I am going to give birth to my 3rd child via c section and am considering a tubal ligation. Someone I know who had it done after her 4th c section told me that it is a very painful recovery. My doctor said that she doesn't think she's heard that before. Has anyone had it done? Am I to expect more pain than with a regular c section? Just trying to make my final decision...
A.,
I had my a tubal ligation after my last c-section 7 months ago and I had no pain other than the normal pain involved with a c-section. I needed no more recovery time or anything like that.........you honestly don't even feel like you had one!!!

I don't remember it as being a painful recovery, in fact, it is such a minor thing and they'll do it at the time of the C section, I assume. No big deal.

I can't speak to the C-section. However, I had a tubal after having my third child and came through with flying colors. You have to remember not everyone has the same experience. I would think that if you haven't had any problems with recovery in the past you should have no difficult this time. I say go for it.

Let me know what you find out because I am also pregnant with our 3rd child and am planning on the tubal after the c-section. I had not heard that the recovery time is any longer than with the c-section, but that might be a deciding factor. Thanks

Hi
I had it done after/during my schedule c-section. I had some sharp pains once in a while for a couple weeks after - when I would get into the car (maybe from bending?). Anyway, I would do it again. The peace of mind from having permanent birth control is worth it.
I also just had an endometrial ablation (4 years after tubal) - wish I would have done that sooner!!!!! No more periods!!

Hi A.,
I've had 3 c-sections and had tubal ligation with the 3rd. The only difference I noticed with the tubal ligation was a minor burning sensation internally. I really wouldn't say it was more painful - just a bit different. Not at all sorry I did it. Good luck!

I had a tubal ligation with my c-section (2nd one) in December. I would not say its "very" painful, more different. I had a rough recovery after my first section and was in a lot of pain for months. Recovery after this one was better, even with the tubal. There was definitely more soreness where they did the pulling and work for the tubal, which my OB said was normal. Kind of felt like I was punched to the sides just above my incision. Then I would get twinges there for a while. But it wasn't horrible.

I had my tubes tied during my 3rd c-section and the pain was not worse than the other 2. And like others have said -it's worth avoiding another surgery to get it done at that time.
But you can expect HEAVY periods to follow. Not sure why but they're extremely heavy after the ligation.
Congrats on your soon to be 3rd child!

I had it done when I was 32 (I am now 45) and it was a very simple procedure. I went back to work in 2 days and had very little pain. I did have lifting restrictions but that was normal protocol. I imagine after 13 years the procedure and recovery must be improved. It was the best thing I ever did. I did not however have the two procedures done at the same time. I had 2 c-sections at ages 20 and 23. I have 2 children ages 25 and 22 and a 4 year old granddaughter. Good luck!

I had a tubal ligation after my second c-section. I thought the recovery was actually a little easier than after the first c-section. I didn't notice anything different during the recovery period. My monthly cycle has changed a bit since then, but nothing terrible and I don't know if the changes are due to the tubal ligation or just a natural part of getting older.

My best friend had this done after her 4th child and she had them all vaginally and the pain was not that bad she said. Her SIL had it done after her 4th child and those were sections and she also said it is not that bad and really she was in no more pain then she would of been anyhow. Good luck and I hope this helps ease your mind some.
I had a tubal ligation with my 3rd child/c-section and there was no pain whatsoever (other than the regular c-section pain). It was a scheduled c-section (I had one with each child) and my recovery with the 3rd one was the easiest, least painful of all of them. Maybe your friend had some other recovery issues going on that she thought was from the tubal. Good luck & congratulations!

I just had a tubal done last week, and it was very painful! I have given birth vaginally 3 times, but I think that it is comparable to a C section, where doing anything that involves your stomach muscles hurts. Of course, the more movement and things you do will help to make it more painful. I was surprise at how much it hurt, since it was tiny little incisions, but it hurt on the 2 sides of stomach (where tubes were cut, I guess) It has been 7 days since I had it done, and I am almost totally recovered. Sometimes getting up to standing hurts, and I can't sit in any low chairs. Also, the pain builds up for a few days, you hurt more after coming home then in the hospital.
If you are already getting a C-section, not sure how much the tubal will add to the pain you will already have.. Good Luck!

hello
I had 3 c sections myself. The recoveries were not that great. Painful and long! But I made it through. My husband and I decided that we would stop at 3 children. I didn't want a 4th c section and I have epilepsy also. I had to come off my seizure meds during the first 6 months of pregnancy and could't drive. It would be near impossible to do that again with 3 children, school etc. (long story), but anyway. I did the tubal ligation. My dr. told me it wouldn't hurt anymore than just the c section. She was right. I didn't feel any different than I did with the others. FOr us, it was the right decision. I am happy with 3 kids and satisfied. It's busy darnit!!! ha ha. Think long and hard, because it's a big decision. THe one aspect I struggled with was, GOD forbid something happened to one of my children, like they passed away or a terrible accident, would I want to try for one more? I know that sounds morbid, but we thought off all aspects. With my other health condition, it just wasn't possible for us. It is convenient because then your husband doesn;'t have to do any procedures etc. Best of luck to you-- I suggest if you have any doubt at all, don't do it. In the end it is nice to not have to worry about birth control;... Real nice!
take care and good luck.

I had my 3rd baby by c section in August. My other two were vaginal, so that was my only c section experience. I told my husband that if I ended up having a c section, I would have my tubes tied, otherwise he was having a vesectomy. I don't think the c section was any more painful since I had my tubes done as well, but I also didn't have anything to compare it to. The doctor did tell me that I might have more cramping than normal.

