In TX, how do you add a 2nd person to your car title (no loan involved)?
In TX, how would you get a copy of a title to your property (a trailer home) if you've lost it?

Background: My mom and her boyfriend are in their 70's have been living together for 4 years. They live in S. Texas in the winter (in his trailer in a senior citizen's trailer park, Hidalgo Co), and my mom's IA house in the summer. They're now in IA and he's had a coupe minor strokes and medical issues in the past 2 months. He wants to add her to the car title, and they may eventually need to sell the trailer home (or put her name on it too) but he has no idea where the title to it would be. He just renewed the TX registration on the car. If he dies, I think things may be tied up in probate for quite a while (he has $$$ and lots of estranged adult kids with drug & alcohol issues who may try to challenge the will), so isn't it a good idea to get her name put on things? They haven't married because he's Catholic and his alcoholic ex-wife is still alive, so he believes that he should not remarry.

to add to the tittle, they have to go to the secretary of state's office. and they can do that there.

for the property title, contact the register of deeds office with the county he lives in They have copies of all property titles there. They can get you a copy of the title. It will probably cost a few dollars. Then he will have to go to a lawyer to do a change to add her onto it.

We had to add my name to all the properties and it was quite easy to do. When you speak to the lawyer, you may also want to look into the laws. If he passes away within so much time of making the changes you mom may still not get the items, when contested. The family can say she coerced him into doing it.

Michelle,
This is one case where it may well be worth it to hire an attorney who can make sure that there are no loopholes that would keep your mother from having what her boyfriend wants her to have. Perhaps there is a way to keep the "kids" from wreaking havok if they choose to do so.

First of all, they need a legal last will & testament leaving the items to your mom (or whomever he chooses). He can specifically leave OUT anyone he chooses as well in his will. Is the trailer an actual mobile home? Or a travel trailer? If it is a mobile or manufactured home, they need to contact the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA). If the home gas a Texas seal or label number on it, you can call them or go to their web sight and see whose name the home is in. If they shiw no record of it, you can apply for a lost title by submitting a new SOL (statement if ownership and location - aka title). If it is a travel trailer you will need to check with the dept of motor vehicles to apply for a new title. The mist important thing he needs is that WILL! Have it drawn up properly by an attorney and it won't matter if her names are on the car or trailer if he bequeaths them to her in his will. Good luck!

car and property titles are done at the County Tax Office. Google vehicle registration and put in your zip code. You can file for lost title, but you may have to get a bond. Message me if you end up needing a bond - I'll tell you where to go in Plano.

In the case of making a will, be sure he leaves these wayward kids at least $1 to insure they can't contest the will.
