.

Good Luck!

It could possibly be parasites. Some parasites live in the intestinal area and come down to the rectum area to hatch eggs. Gross but true and actually is quite common in young children. On Oprah, Dr. Oz said that if there is a concern with an itchy rear end, that you can put a piece of scotch tape (seriously!!!) over the anal opening over night. In the morning you will find the eggs if that is what is causing the problem. It is worth a try if stopping bubble bath, etc. does not help. Good luck!

Some kids just have this issue I think. My hubby said that when he was little his parents were always yelling at him for two reasons...because he was talking too loud (issues with constant ear infec/fluid in his ears) and he was always itching his bottom. He does not have this issue now, but a friend of my hubby's that is a doc mentioned in conversation one time that a lot of kids that have that issue when young end up with hemorrhoids and things like that later on...a correlation, not neccesarily causal, but I thought that was interesting.

I know its gross and sounds grosser, but there is a possibility of worms. People get them too. Check with your pediatrician.

It does sound a lot like pinworms and it is quite common in young children. My daughter has had them twice. We took her to the doctor and although she looked at her bottom she could not definitely diagnose without actually seeing the pinworms. She told me to wait until my daughter was asleep and to take a flashlight and look at her bottom (anal opening) and sure enough that night I saw tiny little white squiggly things. Bless her heart, no wonder she was itching so much. Then the doctor phoned in a prescription. The medicine worked and I also had to wash all her bed linen and vaccuum really good. After a couple of days my bottom was itching really bad and so I had to take the medicine, too.

The nurse told me the eggs get under their fingernails and end up in their intestines when they put there fingers in their mouth. The eggs hatch in the intestine and the pinworms come out of the anal area at night whent he child is sleeping.

Like I said, my daughter has been through this twice and now I am very careful to make sure she washes her hands frequently and I use a fingernail brush when she's been playing outside.

Go to the doctor. Have him checked for pin worms. If he goes to day care then its a big possibility. It's real easy to take care of also, so don't freak out.

It does sound alot like pinworms. If your son is a heavy sleeper, you can sometimes take a peek during the night at his bottom. Use a flashlight, and look for teeny tiny worm like/egg things. It's kind of disgusting, but very common!