Hi, A..
I had my tubal ligation after my third c-section three years ago. I can't say that the recovery was any more painful than the pain I felt after my other two c-sections. As a matter of fact, I recovered quicker than I did with my other two c-sections, but maybe that's because I had four kids to take care of! Best wishes to you!

I had my tubes tied 2 years after I had my second child and immediately after waking from the anesthisia I was in a very large amount of pain and the pain meds they were giving me were not working. I pretty much had to just take what would dull it and make it managable because nothing made it go completely away. By the second day I was still pretty sore and tender, but no where near in as much pain as the first day. I just had to take Tylenol 3 and watch it for a day or two.
Now.....on the other hand, this is just my story. I have known others that have woken from the surgery and asked when they were going to start because they did not have any pain at all. Every individual reacts differently to everything, but I know even with the pain I experienced, it was well worth it. I had come to the point in my life where both me and my husband were 110% certain we did not want any more children and after being on the depo shot for 2 years I realized it was pretty ridiculous to go every 3 months for birth control when I could just get my tubes tied and be done with it.

I really had no problem at all with my Tubal Ligation. A day or two recovery and I was fine - it was not exceptionally painful at all.
I think your friend - after having 4 C-sections - was having abdominal pain because of the C-section, not because of the tubal.
I would do it as I've now been 6 years since the tubal and it's been GREAT!!! I wish I had done it sooner.

( a little heavier after the my last 2 c-section ) Good luck with your 3rd child and your decision on the tubal . It was the right decision for my family

I had it done after my 3rd c-section and it was the same amount of pain. You're already gonna be in pain and have a sore abdominal area anyway from the c-section. My only complaint was that I had severe cramping (that I wasnt used to) and heavier periods for like the first year afterwards.

I had a c section when I delivered twins and also had my tubes tied at the same time. I had a very easy recovery. I didn't know what to expect, as it was my first c section, but I had no issues and was glad I had my tubes tied at the same time. My doctor said it's no different from just a c section recovery. I'd say go for it!

I had two c-sections but did not get my tubal ligation done till last year when I was having problems with my cycle and I decided I was done having children. I do wish I would have done it with my c-section because they where already in there and it wouldn't have been an extra time under anesthesia which I have a horrible time with. Recovery wasn't that bad a few days of soreness but overall worth it. Not nearly as bad as c-section pain!

Hi A.,
I had a tubal done with my last c-section in October. I had twins and then a single so my last c-section I planned the tubal ligation. I had absolutely no pain with the tubal ligation. Have you had a c-section before? If you have then you will not feel any different then that one most likely. If you haven't had a c-section, sure you will feel tender and you will have to recooperate but I don't think the tubal added anything to that. They deliver the baby and when everything is taken care of with that they go ahead and do the tubal ligation. It took all of maybe 10 minutes?? Anyway I thought since I was having a c-section what a perfect time to have it done. I was very happy with it and I know a good friend of mind had it done the same way and she didn't have any problems. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Absolutely! Get it done. As long as they are in there and you no longer want any more kids, it is the best thing that we did. There was a little more pain, which I totally didn't expect. I don't know why, but I didn't expect any more pain. It was weird. I could actually feel a little bit of pain where my tubes were and where they cut for the c-section but it was not unmanageable and it didn't cause a longer recovery. They healed at the same time and in fact, I think the tubal healed quicker because the skin wasn't being stretched every time I breathed. :)
Hope this helps. Good luck.

If you are getting your ligation done at the same time you are doing the C-Sec, I don't even thing you will feel anything. I had mine done ligation done and yes there was some pain but nothing some pain killers could not handle and it just felt like cramps. It's all about tolerance. Maybe your friend does not have a lot of tolerance for pain and therefore felt like is was really painful. I wish I could've done my with my c-sec but the hosp., I delivered at would not do ligations because of religious reasons. If you are getting that option to do it w/the c-sec GO FOR IT!

My friend just got hers done during a section after the delivery of her third.
I am not sure that it was worse or more painful, but she did say that there were some pains she did not remember from her previous section. The Doctor told her that was related to the ligation.
While the "normal" procedure is minimally invasive, your best bet since you are already there is to have it done and avoid another surgery.
With little ones at home, the recovery from the section is not going to be easy but I don't think the addition of the ligation will make it unbearable.
Good Luck to you!

I haven't had it myself, but 2 people I know have, and neither had a C-section. Neither had any problems, and were up & about the next day when they were released from the hospital. (One had 3 kids, one had 4.)
The one with 4 has since gone to Mexico to get a reversal done, and has not had any luck in getting pregnant again. (She REALLY does not need another kid!)
So make sure you are SURE before you do it.

I had a c-section with my 3rd and 4th children. With my 4th I had a tubal ligation and the recovery was not that bad. The only different pain was a little cramping or pulling on my sides. I guess you could compare it to the type of cramps you would get after running. I was expecting much worse than it was. So I guess my advice is expect horrible and you will be be pleasantly suprised when it isn't as bad as you were anticipating. Good Luck with you family!

My friends scared me saying it was painful but they've never had a c section so they wouldn't know how painful that can be.
I say get it done, it's no biggie.
Hope this helps,

I had a tubal ligation after my second son 22 years ago. The only pain I experienced was the result of the air that they need to put into your abdominal cavity to work; in fact, the same thing happendd after my gallbladder surgery two years ago. It is painful but lasts only a couple of days. I didn't know what it was the first time. Good luck.
