Hi Moms,

When I get a cold, my ears feel SO clogged! I try everything. Chewing gum, yawning, hot shower, etc... It makes me really dizzy and lethargic... Anyone have any suggestions to pop my ears without busting my eardrums?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hold your nose, close your mouth and blow pressure out your nose. Be careful you could blow your eardrums if you do it too hard.

What will help is getting a good decongestant. Sudafed (not the PE). In our state you have to ask the pharmacist for it, but you don't need a prescription - just your I.D.

Also take an anti-inflammatory like Advil or Motrin. Not Tylenol. Take about 3 of them every 4-6 hours.

Sleep with a humidifier and prop your head up to help your eustachian tubes drain.

I have bad allergies and a deviated septum. I battle congestions and clogged stuff all the time. This is what works best for me.

Try rinsing your sinuses out with warm saline using a neti pot, then drink some warm tea or soup broth.
You can also put a heating pad on your ears.
Drink plenty of fluids, use a humidifier, don't try to dry the cold out (no decongestants) - it thickens the mucus which will clog you ears up - use Mucinex instead.
A steam inhaler can help, too.
I tried this thing last time I got a cold - it was wonderful!

Melissa J. gave good suggestions. The Sudafed (behind the counter, you have to ask the pharmacist) is the one you want. When you have a cold things can get fluid filled or inflamed, and the inside of the ear is tiny enough that just a LITTLE inflammation makes a big difference.

Have you tried to pull down on your earlobe while opening your mouth wide slowly? sometimes this works for me. i remember having the worst ear ache when i was little and my gma wouldnt take me to the dr and had me lay on a heating pad. it worked, i never went the dr and it went away. but that was for an ear ache not clogged ears. The last time i had clogged ears i plugged my nose and popped them that way. not good i was driving and i got all hot and felt like i was gonna pass out. excuse the lack of capitals, i am quite lazy tonight.

This is usually caused by a sinus infection. Drink a pot of chamomile tea. I prefer one tea bag of chamomile one bag of mint mixed. Anyway chamomile tea help the body remove toxins, in other words it makes you pee and sweat. After about 2-3 days of drinking the tea, the sinus infection will start to break up and you will be able to blow it out as you blow your nose.

It is not a good idea to hold your nose and close your mouth and blow, it can rupture your sinuses and cause an infection in your spinal column.

Are you also congested?

If so, consider a nasal decongestent (not an antihistamine). Be sure you're getting enough water. That will help them drain.

Also, try this stretch:

Gently tip your head like you're trying to touch your ear to your shoulder. Don't move your shoulders, only your head. Now, turn your head like you're going to LOOK at that shoulder too. Hold and stretch. Switch and do the other side. This will stretch the eustachian tubes from your ears to your throat and hopefully help relieve the pressure. Being well hydrated will help even more to get them to drain...so drink some water!
